Scheduled to open early 2011
2. Mission
We strive to support the diverse children and families of Oakland by providing
a safe, nurturing and enriching environment where children can thrive in all
areas of development.
We aim to build strong community partnerships and public support that will
allow us to provide quality early care and educational services for the youngest
members of our society.
3. The Problem: Oakland’s Significant Shortage of
Quality Infant-Toddler Child Care Services
By the year 2015, Oakland will have an estimated total of 11,984
families who have infants and toddlers, yet the city will
only have a total of 2,659 licensed child care slots available.

4. Quality childcare boosts the
economy.
For ever $1 invested society gets $7-
$17 of a return in investment.
Early Investments = Higher
Returns
Economic research shows that the
earlier we make investments, the
greater our return will be.

Resources to
Help
Building Bridges Child Development Center is a charitable & educa8onal 501(c)(3) nonprofit
agency, created to alleviate the high demand working families have for quality early care and
educa8onal services. Simply put, by bringing community resources together we address a
major need of Oakland.
One of the biggest obstacles to star8ng a new early childhood center‐based program is finding
the indoor and outdoor space along with the resources needed to create a state of the art
early care and educa8onal program.
ALer searching for over 2 years BBCDC has been fortunate to partner with Resources for
Community Development and acquire the Fox Courts child care space.

9. Early Care & Educational Philosophy
The Program for Infant Toddler Care (PITC) is an evidenced based
model that revolves around the concept of strong relationships between
an infant-toddler care teacher, the children they serve, and the children's
families.
6 policies anchor PITC’s work:
- Primary care
- Small groups
- Continuity of care
- Individualized care
- Cultural responsiveness
- Inclusion of children with
special health care needs
• Infant Room (Ratio of 1 adult per 3 children)
• Early Preschool/Toddler Room (Ratio of 1 adult per 5 children)

(Oakland, CA)
Early childhood environmental education programs have shown to play a
critical role in shaping their lifelong attitudes, values, and patterns of
behavior towards nature.
12. BBCDC’s Outdoor Early Childhood
Environmental Education Program
The outdoor ecology provides more flexible cues as well as invitations to invent more open-
ended themes and roles for young children. It’s an implicit invitation to young children to
explore and take initiative in their own learning
- Dr. Jane Perry, Berkeley, CA
Children are curious about the natural world even when much of what they experience
is artificial or man-made. Environmental education builds on children’s awareness of
the big forces that shape our existence, the events and basic processes that are not
controlled by human energy.
- Rebecca Tracy, Early Childhood Educator/Advocate
