EXT. BARREN LAND - DAY
Three men and a bride walk across an unending, barren
landscape. They are following in each others footsteps. The
tiny bride struggles to keep pace with the men as the
treacherous sun beats down upon them.
The leader of the group is a tall, well-built man, dressed
as a priest. He is wearing a dhoti-kurta and has a red tilak
on his forehead. He is also carrying a folded umbrella, used
as a walking stick. He is PANDIT DIWAKAR SHASTRI, 48.
He is followed by a similarly dressed young man, his eldest
son, TRIBHUVAN SHASTRI, 30. They are followed by a slim,
modern looking, VISHNU SHASTRI. The neatly dressed twenty
three year old is Diwaker shastri's youngest son. They all
carry a cloth bag (thaila) on their shoulders.
GOVIND (VO)
Maa ne kaha tha... ki uski shaadi
mein na toh baaraat aayee... aur na
he band baaja baja... yahaan tak ki
dulhan ko doli mein baith kar
sasural janeka sukh bhi nahi
mila...
The tiny, young bride, JAANKI, 19, struggles to keep up with
the men and lags behind. The extremely fair young lady, with
a face of an angel, carries an old trunk on her head.
GOVIND (VO)
... un dino bus adde se humare ghar
tak koi sawari nahi mila karti
thee. Saat kos lamba raasta paidal
he tai karna padta tha. Ab saat kos
kilometer mein kitne hote hain...
pata nahi... lekin such maaniye...
chilchilati dhoop mein yeh safar
bahot takleef dayak hua karta tha.
Woh pyas ke maare chatpatati hui
nanhi si ladki dekh rahe hain...
Poor Jaanki wipes the sweat from her forehead and continues
the long walk. Her lips are parched, her mouth is dry and it
looks like she can faint any moment.
GOVIND (VO)
... woh Jaanki hai... meri maa.
Vishnu looks at the struggling Jaanki and stops. The others
are unaware of the situation and keep awalking ahead. Vishnu
waits for Jaanki to come near him.
Jaanki stops in front of Vishnu and stands there, out of
breath. She speaks with her hands on her hips, balancing the
trunk on her head.

JAANKI
Kya... kya hua? Badi jaldi thak...
thak gaye.
He smiles and removes a water bottle from his thaila.
VISHNU
Very funny. Take this...
He offers the bottle to her.
VISHNU
... thoda paani pee lo.
She puts her trunk down, accepts the bottle with a smile and
drinks, placing her lips on the bottle.
VISHNU
Muh mat lag...
Vishnu's warning falls to Jaanki's deaf ears. She spills as
much she drinks. Vishnu warns her again.
VISHNU
Oh, come on... girao mat... babuji
dekh lenge toh bahut daantenge.
Jaanki stops drinking and speaks with a naughty smile.
JAANKI
Lagta hai khoob jee bhar kar daant
khai hai tumne apne babuji ki. Issi
liye shayad itna ghabra rahe ho.
Mujhe toh daant khaane mein bada
maza ata hai. Badon ki daant mein
apnapan jo jhalakta hai.
VISHNU
Apnapan. Really? Daant mein apnapan
jhalak... oh, forget it. Tum abhi
babuji ke gusse ko jaanti nahi ho
na... iss liye itna muskura rahi
ho. Ek baar jo bigad gaye toh phir
bhagwaan he maalik hai. Babuji
pehle akhade mein pehelwanikiya
karte thay. Unka haath bada bhari
hai...
Vishnu remembers an incident, narrates with a smile.
VISHNU
... ek bar babuji ne Tribhuvan
bhaiya ki jo pitai kee thee...
Vishnu stops talking, looking at Jaanki's worried face. He
speaks with a reassuring smile.

... dekho... ghabrao mat... ok.
Arre, babuji tumhe thodi peetenge.
Woh ladkiyon per haath nahi uthate.
JAANKI
Nahi?
VISHNU
Bilkul nahi.
JAANKI
Pakka?
VISHNU
Ab yeh mat kehna ki tumhe maar
khane mein bhi apnepan ka ehsaas
hota hai.
Jaanki gives him a seriously stern look. He wonders if she
is offended by his comment.
VISHNU
Arre, tum toh... aap toh serious ho
gayi... It was just a joke... you
silly girl.
JAANKI
Kya? Kya kaha?
VISHNU
Kuch nahi.
JAANKI
Kuch nahi kaise? Angrezi mein tumne
mujhe kuch kaha.
VISHNU
Nahi... English toh mere muh se
aise he nikal jaati hai. Ah,
college mein apni debating team ka
captain hoon na... iss liye muh se
anjaane mein English nikal he jaati
hai.
JAANKI
Hmm... anjane mein...
Diwakar Shastri looks back and spots the two lagging far
behind. He stops. Tribhuvan, too, stops near him and looks
at them. Diwakar Shastri offers his umbrella to Tribhuvan.
DIWAKAR SHASTRI
Dhoop bahot tej hai, tribhuvan. Yeh
chhata lo aur apni maa ko de aao.

TRIBHUVAN
Woh meri maa nahi hai...
Tribhuvan takes the umbrella and looks intensely into his
father's eyes.
TRIBHUVAN
... meri maa ko mare bees baras ho
chuke hain. Shayad aap bhool gaye
hain lekin main apni maa ko nahi
bhoola. Woh aurat aap ki nayee
patni jaroor ho sakti hai... lekin
meri maa... kabhi nahi.
Tribhuvan turns around and walks away. Diwakar shastri tries
to call him back but shuts up.
Tribhuvan approaches Jaanki with aggression and stops near
her. He stares into her eyes and throws the umbrella at her
feet.
TRIBHUVAN
Yeh lo chhata... babuji ne apni
nayee naveli patni ke liye bheja
hai.
Tribhuvan speaks to his brother, keeping his raging eyes
glued on his young step mother.
TRIBHUVAN
Shayad unhe yeh dar sata raha hai
ki iss dhoop mein kahin unki
dulhaniya ka rang saawla na pad
jaye.
Vishnu picks up the umbrella. Tribhuvan stares at Jaanki who
keeps staring back at him. She speaks with a smile.
JAANKI
Naraaz kyun hote ho, tribhuvan? Yeh
dhoop itni bhi tez nahi hai jo mera
rang saawla kar sake. Chhata tumhi
rakkho... mujh se zyada shayad
tumhe iski zaroorat hai. Lagta hai
garmi seedhe maathe mein ghus gayi
hai. Kahin para aur badh gaya toh
khopadi chatak he na jaye tumhari.
Lo... pani piyo aur gussa shaant
karo apna.
Jaanki offers the water bottle to Tribhuvan. He snatches the
bottle from her hand and warns her.

TRIBHUVAN
Ek baat kaan khol kar sun lo...
mujhe jyada chapad-chapad karne
wali auratein passand nahi... iss
liye pehli aur aakhri chetavni deta
hoon. Apna tiriya charittar apne
pati ke liye samhaal kar rakho.
Mere saamne jubaan band rakhna
tumhari sehat ke liye achha hoga.
Aur rahi baat paani ki toh main
kisi ka jootha nahi peeta, samjhee.
Tribhuvan pours the water on the ground. He keeps staring at
Jaanki who fearlessly stares back at him. A worried Vishnu
takes a few steps back in order to avoid the splattering
water from the ground.
Tribhuvan throws the empty bottle and walks away. Vishnu
tries to explain his short tempered brother's nature to
Jaanki.
VISHNU
Trihuvan bhaiya ki baat ka bura mat
maan-na. Dimaag ke garam zaroor
hain lekin dil ke bade achche hain.
He has a heart of gold, you see...
ah...
Vishnu picks up the trunk and offers the umbrella to Jaanki.
VISHNU
... I mean... I am sorry for his
rude behaviour... but trust me...
Vishwaas karo... unka dil sach much
sone...
JAANKI
All that glitters is not gold,
Vishnu. A heart of gold is of no
value when combined with a
poisonous mind and a bitter tongue.
You don't have to apologize for
your brother. Apne bhai ke bartaav
ke liye tumhe mujh se maafi maangne
ki zaroorat bilkul nahi hai.
She takes the trunk from the hands of a puzzled Vishnu.
JAANKI
Paani pilaane ke liye shukriya. I
really appreciate that... silly
boy.
Jaanki walks away. Poor Vishnu stands there frozen with his
mouth wide open. He is in shock after listening to a high
quality English from a girl he prejudged to be an

GOVIND (VO)
Sheher ke sab se bade angarezi
college mein padhne wale... aur
apne aap ko aadha angrez samajhne
wale Vishnu bhaiya ka chehra dekh
rahe hain aap... jaise current ka
zabardast jhatka laga ho.
A speechless Vishnu keeps watching Jaanki who places the
trunk on her head and keeps walking.
GOVIND (VO)
Meri maa thee he kuch aisi... apne
guno se woh aksar bade-bade logon
ko bhi issi tarah chaunka diya
kartee thee.
Jaanki stops and turns around and finds Vishnu in a state of
trance.
GOVIND (VO)
Jab tak Vishnu bhaiya hosh mein
aate hain... main aap ko ghar ke
kuch aur anmol ratno se parichit
karwa deta hoon.
Vishnu stands there, still frozen.
GOVIND (VO)
Arre, inki fikar chhodiye...
aaiye... ghar chalte hain.
EXT. DIWAKAR SHASTRI'S HOUSE - EVENING
A group of ladies from the village have gathered just
outside Diwakar shastri's house. A few of them are singing a
wedding song, in chorus. The oldest lady of the village
plays an out of tune dholak.
There are florists and electricians doing last minute
decorations. At a fair distance from the ladies section, few
village men sit on the cots and enjoy some sweets. A couple
of servants carry jugs of water and glasses for the men.
A sad looking young woman stands with her head resting on
the door. She is Tribhuvan's wife, SAVITRI, 27.
GOVIND (VO)
Woh jo darwaze se apna sir tikaye
khadi hain... iss ghar ki badi
bahu... yaani ki Tribhuvan bhaiya
ki patni hain... meri pyari Savitri
bhabi. Iss samay zara pareshaan

hain. Aur woh jo muh mein paan
dabaye... safed saadi mein buzurg
mahila nazar aa rahi hain...
A sixty year old widow, TAI, sits in a group of old ladies.
She chews paan as she stares at Savitri.
GOVIND (VO)
... arre, wohi jo tirchee nigahon
se Savitri bhabi ko baithee ghoor
rahi hain. Inhe sab Tai keh ke
bulate hain. Yahin bagal mein rehti
hain... lekin inke pair apne ghar
mein zara kum he tikte hain.
Doosron ke phate mein taang adane
mein inhe bada maza ata hai. Inhe
toh parliament mein hona chahiye
tha. Maa kaha karti thee ki humare
desh ke netao ne dal badalne ki
kala shayad inhi se seekhi thee.
Tai thee bhi ek number ki
dal-badloo... hawa ka rukh jis
taraf dekhti bus ussi taraf ho
leti. Zara dhyan se dekhiye... Tai
apna paan thoonk kar kuch aisa he
dal-badal karne wali hain.
Tai spits the paan, wipes her mouth with her saree and
taunts Savitri.
TAI
Arri, o, Savitri... apni saas ke
swagat ki tayyari bhi karegi ya
yoon he muh latkaye khadi rahegi.
Savitri stands up in attention and gives a fitting responce
to Tai.
SAVITRI
Saari tayyari ho chuki hai, tai.
Aap kyun bekaar mein fikar kar rahi
hai?
TAI
Lo... bhala main kyun fikar karne
lagi? Arre, muh toh tera utra hua
hai.
Tai speaks to a lady who is sitting next to her but her
intention is to taunt Savitri.
TAI
Haan, theek bhi hai... ab tak toh
devarani-jethani maharaniyon ki

tarah poore ghar per raj kiya karti
thee. Aur ab jawaan saas ke isharon
per naachna jo padega...
bechaariyon ko.
The ladies laugh at the expense of an embarassed Savitri who
looks away and mumbles.
SAVITRI
Pata nahi yeh rupa kahan gayab ho
gayi.
INT. STORE ROOM - EVENING
A neatly dressed woman, wearing expensive gold jewelry,
opens a large cupboard using one of the keys from the bunch
of house keys. This fierce looking lady is, RUPA, 24. She is
the wife of Diwakar shastri's second son who lives in
Mumbai.
Rupa, keeps an eye on the closed door, opens a big jewelry
box. It is empty. She quickly digs into one of the many
sacks which are full of rice. She takes out a lare pouch
from it and opens it. It is full of vintage gold jewelry.
With a wide smile on her face, Rupa transfers the jewelry
into the jewelry box. She repeats the process once more
until the jewelry box is full.
GOVIND (VO)
Yeh jo chupke se apni swargwasi
saas ke khaandani gehne hadap karne
ki koshish kar rahi hain... yeh
rupa bhabi hain. Mohan bhaiya ki
patni. Arre, main toh batana he
bhool gaya... Mohan bhaiya babuji
ke manjhle bete hain... Bambai mein
izzatdar afsar hain... aisa woh
logon se kehte hain... waise kisi
ne Bambai jaa kar dekha nahi ki woh
asal mein ek izzatdaar afsar hain
ya kuch aur. Khair chhodiye... iss
baat ko filhaal suspence he rakhte
hain... aur dekhte hain ki rupa
bhabhi yahaan store room mein iss
gehno se bhare baks ke saath karti
kya hain? Lekin zara samhal ke
dekhiyega... inka gussa bada
khatarnaak hai.
Rupa locks the cupboard and sticks the bunch of keys in her
waist. She picks up the jewelry box, hides it under her
pallu and opens the door. She confirms that no one is out
there then walks out.

EXT. MANGO GARDEN - EVENING
Rupa comes out of the back enterence of the house which
leads to a garden, full of mango trees. She carries the
large jewelry box hidden under her saree.
Rupa looks around to make sure that she is alone. She places
the jewelry box into a freshly dug hole in the ground. She
fills the hole very fast and plants a new mango plant on top
of it.
The house maid, LAALI, sneaks up behind her.
LAALI
Aap ped laga rahi hain, didi? Woh
bhi saanjh dhale.
A defenssive Rupa stands up very fast.
RUPA
Tu yahaan kya kar rahi hai? Kitni
bar kaha hai mujhe peeche se aawaj
mat diya kar?
LAALI
Meri koi galti nahi hai, didi.
Mujhe toh tai ne bheja hai...
babuji bus aate he honge.
RUPA
Theek hai-theek hai... tu chal main
aati hoon.
Laali is a little suspicious as she looks at the freshly
planted tree and walks away. Rupa grabs her arm, pulls her
back and gives her a stern warning.
RUPA
Chugalkhor kahin kee. Yeh jo
badi-badi aankhein hain na... jo
matkaati phirti hai din raat. Inhe
phodne mein mujhe der nahi lagegi,
samajhi.
LAALI
Lekin, didi main toh...
RUPA
Bakwaas band kar... aur khabardar
jo dobara meri jasoosi kari hai
toh.
LAALI
Nahi, didi... bhagwaan kasam...
main jasoosi nahi...

Chup chaap chali ja... dobara iss
bagiya mein najar aayee toh taange
tod doongi teri.
A scared laali walks away very fast. Rupa keeps watching her
go then she looks at the freshly planted tree.
The ladies sangeet is still going strong as Rupa walks out
and joins Savitri. Savitri keeps her eyes on Tai and
whispers something in Rupa's ear. Tai gets a little concious
as Rupa stares at her.
GOVIND (VO)
Yeh woh samay hai jab iss ghar per
iss dewrani-jethani ki jodi ka ek
chhatra raj chala karta tha. Aur
maze ki baat yeh hai ki rupa bhabhi
apni saas se... mera matlab,
sauteli saas... yaani ki meri
maa... Jaanki se... umar mein poore
paanch saal badi hain.
Rupa whispers something in Savitri bhabhi's ear.
GOVIND (VO)
Kya ek anubhavheen saas apne se
umar aur tajurbe mein badi bahuon
se loha le payegi? Iss ghar per
apna raj kayam rakhne ke liye yeh
bahuyein kis hadh tak jaa sakti
hain... aiye dekhte hain.
A twelve year old maid, BUDHIYA, comes running and shouts.
BUDHIYA
Woh aa gaye... dulhan ko le kar aa
gaye. Arre, bhabi... tai... dekho
woh aa gaye.
The ladies get exited, stop singing and get up, in order to
take a better look at the bride. Rupa leaves Savitri behind
and moves ahead with the crowd. Tai comes closer and orders
Savitri
TAI
Khadi-khadi muh kya taak rahi hai?
Jaa... ander se pooja ki thali le
kar aa jaldi se.
INT. DIWAKAR SHASTRI'S HOUSE - EVENING
A dejected Savitri grabs the matches and tries to light a
match in order to light the diyas in the pooja thali. The

strong wind makes her task difficult. She tries a couple of
times but fails. Her eyes are full of tears, she stops
crying as Tai shouts again.
SAVITRI
Aayee...
She wipes her tears and finally suceeds. She grabs the pooja
thali but the diyas get extingushed due to the strong wind.
A dissapointed Savitri looks at the diyas in frustration.
At the doorstep, Tai leads the welcome party of the ladies
as the newly married couple arrives. Suddenly, a strong wind
blows across the land. There is a lot of dust in the air.
People take evasive action, covering their eyes.
Tai is the first one who runs inside the house. The other
ladies follow her, leaving behind the bride and the groom.
Diwakar shields Jaanki by pulling her closer in his strong
arms. She looks at him. He speaks to her with an assuring
smile.
DIWAKAR SHASTRI
Halki si aandhi hai... daro mat...
kuchh he der mein shaant ho jayegi.
An upset Tribhuvan walks under a shed and stands next to
Vishnu. Rupa comes and takes shelter behind them. Every one
has their eyes on the newly wed couple. Jaanki speaks to
Diwakar.
JAANKI
Aap saath hain toh phir yeh aandhi
aur toofaan he kya... main kisi bhi
museebat ka saamna karne ke liye
taiyar hoon.
The storm dies down. Everyone come out from the hidding.
Diwakar looks at Tai.
DIWAKAR SHASTRI
Dekhna tai... iss bar jamkar
barsaat hogi. Phaslein lehra
utthengi...
TAI
Ghar mein lakshmi jo aayi hai,
beta. Tere muh mein ghee shakkar.
Bhagwaan kare ki aisa he ho warna
teen baras ke sookhe ne toh hum
kisaano ki kamar he tod dali hai.

Diwakar shastri and Jaanki touch Tai's feet. She blesses
them.
TAI
Jeete raho... doodho nahao... pooto
phalo.
Tai takes a closer look at Jaanki's face then speaks to
Diwakar.
TAI
Bahu toh ekdum chaand ka tukda hai,
Diwakar. Ab pata chala tune achanak
byah kyun racha liya.
DIWAKAR SHASTRI
Nahin, Tai... sab kuch itni jaldi
ho gaya ki kisi ko khabar karne ka
samay he nahi mila.
TAI
Aye-hai! Aisi bhi kya jaldi thee?
Kya koi...
DIWAKAR SHASTRI
Bataunga, Tai... sab bataunga...
pehle apni rasmein toh poori kar
lo.
Tai looks around then orders little Budhiya.
TAI
Arri, jara dekh kar toh aa. Pata
nahi yeh Savitri kahan reh gayi?
Rupa whispers something in Tribhuvan's ear. He thinks for a
moment and nods. Rupa gives him a cunning smile. Savitri
arrives with the pooja thali at the doorstep and looks at
the young bride.
TAI
Ab khade-khade nihaarti he rahegi
ya aarti bhi utaaregi inki.
SAVITRI
Oh... haan...
Savitri does the ritual of aarti and spots her husband
standing in a corner. Rupa has mysteriously disappeared from
there. Tai takes the pooja thali and orders Savitri.
TAI
Chal... ab jaldi se pair chhoo apni
nayee saas ke.

Savitri is offended by Tai's comment and looks at Jaanki.
Her face showcases the insult she feels in her heart with
mere thought of touching feet of someone younger to her.
TAI
Arre... soch kya rahi hai? Yeh toh
riwaaj hai... aur...
Savitri looks at Tribhuvan who is getting angrier by the
second. Jaanki understands Savitri's plight and responds.
JAANKI
Pair chhune ki kya zaroorat hai?
Waise bhi main umar mein chhoti
hoon inse.
Diwakar shastri admires the frank opinion of his young
bride, with a hint of smile. Tai comes up with her
interpretation of the good old customs.
TAI
Baat umar ki nahi hai, bahurani.
Baat toh pad ki hai, pad ki. Aaj se
iss ghar mein sab se bada pad
tumhara hai. Meri iss baat ko jitni
jaldi gaanth baandh logi... ghar
chalane mein utni he aasani hogi.
Aur phir itne bade ghar, khet,
khalihaan, baag-baagichon ka dhyan
rakhna kisi raj paath chalane se
kum thode he hai. Arre, abhi se
lagaam kas kar nahin rakhogi toh
log sar per chadh kar baith
jayenge, samjhee.
JAANKI
Main toh itna he keh rahi thee...
TAI
Bus... badon se behes nahi kiya
karte.
Tai shifts her attention towards Savitri.
TAI
Arri... tu kya khadi hai? Chal
jaldi se pair chhoo... sare mehmaan
teri wajah se bhookhe baithe
hain... jaldi kar.
An insulted Savitri touches the feet of the newly married
couple and looks at her husband. He clutches his fist in
anger and walks away. Vishnu looks at his brother and runs
behind him.

INT. TRIBHUVAN'S ROOM - NIGHT
Tribhuvan sits on a mat, holding his 'praying beads' and
meditates in his room. We hear the celebratory wedding songs
and dholak sounds which are coming from the other side of
the closed door.
Savitri opens the door and peeps in.
SAVITRI
Arre... aap pooja kar rahe hai?
Bahar pangat baith chuki... aap ka
intejaar ho raha hai.
TRIBHUVAN
Hone de intejar... mujhe bhookh
nahi hai.
SAVITRI
Meri baat toh suniye...
TRIBHUVAN
Keh diya na... bhookh nahi hai.
Savitri comes in, shuts the door.
SAVITRI
Kya kar rahe hain? Dheere boliye.
Tai ne sun liya toh sara ghar sir
pe utha lengi.
TRIBHUVAN
Dekh, Savitri... mere sabar ka
baandh toot chuka hai, samjhi.
Bus... ab aur saha nahi jata. Mere
sir per khoon sawaar hai... tu
jaa... mujhe akela chhod de warna
anarth ho jayega.
SAVITRI
Anarth? Yeh kya keh rahe hain aap?
TRIBHUVAN
Theek keh raha hoon. Yeh ghar, yeh
jameen, khet-khalihaan... in sab
per mera hak hai. Meri maa ke khoon
ka hak hai. Main kisi gair ke khoon
ke saath apna hak nahi baant sakta.
Woh aurat mere pita ka pyar baant
sakti hai... meri maa ka hak nahi.
Kal jab uss aurat ki kokh ka jana
apna hissa maangega tab...
SAVITRI
Bus karo jee... aisi baaton se mera
jee ghabrata hai.

TRIBHUVAN
Jee ko pakka kar, savitri. Abhi toh
khel suru hua hai.
Tribhuvan grabs Savitri by her shoulders and pins her
against the wall. She is scared, as she looks into his
bloodshot, angry eyes.
SAVITRI
Maine aap ka yeh roop kabhi nahi
dekha. Bhagwaan ke liye aap...
Tribhuvan speaks like a man possessed.
TRIBHUVAN
Shaant ho jaun? Haan? Tu chahti hai
na ki main shaant ho jaun. Bol...
jawaab de!
Poor Savitri starts crying but controls her emotions and
speaks.
SAVITRI
Haan. Haan, main chahti hoon ki aap
shaant ho jayein.
TRIBHUVAN
Theek hai... tu jo kahegi main woh
karunga... jo chahegi woh laa ke
doonga... lekin...
Tribhuvan wipes the tears from Savitri's face and speaks.
TRIBHUVAN
... ek kaam kar de mera... bus...
ek ehsaan kar de mujh per, Savitri.
Bol... karegi?
SAVITRI

Tribhuvan grabs her face with both hands, speaks with tears
rolling down his eyes.
TRIBHUVAN
Ek beta de de mujhe. Ek waris. Meri
jameen ka waris de de mujhe,
Savitri.
INT. DIWAKAR SHASTRI'S BEDROOM - NIGHT
Diwakar shastri's bedroom is situated on the terrace of the
house. Jaanki is sitting on the well decorated palang of the
spacious bedroom.

Jaanki is tired and yawns by placing her hand on her mouth.
She looks at the clock which is mounted on the wall. It is
well past twelve o' clock.
Jaanki looks around and finds a copy of 'Bhagwat geeta' on
the table next to the bed. As soon as she picks it up, the
door opens and Rupa peeps in.
RUPA
Arre... abhi soyi nahi? Kiske
intejar mein baithi ho? Babuji ke?
Rupa speaks with a cunning smile, comes in and sits next to
Jaanki. Little Budhiya stands near the door.
RUPA
Woh nahi anewale... bagal ke gaanv
mein haija phaila hai na... woh toh
nikal liye apni toli ke saath.
Huh... suhagrat ho ya koi aur
raat... panditji ko kuch fark nahi
padta. Sant aadmi jo thehre... unhe
toh bus aap ek sanyasi he samjho,
sasu maa.
Jaanki keeps looking at Rupa who is playing with the flowers
on her bed. Her face doesn't reveal the hurt she is feeling
listening to Rupa's delibrate jibes.
RUPA
Aap ke naseeb mein shayad... ek
suhagan ka sukh likha he nahi hai.
Ab toh yeh lambi raatein akele he
katengi. Chalo... bhagwaan ka
shukar hai ki ghar mein teen jawaan
bete pehle he maujood hain. Arre,
vansh chalane ke liye. Aap toh bus
aaram se baitho aur din raat prabhu
ke bhajan gao. Man bhi shaant
rahega... aur... pati ki yaad bhi
nahi satayegi.
Jaanki keeps looking at Rupa's smiling face then starts
laughing. The smile evaporates from Rupa's face and Jaanki
laughs even harder.
RUPA
Aap hans kyun rahi hain, sasu maa?
Tabiyat toh...
JAANKI
Meri tabiyat toh bilkul theek hai,
bahu rani... lekin tumhari baatein
sun kar mujhe mere bachpan ki
saheli yaad aa gayi.

RUPA
Achha?
JAANKI
Haan... usse bhi raat mein pagal
pan ke daure pada karte thay. Aur
woh bilkul tumhari tarah logon ke
kamron mein ghus kar aisi he bina
sir pair ki baatein kiya karti
thee.
Rupa gets more uncomfortable with every word that Jaanki
speaks.
JAANKI
Ek din aisa aya ki woh logon per
kutton ki tarah bhaunkne lagi aur
poori tarah se paagal ho gayi.
Tumhare lakshan bhi kuch-kuch waise
he dikhai padte hain, Rupa. Lekin
ghabrane ki koi baat nahi... aisa
karo... jaa kar kisi achhe doctor
se apna ilaaj karwao. Bhagwaan ne
chaha toh jald he bhali changi ho
jaogi.
Little Budhiya couldn't control her laughter. An insulted
Rupa gets up very fast and shouts at Budhiya.
RUPA
Chup! Jab dekho tab hansti rehti
hai.
JAANKI
Arre, bachchi per kyun naraaz hoti
ho, bahu? Aur tum khadi kyun ho
gayi? Baitho na... kitni maze ki
baatein ho rahi hain. Tum chali
jaogi toh main bilkul akeli reh
jaungi.
RUPA
Nahi... baith toh main jaati...
lekin... unki chitthi aayi hai...
bambai se. Uff! Subah se fursat he
nahi mili... padhne ki. Main bhi
kitni paagal... hey-hey... mera
matlab... bhulakkad hoon. Achcha...
main chalti hoon.
Rupa storms out of the bedroom as Budhiya steps aside from
the door. Jaanki gives the parting shot with a shrewd smile
on her face.

JAANKI
Phir aana, bahu... main tumhara
intezar karungi.
After a few moments Budhiya peeps from the door. Jaanki
smiles at her. Budhiya smiles back.
JAANKI
Tumhara naam budhiya hai na?
BUDHIYA
Haan.
JAANKI
Bada he pyara naam hai. Achha
batao... school jaati ho ki nahi?
BUDHIYA
Nahi.
JAANKI
Matlab sara din doston ke saath
khelti rehti ho.
BUDHIYA
Dost? Mera toh koi dost nahi hai.
JAANKI
Hmm. Mera bhi koi dost nahi hai.
Arre... kyun na hum dono apas mein
dosti kar lein. Bolo... mujh se
dosti karogi?
BUDHIYA
Aap mere saath khelogi?
JAANKI
Haan... khelungi.
Budhiya thinks for a moment then looks at the smiling face
of Jaanki. She answers with a smile.
BUDHIYA
Haan.
INT./EXT. CATTLE SHED - DAWN
Jaanki feeds a bunch of green grass to a weak cow, inside
the cattle shed. She pats the cow's forehead with care.
BUDHIYA
Yeh gopi hai...
There are two frail bulls tied out in the open. One of the
bulls makes a loud sound.

BUDHIYA
... aur woh baahar humare doh
bail... Heera aur Moti hain. Babuji
inhe mele se laye thay.
Jaanki feels sorry as she looks at the bad condition of the
poor animals. She walks upto the bulls. Tai is standing in a
corner, listening quitely. She has a 'datoon' in her mouth.
JAANKI
Yeh bail kya saari raat bahar thand
mein thithurte rahe hain? Dekho toh
kya haalat ho gayi inki... bus
haddi aur khaal he reh gayi hai.
Arre, koi inki khuraakh ka dhyan
bhi rakhta hai ya nahi?
Tai comes forward. She takes out the datoon from her mouth,
spits and speaks.
TAI
Arre, bahurani... iss ghar mein sab
ko apna pet bharne ki fikar lagi
rehti hai. In jaanwaron ke bare
mein sochne ki fursat he kise hai.
Kehne ko toh gau mata poojaniya
hoti hai... lekin jab se iss
bechari ne doodh dena band kiya
hai... iski taraf koi muh utha kar
dekhta bhi nahi.
BUDHIYA
Yeh bechare Heera-Moti sara sara
din kadi dhoop mein mehnat karte
hai... lekin koi inhe theek se
chara tak nahi daalta.
JAANKI
Yeh toh paap hai. Ek mahapandit ke
ghar mein in bezubaan jaanwaron ke
saath aisa atyachar.
TAI
Ghar mein gai ke hote... doodh
bazar se khareed ke lana padta hai.
Diwakar ko toh apne dharam-karam se
fursat nahi milti. Ghar ke
naukar-chakar toh bus Rupa rani ke
ishare per naachte hain. Ek main he
hoon jo inki khabar lene aa jaya
karti hoon.
BUDHIYA
Aap kab khabar leti hain, tai?
Maine toh kabhi nahi dekha.

TAI
Tu chup kar.
Tai smiles nervously at Jaanki who looks at her
suspeciously. Tai explains.
TAI
Mujh budhiya ke paas hai he kya...
jo in jaanwaron ko khila sakoon.
Aur phir meri kya aukaat jo iss
ghar ki maalkin se kuch kehun. Ab
tum aa gayi ho... iss ghar ki badi
maalkin. Ab toh tumhi Rupa rani se
in jaanwaron ke bare mein kuchh keh
sakti ho... kyun? Hai himmat?
Jaanki looks immedietly at Tai.
TAI
Baatein banana aur sahanbhooti
dikhana aur baat hai, bahu. Tum
thehri nayi-naveli dulhan... aur
Rupa pichle paanch saalon se iss
ghar per apna raj chala rahi hai.
Arre, uski marji ke bina iss ghar
mein ek patta bhi nahi hila sakti
ho tum. Meri mano... toh in
jaanwaron ko inke haal per chhod
doh.
Jaanki thinks for a moment then walks away, towards the
house. Tai speaks to herself with a cunning smile.
TAI
Ab suru hoga... Ayodhya mein
Mahabharat.
Tai had forgotten that little Budhiya is standing next to
her.
BUDHIYA
Kya?
A startled Tai looks at Budhiya and scolds her.
TAI
Tu yahaan kya kar rahi hai? Chal
bhaag yahaan se.
EXT. OPEN FIELD - DAWN
Tribhuvan carries his pick axe on his shoulder as he walks
on the muddy road surrounded by various farms. Village
surpanch THAKUR PRATAP SINGH, 60, approaches him on his
tractor, from the opposite side. The tractor slows down and
stops near Tribhuvan but the engine keeps going.

TRIBHUVAN
Ram-ram, thakur sahab.
THAKUR PRATAP SINGH
Ram-ram, trubhuvan. Aaj badi subah
kheton ka rukh kar liya. Sab theek
hai na? Koi takleef toh nahi hai?
TRIBHUVAN
Aap ke raj mein kya takleef ho
sakti hai, thakur sahab.
THAKUR PRATAP SINGH
Phir yeh chehra kyun utra hua hai
tera? Kya nai maa ne aate he
atyachar shuru kar diya tujh per?
TRIBHUVAN
Naam mat lo uss aurat ka. Babuji se
iss umar mein aise ghatiyapan ki
ummeed nahi thee. Ek atharah saal
ki sunder ladki dekhi aur aap ke
mahaan panditji phisal gaye. Uss
per bahana yeh ki ek abla nari ka
uddhaar karne jaa...
Thakur sahab has had enough of Tribhuvan's rubbish. He
pushes the accelerator and the tractor makes a loud sound.
Tribhuvan stops talking as he looks at the angry Thakur.
Thakur sahab takes his foot off the accelerator, reducing
the sound.
THAKUR PRATAP SINGH
Bahana? Arre, panditji bahana
karenge... kis se? Tujh se? Teri
aukaat kya hai unke saamne? Arre,
apni chhod... iss thakur pratap
singh ki kya aukaat jo panditji ke
charitra per ungli uthaye.
Thakur sahab shuts the engine and speaks in anger.
THAKUR PRATAP SINGH
Panditji ke bare mein aisa sochna
bhi paap hai. Arre, uss bhale manas
ne agar apne bare mein socha hota
toh aaj se bees saal pehle byah
racha chuka hota... jab teri maa
swarg sidhari thee. Apni jawaani ke
bees baras jis baap akele kaat
diye... tujhe maa ki kami mehsoos
tak hone nahi dee... uss baap ke
liye tere muh se yeh bol sunkar
mera sir sharm se jhuk raha hai.

TRIBHUVAN
Lekin, thakur sahab...
THAKUR PRATAP SINGH
Bus... bahot sun li teri bakwaas.
Dafa ho ja yahaan se... warna main
apna aapa kho baithunga.
Tribhuvan hangs his head in shame and walks away. Thakur
pratap singh starts his tractor and drives away.
INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT
Tribhuvan and Vishnu sit on the ground, near the kitchen and
have their dinner. Savitri makesg fresh, hot roti on the
chulha. Rupa serves them while Jaanki listens to them from
the terrace.
Vishnu takes a bite and speaks to Rupa.
VISHNU
Babuji ke hisse ka khana alag
nikaal ke rakh dena bhabhi... ho
sakta hai woh aaj raat he laut
aayein.
RUPA
Itni he fikar hai apne babuji ki
toh byah kyun nahi racha lete? Kab
tak yeh akhand brahmcharya ka
jhanda liye ghoomte rahoge?
SAVITRI
Aur nahi toh kya?
RUPA
Aur ab tumhe apne babuji ki fikar
karne ko koi zaroorat nahi hai,
lalla. Unka khayal rakhnewali jo aa
gayi hai ghar mein. Arre, kab tak
haath mein mehdi rachaye baithi
rahegi, Maharani. Usse kyun nahi
kehte khana pakane ko? Hum bhi zara
dekhen... tumhari chhoti maa ke raj
mein kya khane ko milta hai?
VISHNU
Kuch bhi mile... lekin woh iss
beswad sabzi aur kachhi-pakki roti
se toh achha he hoga.
Vishnu gets up and walks away. Rupa and Savitri feel
insulted by Vishnu's harsh criticism.

EXT. TERRACE - NIGHT
Jaanki looks at Budhiya who is asleep on her small kot. She
covers her up and sits next to her. Savitri's loud voice
reaches her.
SAVITRI (OC)
Dekho ji... ek toh naukaro ki tarah
sare ghar ka kaam karo aur oopar se
inke taane bhi suno. Main kahe deti
hoon... yeh sab mujh se nahi hoga
haan.
EXT. OPEN FIELD - NIGHT
Diwakar shastri carries a cloth bag on his shoulder, and
holds a big flashlight in his hand, as he makes his way to
home. He can see the village houses with nightlamps at a
distance. There are some wild insects cherping away.
INT. TRIBHUVAN'S ROOM - NIGHT
Tribhuvan and Savitri are fast asleep on their bed.
Budhiya and other maids are sleeping on the terrace.
INT. DIWAKAR SHASTRI'S HOUSE - NIGHT
The main door opens and Diwaka shastri enters his house. He
looks tired. He places his thaila on the hook and removes
his kurta.
INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT
Diwakar shastri, in his fresh clothes, wipes his hands with
a towel as he walks towards the kitchen. He places the towel
on his shoulder and lifts the lid off every pots and pans.
There is nothing left for him to eat.
Jaanki watches him from the terrace. Diwakar shastri picks
up a glass, pours some water in it and drinks.
INT. DIWAKAR SHASTRI'S BEDROOM - NIGHT
Diwakar shastri opens the bedroom door and finds Jaanki
standing there with a plate of food in her hand. She speaks
with a smile.
JAANKI
Main jaanti thee ki aap ko der ho
jayegi... iss liye aap ka khana
maine pehle se bacha ke rakkha tha.

DIWAKAR SHASTRI
Meri wajah se agar tum raton ko
jagne lagi toh badi mushkil ho
jayegi.
JAANKI
Mushkilon ka saamna karne himmat
hai mujh mein. Aap meri fikar
chhodiye aur jaldi se khana kha
leejiye.
Jaanki places the plate on the chair as Diwakar shastri
stares at her beautiful face. Jaanki speaks with a smile.
JAANKI
Aise kya dekh rahe hain?
DIWAKAR SHASTRI
Tumhari muskaan ke peeche chupe
huye dukh ko dekh raha hoon.
Smile evaporates from Jaanki's face as Diwakar shastri keeps
staring into her eyes. Jaanki's eyes get moist.
DIWAKAR SHASTRI
Tumhare chalakte hue aansu mujhe
mere apraadh ka bodh kara rahe
hain.
JAANKI
Nahi-nahi... yeh dukh ke aansu
nahi...
DIWAKAR SHASTRI
Toh kya khushi ke aansu hain?
Diwakar shastri wipes tears from Jaanki's face. He speaks
looking into Jaanki's teary eyes.
DIWAKAR SHASTRI
Tumse shaadi karna shayad mere
jeevan ki sabse badi bhool hai.
JAANKI
Yeh... aap... aap kya keh rahe...
DIWAKAR SHASTRI
Main keh raha hoon ki... main apni
iss bhool ke lye tumse kshama maang
raha hoon. Mujhe kshama kar doh.
Diwakar shastri bends down and tries to touch Jaanki's feet.
She steps aside very fast and drops the plate on the floor.
JAANKI
Kyun paap chada rahe hain mujh per?

DIWAKAR SHASTRI
Paap?
Diwakar shastri removes a small metal pot from his cloth
bag.
DIWAKAR SHASTRI
Yeh tumhare pita ki asthiyaan hai.
Main unka antim sanskaar kar ke aa
raha hoon.
JAANKI
Nahi... aap ne kaha tha woh theek
ho jayenge... aap ne kaha tha unhe
sirf maamuli chot aayi hai...
Poor Jaanki breaks down as she takes the metal pot from
Diwakar shastri.
JAANKI
... aap ne kaha tha...
DIWAKAR SHASTRI
Jhooth kaha tha maine.
JAANKI
Jhooth... nahi... aap kabhi jhooth
nahi bolte.
An unconsolable Jaanki runs out of the bedroom.
Jaanki sits on the edge of the terrace with her head resting
on her knees and sobs. Diwakar shastri brings a glass of
water for her. Jaanki looks at Diwakar shastri, he offers
her the glass of water and she takes it.
