A SIMPLE ONE WOULD DO

She is exhausted I know. Yet, she still manages to plaster a smile on her angelic face. It is a smile
that reaches every depth of her soul. Her eyes though tell a different story. I see through hers the love of
what she's doing. This has been her passion, her calling ever since. But it seems there is something
missing.
Yes, my mother is a teacher. She lives and loves to teach. I know everyone is adjusting now in the
new normal in education as remote classes have started and so is my mom. She is no exemption. While
others are using social media as platform to express their difficulties in coping, my mother remains
focused on what she intends to deliver - prepare the modules for her learners.
Many have been full of their own conflicts that they are forgetting to appreciate the efforts of others.
No one has ever wanted this pandemic to happen and these teachers to let parents carry their crosses. If
only things are normal, they would teach their children face-to-face, without most parents to worry about
making their children learn by themselves. I know they would prefer to teach in person these learners
instead.
The weight on the shoulders of our teachers has been doubled. They may also feel bad about the
situation but this is the least they could do for the time being.
A lone tear escapes my eye as realizations are beginning to hit me. We hear nothing, even though
they are having a hard time adjusting to this new normal and even before the pandemic when all they did
is teach. They work with their passion fuelling them to keep going.
Another pellet of tear wells down my cheek. That is perhaps for parents who seem helpless
to teach their children more than what they could afford to give - their support and guidance. On
the other hand, I could have felt pity for myself, too, whose mom I need the most in these odd
times is a teacher whose time is devoted mostly to her learners but who never runs out of time to
still guide and help me.
If there's one thing that I have come to terms with, it is the very idea that we are all victims of
the pandemic. We are enemy of no one. There is no argument of whoever endures or suffers
more. We are of equal footing.
My mother, your mothers who are all teachers this pandemic has made them become and all
teachers who pledged to educate and change lives deserve respect, admiration and gratitude.
There is no point for disagreement, intolerance, and aggression.
As for me, I couldn't be any prouder to call her my Mama who is both a mother and a
teacher.
As soon as she enters my vision, I hug every inch of her. I mutter something that I've been
holding on, "You did great, Ma."
Love, respect and admiration should be expressed. May it be in words or simple gestures.
My mom's soulful eyes have met mine. I know there is still something missing that she alone can
identify and solve. But I believe I have a lot to be grateful for. I have decided to start with a thank
you. And you should, too. A simple one would do.

If you ask a student which of her properties she cannot live without, the
answer would be clear – the cellphone. But if there is one thing that has no
place in our schools today, the answer would be the same – the cellphone.

Cellphone: Silent Thief
Teachers have been complaining about students’ lack of attention toward their studies.
They said that students are distracted from their lessons. Instead of working on their lessons,
they would text their time away…
Parents have also reported that at home, their children are “burning the lines” chatting
and texting. Once their wards are into it, they cannot be budged to do household chores.
Cellphones are contributing to the degradation of family values.
The deteriorating achievement results would be a mute evidence of how the cellphone
has taken away quality from education.
The next school policy should be to disallow cellphones in schools. It
should also provide guidelines to parents. After all, the parents themselves are
complaining about their children’s performance. As one education community,
there is no responsibility greater than making our children learn. One step
toward fulfilling that responsibility is banning cellphones in our schools.

HOW TO WRITE A SPORTS STORY
In writing for the sports headline, use the
appropriate sports lingo. It should be in
active voice and the verb in the present
tense. Don’t forget the total score.

The sports lead is the attention-getter, the news in a nutshell.
The lead contains appropriate sports lingo and other sports
terminologies. Verbs or action words in the lead are in the past
tense if the article is a sports coverage. The classic “Five W’s”
appear in the lead as; (1) Who won? (2) Against whom? (3) By
what score? (4) Where? And (5) When?

After the lead comes the body that composed of the other
elements arranged in descending order or decreasing
importance. If it is a basketball story, report it quarter by quarter;
if a volleyball story, set by set or frame by frame; if a
softball/baseball story, inning by inning; if boxing, round by
round, etc. in narrative form. Follow these with their respective
scores.
With less than 10 seconds left in the clock,

Usually, the conclusion in a sports
story is in a form of quotes from a

TECHNOLOGY
WRITING
TECHNICAL AND ACADEMIC WRITING
Science writing covers:
(1) Science News;
(2) Science Editorial;
(3) Science Feature; and
(4) Science Column Writing.
Science reporting is science writing by a
scientist or by a non-scientist for mass
consumption.
He writes his story in such a way that
the science non-oriented reader may
understand and appreciate it because it
is written in the layman’s language.
Third Man or the
Interpreter
Science Journalism in print media is
writing focused in science and
technology instead of economics,
police, politics, labor, education, and
sports. Of course, there is a
difference in language, too.
The ordinary science news reporter
presents the information using the 5Ws.
The science journalist in the other areas
goes farther. He has to explain basic
concepts of science involved. He has to
contribute to the general scientific activity
if he wants his reader to understand what
he wants to convey.
The science reporter, therefore, should
understand science. He should equip
himself with modern and updated science
books, encyclopedia, and dictionary. If
he masters translating technical jargon
into simple terms understood by the
layman, then he succeeds as a science
reporter.
AVOID JARGON
Jargons are medical, scientific, legal, technical words.
Remember, not everyone knows the meaning of magneto
hydrodynamics, meson, DNA, or hybridization.
If there are no synonyms for jargons, you, as a science
reporter should take effort to explain in plain language what
the terms means. Do not leave your readers puzzled,
otherwise, the news will not mean anything to them.
For example: After the word mycology, you should
explain it as “The study of fungi such as molds, and yeast,”
USE CONCRETE NOUNS
Concrete nouns are better than abstract nouns. They are
definite. Watch out for vague or imprecise words. Crime, for
example is vague. It may range from jaywalking to murder.
WORDS OF CAUTION: Remember, the 12-year-old
level theory no longer holds true. The twelve-year-olds
of today will often surprise you on how much they know.
Never, however, overestimate your reader’s knowledge,
nor underestimate their intelligence. Develop a clear
mental picture who your readers will be. Then ask
yourself, “Will they understand me?”

  • 34. A SIMPLE ONE WOULD DO by Jasmine Therese Altura She is exhausted I know. Yet, she still manages to plaster a smile on her angelic face. It is a smile that reaches every depth of her soul. Her eyes though tell a different story. I see through hers the love of what she's doing. This has been her passion, her calling ever since. But it seems there is something missing. Yes, my mother is a teacher. She lives and loves to teach. I know everyone is adjusting now in the new normal in education as remote classes have started and so is my mom. She is no exemption. While others are using social media as platform to express their difficulties in coping, my mother remains focused on what she intends to deliver - prepare the modules for her learners. Many have been full of their own conflicts that they are forgetting to appreciate the efforts of others. No one has ever wanted this pandemic to happen and these teachers to let parents carry their crosses. If only things are normal, they would teach their children face-to-face, without most parents to worry about making their children learn by themselves. I know they would prefer to teach in person these learners instead. The weight on the shoulders of our teachers has been doubled. They may also feel bad about the situation but this is the least they could do for the time being. A lone tear escapes my eye as realizations are beginning to hit me. We hear nothing, even though they are having a hard time adjusting to this new normal and even before the pandemic when all they did is teach. They work with their passion fuelling them to keep going.

On the other hand, I could have felt pity for myself, too, whose mom I need the most in these odd times is a teacher whose time is devoted mostly to her learners but who never runs out of time to still guide and help me. If there's one thing that I have come to terms with, it is the very idea that we are all victims of the pandemic. We are enemy of no one. There is no argument of whoever endures or suffers more. There is no point for disagreement, intolerance, and aggression. As for me, I couldn't be any prouder to call her my Mama who is both a mother and a teacher. As soon as she enters my vision, I hug every inch of her. I mutter something that I've been holding on, "You did great, Ma." Love, respect and admiration should be expressed. May it be in words or simple gestures. My mom's soulful eyes have met mine. I know there is still something missing that she alone can identify and solve. But I believe I have a lot to be grateful for. I have decided to start with a thank you. And you should, too. A simple one would do.

The deteriorating achievement results would be a mute evidence of how the cellphone has taken away quality from education. The next school policy should be to disallow cellphones in schools. It should also provide guidelines to parents. After all, the parents themselves are complaining about their children’s performance. As one education community, there is no responsibility greater than making our children learn. One step toward fulfilling that responsibility is banning cellphones in our schools.
