What Is Historical Testimony
Introduction Perhaps, in one or the other, we all have experiences that we have gone through and they completely altered our lives. Evidently, we all
have some unforgettable experiences, with some having the best and others have the worst kind of experiences. History is documented through the
narration of testimonies by the victims of the experiences. Over the years, there is a lot that has happened in the world and all the occasions, there
were people who were left to tell the stories. The holocaust is one of the worst events in the world that people had to endure; millions of people were
killed in cold blood but there were survivors who lived to tell the story. Through their testimonies, we all get to know and connect with their
experiences....show more content...
Other testimonies have touch of joy and hope. Depending on the nature of the event the testimony is being narrated, emotion vary as the testimony
continue to be narrated. In the book Night by Elie Wiesel, he raised some significant moral and ethical questions when he witnessed traumatic scenes
such as burning alive babies, young boy being hung, people fighting against one another for food, which led to his loss of faith in god and humanity. In
the video testimony of Renee, from around the 22th minute, until the one hour mark, the testimony is characterized by sad emotions but the emotions
changes to joyful in the 1.37 minutes mark, when she talks about the individual who used to help the Jews. "Never shall I forget that night, the first
night in camp, which has turned my life into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed. Never shall I forget that smoke. Never shall I
forget the little faces of the children, whose bodies I saw turned into wreaths of smoke beneath a silent blue sky", (Wiesel, 1982.pg. 32) that's an
example of sad emotion during a testimony. The testimony intended audience also depends on the nature of the event. In most cases, the target
audience of testimonies are historians who document the events that have shaped the world in different dimensions. Any other individuals

Essay on My Personal Reading History
Personal Reading History When I was a younger I don't remember if I was read to or not, but I read a lot of books. I enjoy reading books because
they allow me to reach new heights in my imagination. At my age many kids say that reading is boring and is for losers. I think it's cool to read and
will continue to read throughout my life. I have read many different types of books from fiction to biographies. The longest book I ever read was a book
called Dragon Rider by Cornella Funke. It was five hundred and thirty five pages! When it comes to reading I am a superstar! When I'm reading I am
able to get a moral lesson from what I read, so it ends up helping me in the long run of my life
I have had numerous amounts of positive...show more content...
She also taught me to finish something if I started it, and that carried over to my reading. If I start reading a book I always finish it and do my best
to understand it. So, she instilled what I know about reading and she influenced the way I read. She always told me, when I was younger, to
pronounce my words right so that when I get older I would pronounce my words right. All that she has said to me and taught me when I was coming
up as a younger child helped me get to the level of reading I am on today and also to the level of understanding I have of all the words I read. Without
her encouraging me in this way I would have had problems understanding things that I read and wouldn't be as smart as I have grown to be. I am
very thankful of how I was brought up as a kid. When I'm reading, it doesn't really matter where I read. When I'm reading I go into a different world
and get to a place where I feel as if I'm part of the story and can relate to the main character and what he or she is going through. Also, when I'm
reading I think the best place for me would be where it's quiet because I find it easier to concentrate in silence. I also read better when I'm upset
because it gives me an outlet to release anger and allows me to get my work done. All throughout my life, I've had many good experiences reading.
When it comes to reading, for me, good reading just comes

Essay On Prehistory And History
Prehistory literally means "before history". It is derived from the Latin word which means "before" (Prehistory Wikipedia, 2011). This was the era
when there were no written records yet about the existence of the first wave of ancient humans. This was also the time when the periods were divided
into subgroup system which consists of the Stone Age, Bronze Age and the Iron Age.
Prehistory gave rise to the emergence of civilizations. This was also the time when the evolution of the early human beings was influenced by some
inventions such as the writing system. So basically, prehistory is the time when the first set of human beings came into existence along with their
discoveries and inventions.
"History (from Greek бј±ПѓП„ОїПЃОЇО±, historia, meaning "inquiry, knowledge acquired by investigation")[2] is the study of the past, particularly
how it relates to humans and it can also refer to the academic discipline which uses narrative to examine and analyze a sequence of past events"
(History, Wikipedia, 2014). The term history was coined after Aristotle used it in one his studies called the "Inquiries about animals". However this
Greek word in which the term history originated was also borrowed into Classical Latin as historia which means...show more content...
Prehistory that later became a history provides us with details of how people lived to survive during those early ages when there is no technological
developments yet. So these historical events and information serve as an inspiration and foundation for us to keep growing and improving as long as
we preserve the ancient tradition and culture. Both the prehistory and history has been an instrument on how our cultural heritage was shaped. That is
why if we have some confusions about our heritage, we always go back to how it started in the prehistoric era and what were recorded as

The Importance of the Study of History Essay
Most universities require every student, regardless of their major, to take at least two history courses. Most students take these history courses because
they are required to do so. This raises the question, why study history? What is the importance of history to a common being? History is something that
has happened and is factual. By knowing these facts, its students can learn how to progress and advance not making the same mistakes. Studying history
also provides a sense of respect and pride from its students towards a society. History can also help its students improve many skills needed for other
fields of life. The study of history is very important to a society.

Ancient Athenians introduced the ideology of a rule by democracy. Without excessive study of the democracy of the Athenians and its effectiveness,
America would not have been born. In order to inhibit any uprisings to power, such as that which occurred to the democracy of Romans, the
government of United States introduced the concept of checks and balances between the branches of government. Without the leisure of learning from
the fall of the Roman democracy and making adjustments to prevent that sort of happening, even the strongest democracy could have fallen. History is
used as a tool of learning from the setting of the prices of market products to the decision to overthrow Saddam Hussein.
Famous philosopher George Santayana once said, "A country without memory is a country of madmen" (Szasz). America is a country of tremendous
nationalism and tradition. To picture the respect this nation gives to its predecessors, one just needs to examine the US flag. While the flag shows fifty
stars representing the fifty states, the majority of the flag is occupied by thirteen stripes giving homage to the original thirteen colonies, upon which the
nation is founded. Recognizing the struggles of the people of the past brings newfound pride and patriotism to the minds of the people. An old man
lying on his deathbed usually tries to remember his life from that of early childhood to the elderly present. He cherishes all the good times of the past,

In late antiquity (161–565 CE) to the early middle ages the origins and development of early biographies and hagiographies were beginning to occur
and transform. In this essay, I will argue how and why people wrote biographical writings by referring to the works of Augustine's Confessions,
Einhard's Life of Charlemagne and the hagiography, Perpetua. First of all, it is important to remember that biographical writings at first were
regarded as a mere way of writing down history. Focusing on one individual's life events, the genre didn't begin to emerge until the 18th century,
hence why historians should be careful when analysing such sources (Kendall) . Early biographies from these periods tend to focus on the lives of
kings, saints and other notable people. They were derived to inspire people and perhaps lead a more religious, holy life. This is since most the
people who were writing these works were monks, hermits and priests using their knowledge and understanding of these people to help raise
awareness of their lives. Many were paid by noble kings to write their biographies to legitimise their right to rule and to put away any criticism.
Secondly, a biography is a person's life written from the perspective of another. It is typically written in third person, different from an autobiography
which is written by that particular person on their own lives, written in the first person. One such biography was Einhards, Life of Charlemagne, or Vita

The Importance Of Historical Writing
Historical writing can be done in a number of ways. Based on the approach, historical writing can be very compelling or lack usefulness. In Stono,
there are four different historical approaches to writing. All pertaining to the same event, the Stono slave rebellion. In New Social History, Hoefferle
approaches history in an analytic, more scientific approach. Looking at the social economic factors, and using social science methods, to understand
history. Hoefferle argues that race, and gender, shaped the social history. In The Power of History, Appleby argues that historical writing,
historiographical analysis, is translating. She argues that historical writers are translators to the rest of society, of what history is most relevant. In
When Fish Walk on Land, Eustace argues that since 1970, social history has broken the one synthesis mold. She argues there has to be a compilation,
and balance, of synthesis, fragmentation, and a narrative, in historical writing. In Conflict and the "Slave Community," Forret argues the psychological
and social implications of slavery. He argues that they were put in situations that led them to violence. In interpreting the Stono slave rebellion, Forret's
argument contributes the most to understanding why, when, and how. Forret's argument aids in understanding the revolt, pertaining to psychological,
and societal influences. In Anatomy of a Revolt, Peter H. Wood provides a classic interpretation of the revolt. He argues that

History : A Very Short Introduction Essay
In History: A Very Short Introduction, Arnold weaves together various anecdotes including a 14th century murder, an epic regarding the corybantic
slaughter of cats in France, the varying accounts of a Sojourner Truth speech, and many more stories to emphasize why history matters and the
problems inherent in its recording. Throughout his novel, he contests the stance taken by Thucydides, a notable Greek historian. Thucydides lived
from 460 BCE to 400 BCE and was famous for his work, The History of the Peloponnesian War, which recounted the conflict between Athens and
Sparta. Thucydides firmly believed that history was meant to solely record the stories of politics, the state and great men – a belief that John Arnold
throughly opposes. With his beliefs and narratives, he created a precedent that negatively influenced historiography for many years to come, for
historians chose to disregard the lives and stories of the common man. It was this precedent that the historian Arnaldo Momigliano referred to as
Thucydides' Tower. "Arnaldo Momigliano (a modern author) remarked that having shut himself up in this tower of political history, Thucydides
wanted to confine all of us there too" (34). The idea of Thucydides' Tower itself refers to a metaphorical prison out of which historians could only
see politics, war and the actions of great men; Looking out from the tower, their vision was far too narrow to see the lives and stories of the everyday
man. Indeed, if Arnold wished to have a

Essay on Four Eras of Writing
History has evolved over the last two centuries. In the introduction to Interpretations of American History edited by Francis G. Couvares, et al., he
states that the transition of the way history was interpreted has only "linked the past more strongly to the present" (Couvares 1). Before, historians
–mostly white male– used to report only about "male" topics but since then, different issues have transformed the way history used to be. Over the last
400 years, the four different stages that have reshaped the writing of American history have been the providential, the rationalist, the nationalist, and the
professional. Late– nineteenth–century historians, usually called "historicists" or "positivists" believed that history was like science...show more

Most historians during this time were wealthy and with a high position in society, hence the style of their writing. Because of the way they thought of
themselves, their history explained how the "enlightened" world was a success because of men like them. According to Couvares, Jefferson's Notes on
the State of Virginia very much sums up the thought of the rationalists where they were the ones who achieved greatness, it wasn't God driven.
However, the rationalists were not that far off from the providential it's because their story "still pointed upward" (Couvares 6). As the nineteenth
century went on, historians started to see "America as the triumph of Anglo–Saxon people over inferior races" (Couvares 6). They thought that because
America had overcome other "inferior" races that they were better. Couvares explains how Bancroft organized America's history around three themes:
"progress, liberty, and Anglo–Saxon destiny" (Couvares 6). This is where the third stage comes in. Their idea that the Teutonic people were supposed
to spread "freedom across the globe" was the start to their sense of pride, love, and nationalism. Not only were men, but also female historians hooked
on this idea. Helen Hunt Jackson wrote about white–Indian relations, which at the time was a big obstacle to jump; while at the same time
anthropologists beginning to study these relationships. Around the 1870s, though, Bancroft seemed like

What is History? Essay
What is History?
The definition of history, is a question which has sparked international debate for centuries between the writers, readers, and the makers of history. In
the words of acclaimed historian Edward Gibbon, "History is indeed little more than the register of the crimes, follies and misfortunes of mankind." A
more romantic view on the subject was taken by Cicero. He said, "History is the witness that testifies the passing of time. It illuminates reality, vitalizes
memory, provides guidance of daily life and brings us tidings of antiquity" History, described in the simplest of terms, can be seen as a record of events
that have occurred in the past that the historian has taken the trouble to document. It is the...show more content...
There is of course the argument, that even primary source evidence can be somewhat tainted. Propaganda by rulers and governments has been used a
major tool to promote popularity amongst their people. For example, in Russia at the turn of the century writers who wrote critically about the
internal affairs of government were censured, persecuted and sometimes imprisoned or executed. In 1537 to 1574, The massive censorship exercised
by Cosimo I de' Medici of Florence precipitated a decline in historiography in Florence. The extreme wealth and power of the Medici family
extended even further into the art of the Renaissance period and their depiction was prevalent as saintly figures in the works of these artists. Fear
of persecution could drive an otherwise intelligent scholar to be biased and one sided. Even today bias and prejudice is apparent in the accounting
of daily events in newspapers and television. The events revealed to the public are those which the editor or director chooses to be relevant. The
Daily Telegraph for example, is widely perceived as being supportive of the Tories. In the world of films we never read 'this is a true story' in the
credits but that it is 'based on a true story'. The director, has used artistic licence to inject either a romantic or

Historical Perspective Essay The theory of adaption model developed over 40 years ago by nursing theorist Castilla Roy, is used in many fields of
nursing especially areas of humanities and human science. Nursing theory provides the structural framework necessary for practice, and helps to further
nursing knowledge providing an understanding of the scientific process, and the nurse's role in the health care setting (Colley, 2003). According to
Shosha and Kaladeh (2012) Roy's model provided the nursing profession with a framework to help further model–based research with a

For example, theories vary in their level of abstraction with the more abstract a grand theory and the less abstract a middle range theory (MRT). Roy
developed a grand theory that the person is basically an adaptive system, considering the person holistically. Roy's grand theory lead to a separate
middle–range theories broken down into four adaptive modes: physiological mode, self concept mode, role function mode, and interdependence mode
(Fawcett, 2005). Roy saw the concept related to person, environment, and nursing as a central part of nursing practice. She also defines the goal of
nursing as promotion of the four adaptive modes. For instance, if a person's physical and emotional needs are met, he or she is more likely experience
faster healing with better outcomes. In this aspect the nurse becomes a key player in helping to promote an adaptive environment. An example of
physiological modes related to adaption can be providing basic needs (i.e., rest, nutrition, oxygen, elimination). Meeting the psychosocial needs could
incorporate helping a person cope by meeting their spiritual or emotional needs. Conclusion
Research is important for the improvement to further the knowledge in nursing providing evidence based practice nursing theory. Models such as the

Reflection About History
Knowing and understanding the past helps open doors to the future. As the old saying goes "history repeats itself". And if we didn't study American
History, there would be no hope for the future. Without the knowledge of the past, Americans couldn't prevent the negative things from reoccuring.
Our nation is stronger because superiors recognized the failures in the past and prevented them from occurring in the future. History doesn't just
come from a textbook in school, it is all around us. History is found in museums, books, on the internet, where statues and memorials lie, and just
from stories passed down from one generation to the next. History not only explains who people were, but what they did and why. History
represents America's failures, progression, and success. Through history, we learn how people fixed problems, whether it worked or not, and we can
build off of those solutions to better our future as Americans. Decision makers must use history to make factual judgements in order to succeed. Take
the Vietnam War for example, a war that America didn't win. Although it may be considered a loss, it was a lesson learned. America learned that war
doesn't solve everything, but we do know how to pick and choose our battles now. My grandpa is a Vietnam veteran, he was in the 101st airborne for
the Army. He came home from the war shamed, just as all the other veterans were. At that time people weren't accepting the failure and learning from
it, but the people of

Historical Literacy Research
Historical literacy research indicates that the kinds of texts students work with influence their reasoning process. When students read primary
documents, they are more likely to evaluate the genre and cite passages in their writing. The combination of reading multiple texts that challenge
students' preconceptions and activities such as discussion or group work also appears to encourage historical thinking. We centered our lesson on a
central question and selected relevant texts to facilitate students' investigation of the question. History is not a list of facts to be memorized, but a
series of questions to investigate. Teachers need to frame texts as interpretations to be questioned and puzzled over, not read as the authoritative final say

Today I had the opportunity to partake in a professorial development. I presented my historical summary to four educators. My audience consisted of
two kindergartener teachers, one third grade teacher, and one 10th / 11th grade reading teacher. As I opened up my presentation, I provided the
teachers with an icebreaker. The icebreaker promoted a healthy debate on the topics of reading and writing. Next, I displayed a KWL anchor chart and
guided the teachers to post what they knew about reading and writing, and what they wanted to know. Then, I presented the PowerPoint. At the end of
the presentation, an evaluation form was disturbed. On the evaluation form there were six questions. The first three were rating the effectiveness of the
presentation.
For the first question "how valuable were the ideas, information, and concepts to you?" I scored 37 points out of 40. I thought the score was effective,
especially since the majority of the teachers taught a primary grade. The second question inquired "how effective was my presentation of the

Reliable Historical Sources Essay
Reliable Historical Sources History is the study of the past, of what had really happened and who were involved. To study history itself, it is essential
that the source from which the information were taken is factual as well as reliable. It is not acceptable if it contains errors and flaws or mixing the
truth with some fictions. This essay will investigate and evaluate a piece of historical evidence, the Hollywood movie The Patriot starred by Mel
Gibson and Heath Ledger in order to determine whether or not it is reliable and could be used to determine the events that really had happened during
the American fight...show more content...
A secondary source, however, offers an easier interpretation of what was stated in a primary source. An example of a secondary source is an
encyclopedia telling about what happened during the Revolution for Independence in America. The disadvantage is that it is not one hundred percent
reliable. Since The Patriot is a secondary source, it certainly contains bias and therefore makes it quite hard for the audience to be sure of its reliability.
The Patriot was made for the sake of Hollywood and not to share what happened in the American history through a thorough and complete
documentation. Therefore, the script The Patriot itself will certainly reflects on how the scriptwriter think about the events and contains personal
opinions on the subject.
Relating to the point that had just been made, the reliability of a historical source also depend on the bias a source contained. What needs to be
questioned is whether or not this movie is biased? As seen from an audience perspective, The Patriot is a biased movie because once again, it is a
Hollywood movie with American crews and therefore they have their own ideas on how the events had occurred and why they thought they were right
in pursuing independence rather that keeping peace with the Great Britain. If seen from the British perspective, the characters on the British side might
not be that bad, especially Tavington

The History of Art
Art was the first written language and to study the history of art is to study the history of civilizations and humankind. The Paleolithic cave paintings
in France, when viewed in the modern western perspective can only be speculated at as to the intent and/or purpose of the original artisans. Perhaps the
paintings of animals were the focal point of a religious ceremony or ritual, surveyed before the hunt, to bring success or perhaps part of a celebration or
documentation after the successful hunt. It appears that art from the earliest history into the Renaissance focuses around religious ceremonies of some
type.
Plato believed art to be a form of communication on a metaphysical level. The modern western view...show more content...

Mesopotamia art was centered in what are now Iran and Iraq. The developing cultures (Assyrians, Sumerians, Babylonians, etc) in the area, between
the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, which is sometimes called the "Cradle of Civilization" or the "Fertile Crescent", are credited with the invention of
cuneiform writing which is shown to us in the Stele (law code) of Hamarabi. Within these cultures, rulers often conferred with the religious leaders and
religion was an important part of their society.
The unique character of Sumerian art is exemplified by a group of votive statues from the Abu Temple, at Tell Asmar. The identities of these statues are
unclear. However, it is an educated theory that they served Abu, God of vegetation, and they represent priests, and worshipers. There is no indication
that these figures were intended to represent a naturalistic scheme. It is important to note that the symbolization is that of the human form and
representative of some form of authoritarian hierarchy. Tracking the human form and its relationship to art, history, and culture as the human figure

Physics deals with the most fundamental concepts to understand the intricate beauties of daily life. This led me to dedicate my undergraduate studies
to Physics, in order to expand my knowledge of the field. I enjoy studying Physics and try to keep up with different findings by regularly reading
scientific publications in Physics. During my undergraduate studies, I was attracted towards small and compact, but very effective, technologies so
my brother bought me a few electronic devices to do some experiments with by taking apart the various components and figuring out how they
worked. To gain the essential knowledge behind these devices, I started reading more in depth material on how the macro and micro scale properties
of solid materials are related and their applications in the scaling down of devices.
To broaden my knowledge of crystallography, electromagnetism andquantum mechanics and to figure out the atomic–scale properties of solid
materials, I opted to pursue a specialization in Solid State Physics for my first Master's degree program from one of the well–known universities in
India, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda (MSU). After the mandatory entrance examination, I was selected as one of the 400 candidates for a

Analyzing Historical Events
Before answering the question, "should historical event be judged by the standards of their time?" we must understand what it is asking. A historical
event can be defined as an event that happened in the past but is relevant today and has influence on the present. When we judge something we form a
conclusion or opinion about it, so when we judge using the standards of another time period we are forming an opinion using the common or normal
ideas of that era. The question can be rephrased as, "should we make conclusions about past events according to the common ideas of the era in which
the event happened?" When judging historical events it is important to look at not only the context in which they occurred, but the morals and beliefs

People have a tendency to follow what is seen as popular and at the time Nazism was seen as the correct moral standard, so should we fault the Nordic
Germans for that? If we were living back in that time, would we not be a part of the majority that followed Hitler and his beliefs? Today we
believe that the morals that are common are the best set of morals that exist; we believe in cultural diversity, and the proper treatment of others no
matter our differences. However, in 100 years it is likely that our descendants will look back on us and ask how could we have let such acts like the
Syrian Civil War occur and not put a stop to them as soon as possible. Therefore, we must ask ourselves, how do social values impact the way that
events are perceived? During Hitler's regime society valued the advancement of the Nordic Germans and the disenfranchisement of anyone who was
considered other, and so they used this value as a way to justify the mistreatment of the others. In Nazi Germany, Germans believed that they were
better than those which the Nazi Party claimed as lesser, a view deemed as normal at the time, however those that still believe it today are deemed as
outrageous and wrong. When we look at the rise of Hitler, Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, most people will say that it was a heinous and

What Is Historical Testimony

  • 1. What Is Historical Testimony Introduction Perhaps, in one or the other, we all have experiences that we have gone through and they completely altered our lives. Evidently, we all have some unforgettable experiences, with some having the best and others have the worst kind of experiences. History is documented through the narration of testimonies by the victims of the experiences. Over the years, there is a lot that has happened in the world and all the occasions, there were people who were left to tell the stories. The holocaust is one of the worst events in the world that people had to endure; millions of people were killed in cold blood but there were survivors who lived to tell the story. Through their testimonies, we all get to know and connect with their experiences....show more content... Other testimonies have touch of joy and hope. Depending on the nature of the event the testimony is being narrated, emotion vary as the testimony continue to be narrated. In the book Night by Elie Wiesel, he raised some significant moral and ethical questions when he witnessed traumatic scenes such as burning alive babies, young boy being hung, people fighting against one another for food, which led to his loss of faith in god and humanity. In the video testimony of Renee, from around the 22th minute, until the one hour mark, the testimony is characterized by sad emotions but the emotions changes to joyful in the 1.37 minutes mark, when she talks about the individual who used to help the Jews. "Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, which has turned my life into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed. Never shall I forget that smoke. Never shall I forget the little faces of the children, whose bodies I saw turned into wreaths of smoke beneath a silent blue sky", (Wiesel, 1982.pg. 32) that's an example of sad emotion during a testimony. The testimony intended audience also depends on the nature of the event. In most cases, the target audience of testimonies are historians who document the events that have shaped the world in different dimensions. Any other individuals Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Essay on My Personal Reading History Personal Reading History When I was a younger I don't remember if I was read to or not, but I read a lot of books. I enjoy reading books because they allow me to reach new heights in my imagination. At my age many kids say that reading is boring and is for losers. I think it's cool to read and will continue to read throughout my life. I have read many different types of books from fiction to biographies. The longest book I ever read was a book called Dragon Rider by Cornella Funke. It was five hundred and thirty five pages! When it comes to reading I am a superstar! When I'm reading I am able to get a moral lesson from what I read, so it ends up helping me in the long run of my life I have had numerous amounts of positive...show more content... She also taught me to finish something if I started it, and that carried over to my reading. If I start reading a book I always finish it and do my best to understand it. So, she instilled what I know about reading and she influenced the way I read. She always told me, when I was younger, to pronounce my words right so that when I get older I would pronounce my words right. All that she has said to me and taught me when I was coming up as a younger child helped me get to the level of reading I am on today and also to the level of understanding I have of all the words I read. Without her encouraging me in this way I would have had problems understanding things that I read and wouldn't be as smart as I have grown to be. I am very thankful of how I was brought up as a kid. When I'm reading, it doesn't really matter where I read. When I'm reading I go into a different world and get to a place where I feel as if I'm part of the story and can relate to the main character and what he or she is going through. Also, when I'm reading I think the best place for me would be where it's quiet because I find it easier to concentrate in silence. I also read better when I'm upset because it gives me an outlet to release anger and allows me to get my work done. All throughout my life, I've had many good experiences reading. When it comes to reading, for me, good reading just comes Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Essay On Prehistory And History Prehistory literally means "before history". It is derived from the Latin word which means "before" (Prehistory Wikipedia, 2011). This was the era when there were no written records yet about the existence of the first wave of ancient humans. This was also the time when the periods were divided into subgroup system which consists of the Stone Age, Bronze Age and the Iron Age. Prehistory gave rise to the emergence of civilizations. This was also the time when the evolution of the early human beings was influenced by some inventions such as the writing system. So basically, prehistory is the time when the first set of human beings came into existence along with their discoveries and inventions. "History (from Greek бј±ПѓП„ОїПЃОЇО±, historia, meaning "inquiry, knowledge acquired by investigation")[2] is the study of the past, particularly how it relates to humans and it can also refer to the academic discipline which uses narrative to examine and analyze a sequence of past events" (History, Wikipedia, 2014). The term history was coined after Aristotle used it in one his studies called the "Inquiries about animals". However this Greek word in which the term history originated was also borrowed into Classical Latin as historia which means...show more content... Prehistory that later became a history provides us with details of how people lived to survive during those early ages when there is no technological developments yet. So these historical events and information serve as an inspiration and foundation for us to keep growing and improving as long as we preserve the ancient tradition and culture. Both the prehistory and history has been an instrument on how our cultural heritage was shaped. That is why if we have some confusions about our heritage, we always go back to how it started in the prehistoric era and what were recorded as Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. The Importance of the Study of History Essay Most universities require every student, regardless of their major, to take at least two history courses. Most students take these history courses because they are required to do so. This raises the question, why study history? What is the importance of history to a common being? History is something that has happened and is factual. By knowing these facts, its students can learn how to progress and advance not making the same mistakes. Studying history also provides a sense of respect and pride from its students towards a society. History can also help its students improve many skills needed for other fields of life. The study of history is very important to a society. History is a relevant topic for an individual and a society to...show more content... Ancient Athenians introduced the ideology of a rule by democracy. Without excessive study of the democracy of the Athenians and its effectiveness, America would not have been born. In order to inhibit any uprisings to power, such as that which occurred to the democracy of Romans, the government of United States introduced the concept of checks and balances between the branches of government. Without the leisure of learning from the fall of the Roman democracy and making adjustments to prevent that sort of happening, even the strongest democracy could have fallen. History is used as a tool of learning from the setting of the prices of market products to the decision to overthrow Saddam Hussein. Famous philosopher George Santayana once said, "A country without memory is a country of madmen" (Szasz). America is a country of tremendous nationalism and tradition. To picture the respect this nation gives to its predecessors, one just needs to examine the US flag. While the flag shows fifty stars representing the fifty states, the majority of the flag is occupied by thirteen stripes giving homage to the original thirteen colonies, upon which the nation is founded. Recognizing the struggles of the people of the past brings newfound pride and patriotism to the minds of the people. An old man lying on his deathbed usually tries to remember his life from that of early childhood to the elderly present. • 5. In late antiquity (161–565 CE) to the early middle ages the origins and development of early biographies and hagiographies were beginning to occur and transform. In this essay, I will argue how and why people wrote biographical writings by referring to the works of Augustine's Confessions, Einhard's Life of Charlemagne and the hagiography, Perpetua. First of all, it is important to remember that biographical writings at first were regarded as a mere way of writing down history. Focusing on one individual's life events, the genre didn't begin to emerge until the 18th century, hence why historians should be careful when analysing such sources (Kendall) . Early biographies from these periods tend to focus on the lives of kings, saints and other notable people. They were derived to inspire people and perhaps lead a more religious, holy life. This is since most the people who were writing these works were monks, hermits and priests using their knowledge and understanding of these people to help raise awareness of their lives. Many were paid by noble kings to write their biographies to legitimise their right to rule and to put away any criticism. Secondly, a biography is a person's life written from the perspective of another. It is typically written in third person, different from an autobiography which is written by that particular person on their own lives, written in the first person. One such biography was Einhards, Life of Charlemagne, or Vita Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. The Importance Of Historical Writing Historical writing can be done in a number of ways. Based on the approach, historical writing can be very compelling or lack usefulness. In Stono, there are four different historical approaches to writing. All pertaining to the same event, the Stono slave rebellion. In New Social History, Hoefferle approaches history in an analytic, more scientific approach. Looking at the social economic factors, and using social science methods, to understand history. Hoefferle argues that race, and gender, shaped the social history. In The Power of History, Appleby argues that historical writing, historiographical analysis, is translating. She argues that historical writers are translators to the rest of society, of what history is most relevant. In When Fish Walk on Land, Eustace argues that since 1970, social history has broken the one synthesis mold. She argues there has to be a compilation, and balance, of synthesis, fragmentation, and a narrative, in historical writing. In Conflict and the "Slave Community," Forret argues the psychological and social implications of slavery. He argues that they were put in situations that led them to violence. In interpreting the Stono slave rebellion, Forret's argument contributes the most to understanding why, when, and how. Forret's argument aids in understanding the revolt, pertaining to psychological, and societal influences. In Anatomy of a Revolt, Peter H. Wood provides a classic interpretation of the revolt. He argues that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. History : A Very Short Introduction Essay In History: A Very Short Introduction, Arnold weaves together various anecdotes including a 14th century murder, an epic regarding the corybantic slaughter of cats in France, the varying accounts of a Sojourner Truth speech, and many more stories to emphasize why history matters and the problems inherent in its recording. Throughout his novel, he contests the stance taken by Thucydides, a notable Greek historian. Thucydides lived from 460 BCE to 400 BCE and was famous for his work, The History of the Peloponnesian War, which recounted the conflict between Athens and Sparta. Thucydides firmly believed that history was meant to solely record the stories of politics, the state and great men – a belief that John Arnold throughly opposes. With his beliefs and narratives, he created a precedent that negatively influenced historiography for many years to come, for historians chose to disregard the lives and stories of the common man. It was this precedent that the historian Arnaldo Momigliano referred to as Thucydides' Tower. "Arnaldo Momigliano (a modern author) remarked that having shut himself up in this tower of political history, Thucydides wanted to confine all of us there too" (34). The idea of Thucydides' Tower itself refers to a metaphorical prison out of which historians could only see politics, war and the actions of great men; Looking out from the tower, their vision was far too narrow to see the lives and stories of the everyday man. Indeed, if Arnold wished to have a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Essay on Four Eras of Writing History has evolved over the last two centuries. In the introduction to Interpretations of American History edited by Francis G. Couvares, et al., he states that the transition of the way history was interpreted has only "linked the past more strongly to the present" (Couvares 1). Before, historians –mostly white male– used to report only about "male" topics but since then, different issues have transformed the way history used to be. Over the last 400 years, the four different stages that have reshaped the writing of American history have been the providential, the rationalist, the nationalist, and the professional. Late– nineteenth–century historians, usually called "historicists" or "positivists" believed that history was like science...show more content... Most historians during this time were wealthy and with a high position in society, hence the style of their writing. Because of the way they thought of themselves, their history explained how the "enlightened" world was a success because of men like them. According to Couvares, Jefferson's Notes on the State of Virginia very much sums up the thought of the rationalists where they were the ones who achieved greatness, it wasn't God driven. However, the rationalists were not that far off from the providential it's because their story "still pointed upward" (Couvares 6). As the nineteenth century went on, historians started to see "America as the triumph of Anglo–Saxon people over inferior races" (Couvares 6). They thought that because America had overcome other "inferior" races that they were better. Couvares explains how Bancroft organized America's history around three themes: "progress, liberty, and Anglo–Saxon destiny" (Couvares 6). This is where the third stage comes in. Their idea that the Teutonic people were supposed to spread "freedom across the globe" was the start to their sense of pride, love, and nationalism. Not only were men, but also female historians hooked on this idea. Helen Hunt Jackson wrote about white–Indian relations, which at the time was a big obstacle to jump; while at the same time anthropologists beginning to study these relationships. Around the 1870s, though, Bancroft seemed like Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. What is History? Essay What is History? The definition of history, is a question which has sparked international debate for centuries between the writers, readers, and the makers of history. In the words of acclaimed historian Edward Gibbon, "History is indeed little more than the register of the crimes, follies and misfortunes of mankind." A more romantic view on the subject was taken by Cicero. He said, "History is the witness that testifies the passing of time. It illuminates reality, vitalizes memory, provides guidance of daily life and brings us tidings of antiquity" History, described in the simplest of terms, can be seen as a record of events that have occurred in the past that the historian has taken the trouble to document. It is the...show more content... There is of course the argument, that even primary source evidence can be somewhat tainted. Propaganda by rulers and governments has been used a major tool to promote popularity amongst their people. For example, in Russia at the turn of the century writers who wrote critically about the internal affairs of government were censured, persecuted and sometimes imprisoned or executed. In 1537 to 1574, The massive censorship exercised by Cosimo I de' Medici of Florence precipitated a decline in historiography in Florence. The extreme wealth and power of the Medici family extended even further into the art of the Renaissance period and their depiction was prevalent as saintly figures in the works of these artists. Fear of persecution could drive an otherwise intelligent scholar to be biased and one sided. Even today bias and prejudice is apparent in the accounting of daily events in newspapers and television. The events revealed to the public are those which the editor or director chooses to be relevant. The Daily Telegraph for example, is widely perceived as being supportive of the Tories. In the world of films we never read 'this is a true story' in the credits but that it is 'based on a true story'. • 10. Historical Perspectives Essay Historical Perspective Essay 518 University of Phoenix December 16, 2012 Historical Perspective Essay The theory of adaption model developed over 40 years ago by nursing theorist Castilla Roy, is used in many fields of nursing especially areas of humanities and human science. Nursing theory provides the structural framework necessary for practice, and helps to further nursing knowledge providing an understanding of the scientific process, and the nurse's role in the health care setting (Colley, 2003). According to Shosha and Kaladeh (2012) Roy's model provided the nursing profession with a framework to help further model–based research with a methodological soundness not yet known to the profession. Roy developed a grand theory that the person is basically an adaptive system, considering the person holistically. Roy's grand theory lead to a separate middle–range theories broken down into four adaptive modes: physiological mode, self concept mode, role function mode, and interdependence mode (Fawcett, 2005). Roy saw the concept related to person, environment, and nursing as a central part of nursing practice. She also defines the goal of nursing as promotion of the four adaptive modes. For instance, if a person's physical and emotional needs are met, he or she is more likely experience faster healing with better outcomes. In this aspect the nurse becomes a key player in helping to promote an adaptive environment. An example of physiological modes related to adaption can be providing basic needs (i.e., rest, nutrition, oxygen, elimination). Meeting the psychosocial needs could incorporate helping a person cope by meeting their spiritual or emotional needs. Conclusion Research is important for the improvement to further the knowledge in nursing providing evidence based practice nursing theory. • 11. Reflection About History Knowing and understanding the past helps open doors to the future. As the old saying goes "history repeats itself". And if we didn't study American History, there would be no hope for the future. Without the knowledge of the past, Americans couldn't prevent the negative things from reoccuring. Our nation is stronger because superiors recognized the failures in the past and prevented them from occurring in the future. History doesn't just come from a textbook in school, it is all around us. History is found in museums, books, on the internet, where statues and memorials lie, and just from stories passed down from one generation to the next. History not only explains who people were, but what they did and why. History represents America's failures, progression, and success. Through history, we learn how people fixed problems, whether it worked or not, and we can build off of those solutions to better our future as Americans. Decision makers must use history to make factual judgements in order to succeed. Take the Vietnam War for example, a war that America didn't win. Although it may be considered a loss, it was a lesson learned. America learned that war doesn't solve everything, but we do know how to pick and choose our battles now. My grandpa is a Vietnam veteran, he was in the 101st airborne for the Army. He came home from the war shamed, just as all the other veterans were. At that time people weren't accepting the failure and learning from it, but the people of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Historical Literacy Research Historical literacy research indicates that the kinds of texts students work with influence their reasoning process. When students read primary documents, they are more likely to evaluate the genre and cite passages in their writing. The combination of reading multiple texts that challenge students' preconceptions and activities such as discussion or group work also appears to encourage historical thinking. We centered our lesson on a central question and selected relevant texts to facilitate students' investigation of the question. History is not a list of facts to be memorized, but a series of questions to investigate. Teachers need to frame texts as interpretations to be questioned and puzzled over, not read as the authoritative final say Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Historical Summary Sample Today I had the opportunity to partake in a professorial development. I presented my historical summary to four educators. My audience consisted of two kindergartener teachers, one third grade teacher, and one 10th / 11th grade reading teacher. As I opened up my presentation, I provided the teachers with an icebreaker. The icebreaker promoted a healthy debate on the topics of reading and writing. Next, I displayed a KWL anchor chart and guided the teachers to post what they knew about reading and writing, and what they wanted to know. Then, I presented the PowerPoint. At the end of the presentation, an evaluation form was disturbed. On the evaluation form there were six questions. The first three were rating the effectiveness of the presentation. For the first question "how valuable were the ideas, information, and concepts to you?" I scored 37 points out of 40. I thought the score was effective, especially since the majority of the teachers taught a primary grade. The second question inquired "how effective was my presentation of the material?" I scored 40 out of 40; I thought this score was acceptable due to the amount of time and research I...show more content... The first response question motivated the educators to express the ideas they found valuable in the presentation. Most of the teachers agreed that the timeline was beneficial, while others focused on the utilization of phonics and the lack of reading comprehension during World War 1 & 2. The next response asked the educators "how can I improve?" One teacher suggested the incorporation of multimedia examples such as videos, newspapers, and article. I concur with her suggestions, however in regards to incorporating videos; one of my slides displayed a YouTube video, so this comment threw a curve ball at me. Another educator suggested bringing in concrete objects, like books or reading and writing materials used during those eras. I thought this was a wonderful Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The definition of history, is a question which has sparked international debate for centuries between the writers, readers, and the makers of history. It is a vital topic which should be relevant in our lives because it?s important to acknowledge past events that have occurred in our world that deeply influences the present. This essay will discuss what history is, and why we study it. History is the study of past events leading up to the present day. Among other things, King Leopold II of Belgium (1835–1909), is known for the exploitation of Congo and the mass murder of its citizens as told in King Leopold?s Ghost by Adam Hochschild. King Leopold II of Belgium, created and ironically erased history by ultimately slashing the area's population by ten million during his reign in the Congo, and still managed to shrewdly foster a reputation as a great humanitarian. In telling this story, Hochschild gave detailed descriptions, especially of the individuals involved, both good and bad. Set in the palaces and boardrooms of Europe and in the villages of central Africa, it tells the story of the tragedy that took place during Leopold's so called rule. • 15. Reliable Historical Sources Essay Reliable Historical Sources History is the study of the past, of what had really happened and who were involved. To study history itself, it is essential that the source from which the information were taken is factual as well as reliable. It is not acceptable if it contains errors and flaws or mixing the truth with some fictions. This essay will investigate and evaluate a piece of historical evidence, the Hollywood movie The Patriot starred by Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger in order to determine whether or not it is reliable and could be used to determine the events that really had happened during the American fight...show more content... A secondary source, however, offers an easier interpretation of what was stated in a primary source. An example of a secondary source is an encyclopedia telling about what happened during the Revolution for Independence in America. The disadvantage is that it is not one hundred percent reliable. Since The Patriot is a secondary source, it certainly contains bias and therefore makes it quite hard for the audience to be sure of its reliability. The Patriot was made for the sake of Hollywood and not to share what happened in the American history through a thorough and complete documentation. Therefore, the script The Patriot itself will certainly reflects on how the scriptwriter think about the events and contains personal opinions on the subject. Relating to the point that had just been made, the reliability of a historical source also depend on the bias a source contained. What needs to be questioned is whether or not this movie is biased? As seen from an audience perspective, The Patriot is a biased movie because once again, it is a Hollywood movie with American crews and therefore they have their own ideas on how the events had occurred and why they thought they were right in pursuing independence rather that keeping peace with the Great Britain. If seen from the British perspective, the characters on the British side might not be that bad, especially Tavington Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The Paleolithic cave paintings in France, when viewed in the modern western perspective can only be speculated at as to the intent and/or purpose of the original artisans. Perhaps the paintings of animals were the focal point of a religious ceremony or ritual, surveyed before the hunt, to bring success or perhaps part of a celebration or documentation after the successful hunt. It appears that art from the earliest history into the Renaissance focuses around religious ceremonies of some type. Plato believed art to be a form of communication on a metaphysical level. Within these cultures, rulers often conferred with the religious leaders and religion was an important part of their society. The unique character of Sumerian art is exemplified by a group of votive statues from the Abu Temple, at Tell Asmar. The identities of these statues are unclear. However, it is an educated theory that they served Abu, God of vegetation, and they represent priests, and worshipers. There is no indication that these figures were intended to represent a naturalistic scheme. I grew up in a very small town. A town not fully developed; there were very few resources and not many quality schools to acquire a solid education. I had to pass an entrance exam to get into a good school for 8th grade at a time when most students in my town would drop out of school after 7th grade in order to search for work and support their families. My parents could not complete their undergraduate studies because they had to work to support their families, but their emphasis on the importance of education, their dedication and massive effort inspired me to search for the highest education...show more content... Physics deals with the most fundamental concepts to understand the intricate beauties of daily life. This led me to dedicate my undergraduate studies to Physics, in order to expand my knowledge of the field. I enjoy studying Physics and try to keep up with different findings by regularly reading scientific publications in Physics. During my undergraduate studies, I was attracted towards small and compact, but very effective, technologies so my brother bought me a few electronic devices to do some experiments with by taking apart the various components and figuring out how they worked. To gain the essential knowledge behind these devices, I started reading more in depth material on how the macro and micro scale properties of solid materials are related and their applications in the scaling down of devices. To broaden my knowledge of crystallography, electromagnetism andquantum mechanics and to figure out the atomic–scale properties of solid materials, I opted to pursue a specialization in Solid State Physics for my first Master's degree program from one of the well–known universities in India, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda (MSU). After the mandatory entrance examination, I was selected as one of the 400 candidates for a personal interview and was selected as one of 25 students accepted as a graduate student to the Physics Department. • 19. Analyzing Historical Events Before answering the question, "should historical event be judged by the standards of their time?" we must understand what it is asking. A historical event can be defined as an event that happened in the past but is relevant today and has influence on the present. When we judge something we form a conclusion or opinion about it, so when we judge using the standards of another time period we are forming an opinion using the common or normal ideas of that era. The question can be rephrased as, "should we make conclusions about past events according to the common ideas of the era in which the event happened?" When judging historical events it is important to look at not only the context in which they occurred, but the morals and beliefs ...show more content... People have a tendency to follow what is seen as popular and at the time Nazism was seen as the correct moral standard, so should we fault the Nordic Germans for that? If we were living back in that time, would we not be a part of the majority that followed Hitler and his beliefs? Today we believe that the morals that are common are the best set of morals that exist; we believe in cultural diversity, and the proper treatment of others no matter our differences. However, in 100 years it is likely that our descendants will look back on us and ask how could we have let such acts like the Syrian Civil War occur and not put a stop to them as soon as possible. Therefore, we must ask ourselves, how do social values impact the way that events are perceived? During Hitler's regime society valued the advancement of the Nordic Germans and the disenfranchisement of anyone who was considered other, and so they used this value as a way to justify the mistreatment of the others. In Nazi Germany, Germans believed that they were better than those which the Nazi Party claimed as lesser, a view deemed as normal at the time, however those that still believe it today are deemed as outrageous and wrong. When we look at the rise of Hitler, Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, most people will say that it was a heinous and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
