A way to overcome the physical disability. Bionics is a study of mechanical systems that function like living organisms or parts of living organisms. Artificial organs are being used to overcome the crisis of donor organs. There are some artificial organs which could be used and many are under process for further modifications.

5. HISTORY :
In 1983, Joao Lobo
Antunes, a Portuguese
doctor , implanted a bionic
eye in a person born blind.
FUTURE ASPECTS :
Argus II will be soon available
in market along with it a deep
research is going on for Argus
III.
ARGUS RETINAL PROSTHESIS

7. HISTORY :
19th
Century
• Count Volta and
Duchenne of Boulogna.
- Stimulated hearing-
electrical stimulation
1978
• Dr. Graeme Clark
inserted first Bionic Ear
into the Rod Saunders –
Worked.
9. FUTURE ASPECTS :
Young children with little or no hearing;
Entirely internal device
Improve clarity
Researchers found a new method that makes flexible, realistic ears out of real
cells from rats, cows and they formed a collagen gel that can take the shape of a
human ear- the gel forms an ear in less than an hour.

11. HISTORY :
• 1958 : Dr. Willem Kolff and
Tetsuzo Akutsu sustain a dog for
90 min. with a PVC artificial heart.
•1967 : Dr. Christian Barnard
transplant a donor heart into a 59
years old man. He survived 18
days.
PVC Heart (1958)
SILICON HEART (1967)
12. • 1969 : Dr. Denton Cooley used
an artificial heart to sustain a
patient. Survived 3 days.
• 1982 : Dr. William De Vries
implants the Jarvik 7 artificial
heart into Dr. Barney Clark.
Survived 112 days

14. FUTURE ASPECT :
Although there are numerous failures
in case of bionic heart transplant, a
French transplant specialist Alain
Carpentier ensured that his model will
be ready for clinical trials by 2011
and for actual use as an alternative to
heart transplants in 2013. He already
has a prototype, using electronic
sensors and made of chemically
treated animal tissues that he calls
pseudo skin.

16. HISTORY :
The history of prosthetic limbs is vast. We
got its trace in ancient Egypt.
First confirmed use of a prosthetic
device, however, is from 950 – 710 B.C.
In 1980s – Introduction of
socket technology.
In 1990s – First
microprocessor controlled
prosthetic knees become
available.
(A continuous improvement and research
is still ongoing)
17. FUTURE ASPECTS :
Researchers are working on permanently
implanting an artificial hand directly to the bone in
arm to eliminate the discomfort currently
associated with artificial limbs.

19. HISTORY :
• In 1964, Kadish first worked on bionic
pancreas.
• In 2005, Damiano and El- Khatib first
began testing the bionic pancreas on pigs.
FUTURE ASPECTS :
• The bionic pancreas is used by people with type I diabetes to control
blood glucose and to deliver insulin.
• It is awaiting for food and drug administration (FDA) approval.
• The goal of the project is to get the device approved for market
distribution by 2017.
