INTRODUCTION:
Food allergies occur when the immune system identifies the proteins in a particular food as harmful
to the body, subsequently reacting to try to "fight off" the "harmful" proteins (which are in fact
harmless). Garlic allergies are not very common but are especially inconvenient to chefs who have to
handle garlic on a regular basis. Allergic reactions don't occur only when you consume a food
allergen but may also occur when you handle it or even breathe in particles of it.
Some symptoms of a garlic allergy include:
Itching or swelling of the mouth, tongue or lips
Skin reactions (eczema, contact dermatitis hives, swelling and redness of the extremities or
face)
Gastrointestinal symptoms (abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea)
Respiratory symptoms (runny or stuffy nose, coughing, sneezing, wheezing, difficulty
breathing)
Cardiovascular symptoms (drop in blood pressure, lightheadedness, fainting)
If you experience symptoms of anaphylaxis, which include nausea, vomiting, weak or rapid pulse,
difficulty breathing, confusion and loss of consciousness, seek immediate medical attention, as this
can be fatal. Anaphylaxis is a fairly rare reaction to a garlic allergy but has been known to happen. If
you have a severe allergy to garlic you may need to carry epinephrine with you so you can treat
yourself in case you come into contact with garlic at any point. Garlic is usually a trouble-free herb,
providing more benefits than complication, but that's not always the case. Prolonged contact with
garlic may cause irritation to the skin or even lesions. Garlic has very little toxicity, and garlic
allergies are rare occurrences compared with other foods. Even so, it does happen and sometimes
with very serious effects.
Cooked Versus Raw Garlic2
The enzyme in garlic responsible for allergic reactions is also responsible for its healthiest benefits.
The Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University reports that the enzyme produces the
chemical compound allicin, which breaks down into other important compounds, some of which
may be effective for fighting cancer. If you want the benefits of garlic without the risk, crush it, let it
sit for 10 minutes and cook it. By letting it sit for a while, you allow time for the enzyme to produce
allicin. Cooking it eliminates the enzymatic activity and most, if not all, of the risk of an allergic
reaction. What doesn't get eliminated are most of the healthy benefits of garlic.

Case Reports: A young female aged 30years came with past history of Hyperthyroidism for the past
11months. She needed support to have food. On examination she had Hoarse throat, Body pains
Irregular periods .along with this on application of Raw Garlic for pimples turned into Red colored
patches on skin.
Past History: past history of Hyperthyroidism for the past 11months. She needed support to have
food. No past history of weight loss, evening rise of temperature.
Family History: There was no family history of hyperthyroidism, diabetes but her mother has
hypothyroidism

Clubbing, neither jaundice nor lymphadenopathy. But Red colored patches on Skin observed.
No history of trauma, radiation exposure.
All the other systems like respiratory system, cardiovascular systems were normal and abdomen was
soft and no mass felt. All his other parameters were normal.
Investigations: Hormonal Assay shows TSH LEVEL 0.60 Micro/ML which shows abnormal. Skin
prick tests and specific IgE immunoassay with several pollens and foods were performed, as well as
the prick-prick test with young garlic and SDS-PAGE followed by immunoblotting IgE to young
garlic and other Liliaceae species, mustard, sesame, parsley, celery, hazelnut, almond, and pollen of
birch and mugwort.
Conclusion: Garlic is well known to cause contact dermatitis and asthma. However, it is a very rare
cause of skin allergyWe describe IgE-mediated reaction to young garlic in patient sensitized to
pollen and dried fruit.
Take Home Message: Garlic induced anaphylactic reaction is a rare condition how ever be careful
while applying Garlic for pimples for a persons with other co morbid conditions
