12. PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS
• Childhood agreeableness and conscientiousness influenced adult health status mediated
by healthy eating habits and smoking ( Hampson, Goldberg, Vogt and Debaniski, 2007)
– A population based longitudinal study of personality and health spanned over 40 years
from childhood to midlife.
• Constellation of adolescent personality traits (with developmental origins from
childhood) did link to different health risk behaviours at 21 (Capsi et al, 1997) – A study
that followed individuals from infancy till age 21.
• The study also determined that associations between personality and health risk
behaviours show the same personality type in different but related behaviours . For
example, low Conscientiousness and low Agreeableness were uniformly associated with
alcohol , tobacco consumptions and speedy behaviours .
