Album cover analysis – Chris Brown F.A.M.E

Andrew Goodwin suggests that record companies will demand a lot of
close ups of the main artist in order to sell the product. He also suggests
voyeurism is present in a lot of music videos now. Andrew Goodwin’s
theory of celebrity applies to this album cover as the main focus is on
the main artist. All of the photos are of Chris Brown, which allows the
audience to identify with it. This also means that the established fan
base of Chris Brown may buy the album because they see his image
on the front. The main image that we see of Chris Brown on this album
cover has been edited to make him look flawless and to make him look
more attractive. This will be to attract the attention of the female side
of his fan base to buy the album.

Barry Keith suggests that a music genre allows an audience to identify
to it by there being familiar and recognizable features in the videos.
Barry Keith’s theory applies as he says an audience identifies with a
genre by familiar characteristics. So an audience can recognize a
genre through visual things. This is shown by the snapback cap, jacket
and earrings that are shown; these are all common in R&B music.

The design of the album cover is very colourful and uses a very bright
colour palette. This will attract people’s attention when it is on a shelf in
a shop. It could also suggest what genre it is as R&B generally is very
colourful and bright. It is associated with ‘bling jewellery’ and colourful
clothing. The colours may imply who the target audience for the artist
is; R&B music is typically aimed at teenagers, so a bright, colourful
album will attract their attention which may lead to them buying the
album.

Also the repetitive smaller images of the artist have a look of graffiti art
which may also appeal the fan base of Chris Brown. It is a very modern
and unique way of presenting an image; this may make the album
look more interesting to a potential buyer walking past it in a shop.
Graffiti art is seen as an urban style of art and may be associated with
young people, this link to Chris Brown’s main audience of young
people. If they see he has used this style of work on his album they may
like it and think it is ‘cool’ and therefore buy the album.
