Text: Introducing Communication: A
Digital Learning Experience
Matthew Barton & Jonathan Holiman
Kendall Hunt Publishing Company
Course Overview:
Communication is found in all areas of our
lives. Whatever the activity, the ability to
articulate your own thoughts clearly into
constructed messages,and to interpret
others messages, will give you power to
unlock solutions some of life’s greatest
challenges. These thoughts and messages
are sent and received in so many ways and channels; i.e. verbal communication, non-verbal
communication, and through technology. Public speaking is a large part of this class because of the
resources it can provide to you as you become more proficient. This class is designed to help you better
understand the importance of strong communication, recognize aspects of communication in your own
life, help you develop your ability to communicate, speak in front of groups, and of course to light the fire
to your upcoming passion for this field of study! ;)
Essential Learning Outcomes:
1. Students will have opportunities to develop research skills by actively gathering relevant
information, skillfully conceptualizing a speaking situation and expressing these ideas in required
informative and persuasive speeches.
Assessment: Accomplished by completing the speech assignments and through instructor
feedback on students’ informative and persuasive speeches.
Ties to SUU Essential Learning Outcome: Communication
2. Students will have opportunities to develop, organize and express ideas by learning how to locate
and identify credible sources for both informative and persuasive speeches.
Assessment: Accomplished through conceptualizing and synthesizing information into required
speech preparation outlines.
Ties to SUU Essential Learning Outcome: Communication; Critical Thinking
3. Students will have opportunities to develop a stronger knowledge base about basic
communication theories and concepts directly related to relationship development and
maintenance in personal and professional contexts and express this knowledge to the instructor.
Assessment: This objective will be accomplished through completing course readings, email
conversations with the professor and unit reading quizzes and exams.
Ties to SUU Essential Learning Outcome: Communication
4. Students will be able to recognize essential verbal and non-verbal cues in day to day interpersonal
communication.
Assessment: This objective will be accomplished through non-verbal and verbal communication
activities, including a self-analysis Myers-Briggs paper and a Ted Talk analysis.
Ties to SUU Essential Learning Outcome: Critical thinking
Graded Assignments:
1. Coming to class and simply
participating (this includes in
class use of modules and
interactives) will earn you a
weekly 5 points.
2. At the end of each week there
will be an open book quiz
available through your ebook,
which will be due by midnight
on Friday of that week. (10
pts)
3. You will prepare, organize, and deliver an informative speech on literally any aspect you find you
are interested in your life. The speech will need to fulfill with the criteria in the rubric provided.
Through the speech planner you will create an outline, you may use any form of visual aid
(strongly encouraged). You will take both the outline and your visual aid to the speech and
presentation center prior to your speech to practice, get help, and receive a signature on your
printed outline for an additional 10 pts. Come to class with the signed outline, this is NOT your
outline assistant. If absent on day of presentation without prior arrangements or emergency
notification, make-up will not be allowed unless otherwise specified. (110 pts.)
4. You will also prepare, organize, and deliver a persuasive speech, yet again attempting to persuade
your classmates on a topic that you find interesting. The speech will need to fulfill with the
criteria in the rubric provided. You will also prepare an outline (with the help of the online
assistant, they are not the same) to which you will take to the speech and presentation center prior
to your speech to practice, refine, and receive a signature for your additional 10 pts. If absent on
day of presentation without prior arrangements or emergency notification, make-up will not be
allowed unless otherwise specified. (110 pts.)
5. Meyers-Briggs paper. They Meyers-Briggs self-analysis will be explained and given to you,
which is really great btw. Meyers-Briggs is a mother-daughter created assessment that, with
detail, allows for individuals to understand how we communicate differently. Your task will be
to then take that information and write a two page paper, double space APA style format on how
this information can help you better understand yourself and others in communicating with them.
What value does this information provide you in entering a job or working with others on a daily
basis, and any other insightful thoughts and ideas you may have on the subject? This is not a
review of what was said in the presentation, nor is it a summary of your own results. It is to be
reflective on the information and how it is beneficial. This and other papers must be written with
a college level construction and organization, including structure, grammar, and syntax, see rubric
provided. (50 pts.)
6. Ted talk paper. You will have an opportunity to watch a ted talk, to which you will give a short
summary of what you learned and a detailed critical analysis of the speaker’s presentation tactics,
as well as an evaluation of whether you feelthe talk was informative or persuasive and why. This
includes what aspects they used, what worked and what didn’t, and whether the speech was
effective or not and why, amongst other insightful comments. Provide examples throughout to
strengthen arguments. This is not a summary of what was said in the speech, your are a speech
critic, as we are learning in class. Your are to pull out concepts we are talking about and analyze
how well or not well the speaker is using them. 3-5 pages APA style format. (50 pts.)
7. Final Exam. Mid terms and finals in this class are largely already a part of your curriculum in
speeches. This class is designed to revolve around your speeches. Therefore treat them as your
tests. You should spend as much time in preparation of them as you do with studying for a test.
Due to new research, the final has been changed from a typical multiple-choice structure that is
being shown to only help students retain information for short term, to a short answer structure.
Here students will have the option to answer 3 out of five given questions that will require them
to explain in detail some of the concepts learned about in class. It will be worth 100 points each.

Mid terms and finals in this class are largely already a part of your curriculum in speeches. This class is designed to revolve around your speeches. Therefore treat them as your tests. You should spend as much time in preparation of them as you do with studying for a test. Due to new research, the final has been changed from a typical multiple-choice structure that is being shown to only help students retain information for short term, to a short answer structure. Here students will have the option to answer 3 out of five given questions that will require them to explain in detail some of the concepts learned about in class. It will be worth 100 points each.
