4. The programme is unique in Europe
in a number of ways:
1. Each of the 165 projects has been individually designed to
serve both the pupils’ specific learning needs and the community at large.
2. The team has to meet tight timelines as all 165 projects go through the
design, build and maintain phases nearly simultaneously, with a challenging average
construction period of just 14 months.
3. AG Real Estate COPiD has taken on all project/programme
management duties for 165 projects, managing up to 125 construction
sites at the same time. The company functions as a learning organization, continually shaping its
actions and those of other key players as the program progresses.
5. The programme is unique in Europe
in a number of ways:
4. On a daily basis, up to 2,000 builders are working on site
to complete the projects.
5. From concept to construction, each project balances cost
effectiveness, scope and quality. The school boards pay off the new
buildings in annual installments, from delivery until the end of the 30-year maintenance period.
8. On … society
Schools of Tomorrow provides
quality buildings.
In addition, €89 million is being
spent on sports equipment,
educational technology etc., all to
create a healthful and stimulating
learning environment.
9. On … the economy
Schools of Tomorrow has been a
boon to the construction industry.
School construction and renovation
projects have positive knock-on
effects for the host city/town: the
new school serves as a catalyst for
the neighbourhood’s revival.
9
10. On … the environment
Outdated school buildings and
makeshift solutions are huge energy
guzzlers. From the earliest phase,
Schools of Tomorrow focuses on
structures and processes that are
environmentally responsible and
resource-efficient.
The program includes 8 passive
schools. For 30% of the projects,
soil quality has been analyzed
and/or remediated.

12. Why “Schools of Tomorrow” deserves an award
1. Cost-effective solution to an urgent problem:
overcrowded and/or outdated energy consuming school infrastructure across Flanders.
2. Shining example of mass customization:
165 projects gain tailor-made, state-of-the-art infrastructure, all at the same time, while the
process management is nearly industrialized.
3. Positive impact on the communities:
enhancing the health and productivity of students, teachers and staff, spurring the
development of joint-use facilities that are centers of the community. In 20% of the projects,
archeological discoveries have been found, preserved and even integrated in the design.
