- 2. The genre drama is based on real life with real life situations, realistic characters and realistic settings. Drama needs to be realistic so that the audience can relate to the story. However, it has to be dramatic (or unrealistic) so that it is entertaining. If it was fully realistic then it wouldn't be entertaining for the audience.
- 3. The storyline has to be dramatic with peaks and troughs. This keeps the audience emotionally involved. There are also many climaxes and anti climaxes to keep the tension on going and to keep the audience interested and involved.
- 4. Drama usually follows the journey of a character, whether literally or a personal journey (development of that character). The character needs to be realistic so the audience can relate to that character. There are many different characters but the three main characters are the main character who takes you on their journey, a love interest of the main character and a villain who is the enemy of the main character. The characters need to socially interact with each other and the relationships between each of the characters is very clear.
- 5. The whole point of a drama is some sort of conflict, usually between the main character and the villain. The conflict can be either realistic or unrealistic.
- 6. At the end there is usually a sense of realisation (e.g. in Love Actually The Prime Minister realises that he loves Natalie). This realisation usually ends with a happily ever after.
