A quiz set on Disney Pixar's Cars universe that I prepared for one of the sessions of Qutopia, the quizzing society of KIIT University, Bhubaneswar. The questions are fairly workoutable and one doesn't necessarily need to have watched the movies to answer.
4. Rules
• 10 questions.
• Clockwise order.
• Infinite pounce and bounce.
• +10 for correct direct/pass question.
• +10/-10 on pounce.
5. Q.1
Pixar’s development artist Jorgen Klubien, who came up with the
concept of the Cars universe, recalls, “In the 1980s some
enthusiastic folks got the idea of making a three-wheeled one-
person car that ran on electricity.
They put it into production and it worked great in the city, but out on
the highway it was too slow. People also thought the car wasn’t
particularly good looking. I thought the electric car was ahead of its
time, and it struck me as odd that my fellow Danes didn’t agree. It
reminded me of X, a literary fairy tale. This famous Danish character
wasn’t accepted at first, but in the end it proved to be right on the
money.”
So using X as his inspiration, Klubien mapped out a scenario for
“The Yellow Car”, a small foreign automobile which suddenly rolled
into an American town. Initially, the small-minded local residents
are suspicious and distrustful, but over time this new arrival
eventually earns the respect and affection of these somewhat
prejudiced locals.
Which famous fairy tale served as the inspiration for Cars movie?
9. Q.2
The X, also known as the Main Street of America or the
Mother Road, was one of the original highways within the
U.S. Highway System. It originally ran from Chicago,
Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New
Mexico, and Arizona before ending at Santa Monica,
California, covering a total of 2,448 miles (3,940 km).
In Cars, X is the route that Radiator Springs is on,
somewhere in western Arizona or eastern New Mexico.
Back in 1965, the town was popular. However, when
Interstate 40 was build, Radiator Springs and X lost it's
population, and was even taken off the map. 40 years
later, Lightning got lost in Radiator Springs and wrecked
the road.
X?
12. Q.3
Pictured in the next slide is a minor character
appearing in Cars 2. The character seems to be
modelled after a 1960s Ferrari Formula 1 car.
What could be the possible relation between
Francesco Bernoulli, thought to be the antagonist of
the movie, and this character?
17. Q.4
Another minor character in Cars, “X likes things
clean and simple. He doesn't go for the flashy colors,
and gaudy stickers that adorn some of his fellow
racers. He prefers a simple sleek design, and feels
this creates a bold statement, one that says, “I think
different.””
This character pays tribute to a person central to
Pixar’s history.
Identify the character or the person being paid
tribute to.
21. Q.5
Despite being a children’s movie, Pixar has included a
number of adult jokes in all three Cars movies.
In the first movie, Mack is very tired and wants to stop.
He is longing to go over to the Top Down Truckstop,
but McQueen convinces him otherwise, wanting to hurry
up and get to California so he can gain sponsorship
from Dinoco.
Top Down Truckstop’s sign claims “All ___________
Waitresses”, meaning all waitresses working there are
“lidless”.
Fill in the blanks with a term from automotive jargon that
would imply that the waitresses are scantily clad.
25. Q.6
“X, the famously sleek and seriously fast #2 Grand Touring Sports
champion, has been a determined and winning racer for nearly his
entire young life. Like all youngster cars, X spent his childhood
going to school, taking karate lessons and winning the British
Karting Championship by the age of 10.
Today, the celebrated native Brit continues to bring an exceptional
work ethic and soft-spoken confidence to the race course where
his extraordinary achievements speak for themselves via a
spotless track record on the junior and professional circuits. With
his striking metallic black and yellow paint scheme, X will
represent Great Britain at the World Grand Prix. He also carries
the flag of Grenada, home to his family who emigrated to Britain
in the 1950s. His unrivaled technical skills, natural speed ability,
and cool, karate-inspired attitude make him a powerful contender
too.”
Character description of which real-life racing driver
featuring in Cars 2?
31. Her eyes are in her headlights and
windows are fully transparent which reveal
her interior, making her different from any
other car
32. Q.8
Luigi, who is a Fiat 500, naturally is a big fan of a
certain racing team from his homeland. He has the
following number plate:
What is the number plate referring to?
36. Q.9
In the early 1900s, car dealers would try to create publicity for
their new automobiles by hosting car races. In 1922, a
championship race was held in Pikes Peak, Colorado. Entered as
one of the contestants was Noel Bullock and his Model T,
named "Old ___."
Since Old ___ looked the worse for wear as it was unpainted
and lacked a hood, many spectators compared it to a tin can.
By the start of the race, the car had the new nickname of "Tin
_____”. But to everyone's surprise, Tin _____ won the race.
The surprise win of Tin _____ was reported in newspapers
across the country, leading to the use of the nickname "Tin
_____" for all Model T cars.
The oldest car in Radiator Springs, also a Model T, has been
given the same name.
Simply fill in the blank with the nickname of a royal personality.
40. Q.10
Lightning McQueen competes in stock car racing. This form of
motorsport has an interesting origin story. In the early 1900s,
drivers in understated or otherwise ordinary-looking cars
skillfully navigated treacherous mountain roads, carrying
something, often while escaping the authorities.
Their cars looked ordinary, or “stock”, But inside, both the
mechanical components of the cars and the drivers behind the
wheel were far from ordinary. The vehicles were outfitted with
heavy-duty shocks and springs and high powered engines. The
rear seats were usually removed to fit in more of the “product”
they were carrying.
Later on, many of these skillful drivers agreed upon a set of
rules and formalized this form of motorsport, leading to the
formation of NASCAR.
What “product” were these drivers carrying?
