This short Enterprise Architecture vignette, presented at the GOTO Aarhus 2014 conference, outlines the near-universal architecture evolution of a software system from a monolithic application, to a multi-tiered system with monolithic persistence, ultimately to a network of small, simple micro-services. It illustrates a real-world example of layered internal services at Google -- the Google Cloud Datastore -- and describes a simple set of migration practices to get from here to there. It concludes with more advanced topics around vendor-customer service relationships within an enterprise, formal SLA promises by service providers, and charging and cost allocation models.
