Ratio and Proportion
Definition of Ratio: A __________________ between
_____________________ quantities
Example of a ratio and ratio fraction: 2:1 or 2 / 1
Definition of Proportion: A ___________________between
____________________ .
A proportion is an equation stating that two ratios are ________________.
If something is NOT in proportion, it does NOT have the same
________________.
Example of a proportion: 2:1 = 4:2
Non Example of proportion: 2:1 = 4:1
Break down the word Proportion
Pro + Portion
Portion (root word): a part of a whole (So there are two parts of a ratio,
right?)
Word problem Example 1:
I am drawing a bald eagle in flight. Bald eagles are very large and I am not going to fit a life
size bird on my computer paper, right? My goal is to draw my eagle in the same
___________________________. If I want to draw the bird in the same proportion, but
smaller I will need to know the bird’s body size.
What do I do if I know my bird’s average body length (beak to tail) is 28 inches and its
wingspan is 80 inches long? What is the ratio of the body length to the wingspan? If I want it
to fit on my paper, what is the ratio in reduced form?
Set up the ratio of the bird’s body length to bird’s wingspan. _______ : _______
Set up the fraction of the bird’s length to the bird’s wingspan. _________
Now set up a proportion where I already know I want the wingspan length to be 10 inches on
my paper. Use the variable “L” to represent the unknown length of the body length.
Show in Ratio Proportion: life size _____ : _____ = _____ : ____ paper
Show in Fraction Proportion: life size ___________ = ___________ paper
How to solve for an unknown when working with proportion problems.
**Multiply or divide by the same _______________ / ________________ to have an equal
ratio. (Like we did on the equivalent fraction worksheet!)
Solve using fraction: (life size) ___________ = ___________ (paper size)
*We do not use ratios because there can never be a decimal or fraction in a ratio expression
Example 2:
Weight on the moon : weight on earth = 1 : 6 or ⅙
weight on the moon: weight on earth =1 / 6 = 130 / 26.6
your weight on the moon: your weight on earth = ⅙ = _______________
