I am going to provide you with a brief overview of the projects I completed this summer, my accomplishments, and the training and development that I have experienced throughout this summer with Eaton.
By listening to my presentation, you will develop a better understanding of Electrical Sector IT that could be used to help you in your decision regarding which sector of Eaton is right for you.
Attending BGSU where I just completed my Sophomore year of college.
1.) –
a. Developed process maps of the Oracle Order Management System to show how synergy sales are recorded
i. Synergy sales are, basically, sales that Eaton would not have made, had Eaton not acquired Cooper
b. To accomplish this task I worked with functional and technical analysts on a global scale to gather info
c. While gathering info and mapping the processes, I identified risks where synergy sales might not be recorded
d. Finally, I communicated these risks to stakeholders for risk mitigation through a process map review presentation
2. –
a. Secondly, I created job-aids for Vista and Global Vista.
i. Vista and Global Vista are older order management systems that Eaton uses
b. These JA’s allow users to maintain the control tables on Vista and GV
i. Control Tables basically hold information that allow for synergy sales to be automatically recorded in the Order Management System
c. To accomplish this assignment I had to learn how to use Vista and GV, and work with functional analysts to understand requirements
-
a. For my third project, I supported the synergy sales site by implementing changes, such as adding new fields to 70+ site lists, configuring permissions, and configuring web parts of the site
b. Frequently troubleshoot issues after the upgrade to SharePoint 2010, from user access to performance related problems
c. Created JA that shows users how to properly use the site
d. Work allows for Eaton Electrical Sector to continue to produce and record synergy sales, as the synergy sales process is solely reliant on the site I supported
2. –
a. Fourth project, I served as PM, creating a project charter and keeping notes on the project status
b. Met with knowledgeholders familiar with capabilities of Siebel CRM and web form solutions to learn about the capabilities of these possible solutions
c. Met with stakeholders to determine requirements, set scope of the project, and work to define a solution
d. Overall, my work will help with the development of a new, more efficient, and seamless way of creating and tracking synergy sales
-
a. Fifth, final project was replacing of a faulty network device in Avery Creek, NC, a vital customer service center
i. Network device was vital to customer service of Avery Creek being able to access the internet, JOE, an, ultimately, Eaton’s customers
b. I had to first learn Eaton’s networking standards and protocols by reading documentation
c. In the process, the network team and I also upgraded the IOS of the networking devices (think of this as the operating system of the network device that allows it to run)
d. Overall, my work allowed a production network to continue to work, and customer service to work with customers
I have talked about the work that I have done, here is one of the process maps of the Oracle Order Management System that I created
I would like to focus on this part of the process map to explain a challenge I faced
In this part of the process map, I had trouble determining which module, or part of Oracle was used, and I also had trouble determining how Sales Orders were created
I worked with functional analysts in Europe and Asia to determine these 2 items
However, I had trouble getting the information that I needed in the beginning because I did not provide enough background on the project and show its importance
Realized this with the help of the Working Globally course I took with Eaton – presented enough background and was able to get the information that I needed.
- PROLaunch Review sessions with Mark along with IT Project Management Courses on EU
- Worked with mentor to develop a training plan for SharePoint based off of online resources and SharePoint courses on EU
- Completed EU Working Globally course at the Cherrington facility to develop a greater understanding of how to work effectively and respectively with
numerous diverse cultures
Leadership interviews shed light on diverse paths and skillsets that can be successful in IT, importance of will to challenge self continuously to succeed, recommendations for the path that I want to take in Enterprise Networking.
Gave impromptu speeches during Toastmaster’s meetings; gained confidence in speaking in front of others and came to realize when I used filler words
I-Opt Self Awareness test allowed me to see my strengths and weaknesses (more task oriented, so relationships sometimes suffer) and provided recommendations upon how to change myself for improvement
Now better at using minimal information to develop preliminary work, then ask questions of knowledge holders to fill in blanks. Similarly, better at pushing for results despite limited information through collaboration with others
Through Oracle process maps, stakeholders were able to see end product of their requests, revise how they approach asking IT to solve problems in the future
Work with SharePoint allows for synergy sales to continue, for reporting on synergy sales to be more intuitive, due to site changes implemented and troubleshooting performed
Creation of Vista and Global Vista JA’s allows synergy sales to be recognized automatically, Oracle process maps clearly point to where improvements can be made in recording of synergy
Overall, my work this summer supports processes that will help Eaton to realize its goal of $500M in synergy sales
Key to understand a functional area of business to be able to quickly see where and how IT can be used to increase efficiency and effectiveness
Always look for challenges and put yourself outside of your comfort zone to grow and succeed.
Take assignments others won’t, even if you’re inexperienced in the area – a great way to show will to dedication company success and will to learn new skills.
Continually manage and maintain constructive relationships with others for more fulfilling and productive work experience.
End: Overall, I have gained a great deal of technical skills, budding project management skills, and developed further in the area of core competencies. Ultimately, I am excited apply all that I have gained from this internship experience with Eaton to my schooling, and to any future professional experience, hopefully with Eaton and in the field Enterprise Networking!
Thank you for the attention and time you have taken to learn about my experience with Eaton. Now I will open the floor to questions.
I am very interested in any networking related internships that Eaton may offer.
