To Whom It May Concern:
Ramón Aznar Roca is currently on a six month internship with the Groundwater Section in the Geological Survey of
Ireland (GSI), which started at the end of January 2012. Ramón was awarded a Leonardo DaVinci grant to provide
financial assistance with his internship. To date, Ramón has worked on a number of different projects including the
national groundwater vulnerability mapping programme, various source protection projects (specific groundwater
drinking water supplies) as well as working on the maps that are published on the GSI’s website for public information.
Specifically, Ramón has undertaken:
• Presentations:
o Producing and presenting a poster on his MSc research at the International Association of
Hydrogeologists (Irish Branch) Conference (Tullamore, Ireland, 24-25th
April 2012);
• Fieldwork:
o Dye tracer test to assess groundwater flow in karst aquifers, which comprised injecting the dye, taking
spring and stream samples over a number of days and analysing the samples for dye identification both
in the field and later in the laboratory,
o Subsoil permeability and depth-to-bedrock mapping and drilling, including borehole logging;
• Data compilation and checking:
o Depth-to-bedrock data for approximately 20 counties,
o National karst features database;
• Map checking/editing/updating (in ArcGIS) for internal and external client enquiries and for website publication:
o National aquifer map
o Groundwater recharge map
o National subsoil permeability map
o National groundwater vulnerability map
Since meeting and working with Ramón, I have found him to be highly motivated and show a great deal of initiative.
Ramón is methodical and very diligent in his work, as well as being efficient and therefore completing tasks in an
accurate and timely manner. He is very interested in the work and is keen to experience every area of hydrogeology that
we deal with, and is particularly interested in the fieldwork elements.
Ramón is an excellent communicator, and continually engages with all members of the Groundwater Section team in
order to prioritise and complete his tasks and undertake new tasks. Ramón is very easy to get on with and has quickly
become an integrated and valued team member. From my experience, Ramón has the motivation, attitude and ability to
successfully undertake any appropriate post-graduate research and I would have every confidence in recommending him
for such a position.
Yours faithfully,
