Mother Teresa, born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in 1910 in North Macedonia, became a nun and joined the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland in 1928. She went to India in 1929 where she founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950, dedicating her life to serving the poor, sick, and dying in Kolkata. The Missionaries of Charity grew internationally with missions in over 130 countries providing hospices, homes for children, and centers for the blind and disabled. Mother Teresa received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her humanitarian work and was canonized as a saint by Pope Francis in 2016, cementing her global impact and legacy of inspiring compassion for those in need
