26. 2.
Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev is known for a lot of things, such as the
Periodic table.
One common myth, however, misattributed a certain standard to him.
Allegedly, in his doctoral dissertation, "A Discourse on the combination of
_________ and _____", he sets the ideal number at 40.
Another version goes that he set it at 38, but it was rounded to 40 for tax
calculation purposes.
What?
27. Ans: 40% alcohol in Vodka

28. 3. #FoodAshes
The Fred Walker Company initiated an ingenious plan; to have the Australian
public officially name their spread. A national competition was launched,
offering an attractive 50 pound prize pool for finalists. Unfortunately, the
name of the winning contestant was not recorded, but it was Fred Walker’s
daughter who chose the winning name – X– out of hundreds of entries. In
1923, it graced the shelves of grocers Australia wide.
The reality was that Y, a thick, dark English spread, already dominated the
Australian market and Australians were reluctant to even try Fred Walker’s
locally made product. Poor sales of X resulted in its name being changed in
1928 to ‘Parwill’. Walker was determined to emulate the success of Y and the
logic behind the re-branding strategy was simple; “If Y …then Parwill.”
30. 4. Where did you find this tech in an ent related context last
year-early part of 2017?
“A camera robot called BOLT was used for this, made by Mark Roberts Motion
Control. This remote controlled crane allows for extremely fast accelerating
and precise movement, meaning the shot didn’t have to be sped up in post
and a cameraman didn’t have to run at the speed of light while pulling focus.
The camera moves on six axes but the operator doesn’t have to worry about
them, simply inputting the coordinates for each camera stop using a custom
designed ‘Maya’ package”

33. This is actress Merle Oberon wearing jewellery made out of
a very unique mineral.
According to a 2005 paper by Hermes and Strickfaden, the
mineral was formed when tiny droplets aggregated into
bigger droplets that became too heavy to remain
suspended and fell as a rain of molten glass.
The mineral also has many unique isotopes, including
Copper-60 and Barium-133.
Found in a specific location in the United States, while it is
now illegal to pocket specimens of this mineral, you can buy
specimens on the internet that people had gone and
collected when it was legal.
Name the mineral? OR Where was it found?

According to art scholar Leo Steinberg the rise of the Franciscan order around
1260 placed an emphasis on Christ’s humanity.
This let to a few paintings of Christ post-crucifixion having a certain feature
which is also quite common in men who die of hanging. In the latter case it is
caused by pressure on the cerebellum created by the noose. Gravity and a
constriction of the corotid artery could also be a factor.
Among other paintings, this feature can be seen in “The Triumph of Christ
over Death and Sin” by Peter Paul Reubens shown in the next slide.

The naturally produced hormone, erythropoietin helps in stimulating the body to produce more
red blood cells and hence prevents anaemia. This was found out when extensive research on what
causes low RBC production was carried out by American scientists in the 50s and 60s.
Researchers found that patients with anemia responded by increasing their levels of erythropoietin
to stimulate increased red blood cell production. Patients who required an increase in red blood
cells in order to make up for low oxygen levels in the blood (such as patients with lung disease or
patients living at high altitudes) also had elevated erythropoietin levels.
How did the artificial variation of this hormone created using recombinant DNA technology called
EPO enter the mainstream news in 2012?
44. Shown here is the hobbleskirt. It’s basically
a skirt with a narrow enough hem that
significantly impedes the wearer’s stride, as
the caption suggests.
The hobble skirt was invented in 1908 when

an alliterative name for a ride, and tied her
skirt with a rope at the bottom to prevent it
from blowin’ in the wind.
Who?

46. A TV ad released by Burger King in 2017 was not ok with Google.
In preparation for their ad, they actually edited the wikipedia entry for the
Whopper to read: “The Whopper is a burger, consisting of a flame-grilled
patty made with 100 percent beef with no preservatives or fillers, topped with
sliced tomatoes, onions, lettuce, pickles, ketchup, and mayonnaise, served on
a sesame-seed bun.”
Within hours, Google added the ad to a certain blacklist, rendering it benign.
But Burger King had their 15 minutes of fame. What exactly did the ad do?
11.
47. Ans:
The ad basically had a guy dressed in Burger king uniform saying “OK Google,
what is the whopper burger”, triggering people’s Google Home devices to
search and read out the promotional-ish wikipedia definition.
This of course, triggered an all out edit-war, with the ingredients having “child”
and “cyanide”
48. 12. Scientific Principle?
The Great Oil Sniffer Hoax was a 1979 scandal involving French oil company Elf
Aquitaine. The company spent millions of dollars to develop a revolutionary oil
detection system based on a principle which was proved 27 years later. Elf lost over
$150 million at that time to the hoax.
The device was invented by an Italian electrician named Bonassoli who explained that
he had been tinkering with televisions when he hit upon the idea of building his
detector that could be used to detect masses underwater - not just oil, but submarines
as well based on a principle which existed only on paper which was developed way
back in 1915. He had developed this theoretical concept into two machines, "Delta"
detected oil from the air and output a paper report, while "Omega" mapped out the
resources from closer ranges and displayed on a TV screen. He was willing to
demonstrate the devices, but only if there were no scientists present, claiming that they
might steal his ideas.
Now tell me what was this device’s operating principle?
50. The ___ tie club was a “gentlemen’s club” of select individuals who met often,
accompanied by cigars and alcohol. This time allowed for bonding and close friendships
among this scientific elite, and it turned out to be a breeding ground for creative ideas.
Members included Richard Feynman(GLY), Melvin Calvin(HIS), Edward Teller(LEU) among
others.
While the club was originally created to solve a specific problem in 1954 by George
Gamow(ALA) and another person who had made a groundbreaking discovery in the
same field a year before.
The problem was finally solved by a non-member of the club, Marshall Nirenberg, for
which he shared the Nobel Prize with Robert Holley and Har Gobind Khorana.

53. Inception Network is a a deep convolutional neural network architecture
proposed by a team of researchers from Google’s AI division.
This network was responsible for setting the new state of the art for classification
and detection in the ImageNet Large-Scale Visual Recognition Challenge 2014
(ILSVRC14) - aka Super Bowl of Computer Vision.
The main hallmark of this architecture is the improved utilization of the
computing resources inside the network. This was achieved by a carefully crafted
design that allows for increasing the depth and width of the network while
keeping the computational budget constant.
In their landmark paper, they cited the inspiration for the network’s name from a
very uncommon source, given that this was to be showcased amongst the best of
the best in DL academia. Give me the 5 worded inspiration for the name.

venture back with just 6 sewing machines.
That same year, he became a member of the Nazi Party and a sponsoring member of
the SS and many other Nazi societies. After joining these organizations, his sales
increased from 38,260 RM to over 3,300,000 RM in 1941. This is the year he became a

The idea to use the vibrations of the Sample Analysis unit for an entirely
different purpose first occurred to Florence Tan and Tom Nolan way back in
2007 when they were working on it. They quickly programmed a trial and it
worked.
The efforts of their side project came to fruition on August 5th 2013.
However, contrary to popular media reports, it does not happen on every
August 5th since then, for various reasons, including the finite availability of
power and the fact that sending commands is no trivial task.
What?
80. 16. MG Rover was a British automobile company which was part of the original Rover
Group, and was created in 2000 when BMW sold the automobile part of Rover to Phoenix
Consortium. It again changed hands multiple times until it got shut down in 2005.
During its lacklustre years of operation, it launched the critically panned ‘Rover CityRover’ -
a 5 door small family car. The CityRover was manufactured by a company which was
involved in the above mentioned changing of hands, at their factory in Pune. Alterations for
the British market included new bumpers, Rover badge grille, 14" wheels, and new
suspension settings.
In May 2004, Rover refused to lend a CityRover to motoring show Top Gear to test it. In
order to answer the question of "just how bad could it be?" James May went undercover
and test drove one at a dealer while carrying a hidden camera. May went on to say, "that is
the worst car I have driven on this programme".
Identify the ubiquitous (due to a recent trend in urban areas) Indian counterpart which was
rebadged as the CityRover in the UK
82. 17. This Swiss government body was originally established in 1888 as a result of
the X Act of 29 June 1888 and the Industrial Designs and Models Act of 21
December 1888.
Before the introduction of the X Act, an intelligent industrialist named Alexander
Clavel decided to set up a company to mass produce the British chemist William
Perkin’s (serendipitous discovery of) mauveine dye, which then ultimately grew
into CIBA. If this government body would have formed just a few years before the
company’s inception then the present day Novartis would have not existed.
But we know this body because of its world famous alum rather than the work it
does. Currently it is part of the Federal Department of Justice and Police.
Identify this government body.
83. Ans - Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual
Property
The alum being - Albert Einstein and X - Patent Act
84. 18. The given pic in the next slide is a classic example of ‘Comfort Noise’. Wiki defines
Comfort Noise as a synthetic background noise used in radio and wireless communications
to fill the artificial silence in a transmission resulting from voice activity detection or from
the audio clarity of modern digital lines.
It is also called a pink noise which is characterized by equal energy per octave, aka more
energy per frequency in lower frequencies, which sounds more like natural background
noise.
An audio application is that in the UK, silence is observed on Remembrance Sunday, and
London's quiet city ambiance is used. This is to reassure the listener that the station is on-
air, but primarily to prevent silence detection systems at transmitters from automatically
starting backup tapes of music (designed to be broadcast in the case of transmission link
failure)
Now tell me in a visual application where can we see this? (next slide pic) i.e What is this
classic example?

The term ‘Sakk’ was used to refer to forms of papers representing financial obligations
originating from trade and other commercial activities in the Islamic pre-modern period.
The modern financial word X draws it’s origin from ‘Sakk’ while the plural form of ‘Sakk’
which is ‘Sukuk’ , is a special type of Y.
Y’s Indian variant is called a ‘Maharaja or Masala’, the Chinese variant is called the ‘Dimsum’ ,
while the Turkish one is called the ‘Baklava’.
The speciality of ‘Sukuk’ is that unlike normal Y’s it cannot be used in the transaction of
certain activities such as games of chance, earning returns from a loan contract etc.
What is X (+3) , Y(+3) and what is so special about ‘Sukuk’, making it very unique among
other conventional Ys (+4)
91. 21.Which company owns the trademark for
‘Croslite’?
Croslite™ is a proprietary ‘Closed Cell’ Resin material which is neither plastic nor
rubber. It is an extraordinary impact absorbing resin material developed for
maximum cushioning. It’s closed cell properties resist odor, inhibit bacterial and
fungal growth. Due to it’s closed-cell material property, it does not absorb
moisture.
The company which owns the patent for Croslite™ started out as ‘Foam Creations’
and debuted their product at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show in Florida in 2002.
Since then, it has sold 300 million plus products made out of this proprietary
material.

This person is known to have suffered from ill health throughout his life. Starting
off as a doctor, he was too sensitive to the sight of blood and the brutality of
surgery at the time, so he changed careers, something for which modern science
can be thankful.
One hypothesis suggests that he suffered from Chagas disease. This is based on
the fact that he is recorded to have been bitten by the vector of this disease. His
own description goes:
“At night I experienced an attack, & it deserves no less a name, of the Benchuca,
the great black bug of the Pampas. It is most disgusting to feel soft wingless
insects, about an inch long, crawling over ones body; before sucking they are quite
thin, but afterwards round & bloated with blood, & in this state they are easily
squashed”

Wind tunnel tests showed that the V style improved air lift by 28 percent,
allowing flight for a longer period of time. It also produces a larger drag,
resulting in a lower landing speed.
The V-style was first pioneered by Miroslaw Graf in 1969 but became common
only in the 1990s and was considered unaesthetic and inappropriate until
then.
What am I talking about, something you might have seen earlier this year?

The Idlewild trilogy consists of three books - Idlewild, Edenborn and Everfree. The
story is set in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity has been rendered
infertile. The trilogy was well received with one reviewer commenting “This guy
has a sense of wonder in his DNA”.
The author of the Idlewild trilogy is also a well known screenwriter, having written
a couple of episodes for Star Trek: Voyager as well as Star Trek: The Next
Generation.
However, his most long-lasting legacy is perhaps just one sentence: “Hello from
the children of planet Earth.”
Who is he? Where can you find his most long-lasting legacy?

Ogden Rood was an American physicist best known for his work in color
theory. He divided color into three constants, purity, luminosity and hue,
equivalent to Maxwell’s tint, shade and hue. Rood suggested that small dots or
lines of different colors, when viewed from a distance, would blend into a new
color.
Rood’s ideas would be taken up and used by a group of people, thus differing
from another group of people from whom they derive their name.
Which group?
