1. Top Pet Friendly Colleges
Many students enjoy owning pets, but it can be difficult to find a college that does
not strictly prohibit pet ownership. Fortunately, there are a few colleges that have
adopted a relatively understanding policy regarding animals. This is great for those
who do not want to give up their furry, scaled or feathered companions while
completing their education.
Stephens College
One of the most pet friendly colleges is Stephens College in Colombia, Missouri.
This institution’s Searcy Hall has been given the nickname “Pet Central” as this
housing is reserved for students with pets. Cats, dogs, birds, reptiles, fish and an
array of small mammals are allowed as long as they are healthy and current on any
required vaccinations. Dogs of all sizes are allowed, although they must be at least
a year old and certain breeds are banned for insurance purposes. This college even
has a doggie daycare service.
Washington and Jefferson College
Another institution with specified pet dorms is Washington and Jefferson College,
which is found in Washington, Pennsylvania. “Pet House” residents are able to
bring their cat, dog, fish, turtle, gerbil, small bird, hamster or guinea pig. There are
some breed restrictions and dogs must weigh forty pounds or less as an adult.
Students may have one dog or cat or two smaller animals.
University of Notre Dame
Indiana’s University of Notre Dame is a fish-friendly campus. Students may bring
freshwater non-carnivorous fish. While this includes many different species,
students are limited to a thirty-gallon or smaller tank.
Sweet Briar College
Sweet Briar College in Virginia also has some unique opportunities for animal
lovers. Students may keep fish and turtles in the residence halls. Students who are
part of the riding program and demonstrate adequate horseback riding abilities are
able to bring and house their horse on campus. Those who are part of the program
but do not have a privately-owned horse have access to the school’s horses.
2. Stetson University
Stetson University is found in Florida and allows aquatic animals in ten gallon
tanks throughout the residence halls. Nemec Hall holds this university’s pet-
friendly dorms. Dogs under thirty pounds, cats, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs,
mice and rats are allowed. There is also a dog park for pet owners and their furry
companions to enjoy.
Principia College
In Illinois, Principia College is another great place for pets. All residences allow
caged pets and those that live in aquariums. There are also specified parts of
campus housing that will allow one “uncaged” pet no larger than a medium-sized
dog.
Lehigh University
In Pennsylvania, students at Lehigh University may keep fish in their dorms. Greek
houses are also allowed a cat or dog. Dogs and cats must have updated
vaccinations and wear identification tags.
