THE BEGINNING
Described as a cross between tennis, badminton and
table tennis, pickleball was created in 1965 by a group
of friends in Bainbridge Island, Washington. Eager to
play badminton one afternoon, but unable to find a
shuttlecock, they improvised with table tennis paddles, a
perforated polymer ball, and lowering the net on the
badmintoncourt.
THE SPORT
A low-impact sport that is easy to learn and play at
almost any age, this sport for life is regularly described
as the fastest- growing sport worldwide with reportedly
more than 3 million pickleball players in the USA alone.
IN AUSTRALIA
The introduction of pickleball in Australia in 2017 has
seen pickleball now regularly being played by about
1,500 people. There has been rapid growth of pickleball
as a healthy activity since 2017.
At the behest of PANSW and PAA Inc (later to become
PAQ), who recognised the potential scope and scalability
of pickleball in Australia, the national organisation
Pickleball Australia Association Ltd. was established.
Recognition of pickleball by Sport Australia was a primary
driver for establishment of this company and
development of an effective strategic plan.

The Pickleball Australia Association has
a wonderful chance to drive the growth
of a sport that is still new to most
Australians. Creating a strategic plan,
at this early stage, provides the
structured and orderly approach
required, to enable Pickleball Australia
Association to maximise this rare
development opportunity.
As with all plans, it will be the execution
of this strategy that will determine its
success. A strong start has been made
in identifying and prioritising key
actions and allocating KPI’s against
which to measure our success. The
next step is to allocate responsibilities
and associated deadlines for these
actions, and work with State Members
to ensure effective execution; enabling
successful growth of pickleball and
bringing people together to enjoy a
sport forlife.
There is much to do in a short
period of time. To assist in
achieving all that has been
identified, it is recognised that the
board use this plan to engage
pickleball
participants and, where appropriate, to
solicit their help. A program of
presenting the plan to member
bodies will enable the load to be
shared at the same time as
establishing Pickleball Australia
Association as an effective, efficient
national body to nurture and lead the
growth of pickleball in Australia.
Once actions are underway the
Pickleball Australia Association board
recognises the necessity of regular
reviews and revisions of the plan. As
actions are completed, obstacles
encountered, and new opportunities
identified, evaluation of the strategic
plan will allow for celebration of
successes, analysis of impact, and
adjustment to maintain its usefulness
and currency.
This strategic plan was prepared
in March 2020 by the following
PAA Board members: Graham
Barnes, Nick Cooper, Bob
Mendelsohn, Tony Morgan, Jen
Ramamurthy and James
Sharley.
