The Importance Of Peer Influence
During early childhood and well beyond, children's relations with their peers play a significant role in their overall development. Research shows that,
especially during adolescents, peer influence is a primary factor contributing to each other's rebellious behavior. The importance of wanting to fit in
within a group of peers is a stronger need than safety in some situations, resulting in risk–taking behavior. The influence of peers can occur at an early
age when children develop the ability to relate to each other. Infants six months of age develop the ability to relate to their peers through
communication by smiling, touching, and babbling. "In the second year of life, they show both prosocial and aggressive behavior with peers. Peers
began to have an influence on children during the primary school years and adolescence" (Hay, Dale). Unlike early childhood, adolescents spend more
time with and give more attention to their peers rather than their parents heightening the need to please and fit in with them. "Changes in the brain
region involved in incentive processing result in heightened sensitivity to social and emotional awards during adolescents, cognitive control systems
are not fulling matured until late adolescents" (Albert, Dustin, Laurence Steinberg). During this time adolescents have a high vulnerability to peer
influences toward risk–taking behavior. Teen's brains become hypersensitive to reward when around other teens, explaining why teens are known for

Illegal Immigration Functionalism
Illegal immigration has become a more and more commonly debated issue, there are strong opinions on both sides of the argument. Functionalism
would seem to favor illegal immigration, or at least more open borders because there are so many industries dependent upon the labor of illegal
immigrants. Since America became America society has been reliant on the work of immigrants and these immigrants, however that is not to say that
immigration has not been met with firm opposition. Although there is and always has been a large group of American citizens who are adversely
effected by and therefore strongly dislike the idea of immigrant labor, these laborers have established themselves in our society and have formed their
own social group which other

Illegal Immigration; A controversial topic. So many things have been said about the American dream; so many people have struggle against
themselves to prove that it does not only exist but can also be achieved. So many people worked hard and devoted their lives to this dream. To many
people across the world immigrating to the United States is the American dream in itself. The United States has had immigration policy in effect that
dates as far back as its birth. Immigration to the United States has been a major source of population growth and cultural change throughout much of the
history of the United States. The economic, social, and political aspects of immigration have caused controversy regarding...show more content...
Local health officials' sponsors' week–long immersion programs in Mexico in an effort to understand the immigrants who are inundating their area;
making the doctors more sympathetic to the population of illegal immigrants. In California, a 2004 study by the Federation of American Immigration
Reform put the state's annual costs at $1.4 billion. The Pew Hispanic Center estimates that 59% of the nation's illegal immigrants are uninsured
compared with 25% of legal immigrants and 14% U.S. citizens. Illegal immigrants represent 15% of the 47 million uninsured people–and about 30% of
the increase since 1980 (USAtoday).
Whereas there are many who believe illegal immigrants are one of the main reasons for this country's economic burden, there are a group of people
who believe without immigrant workers to fill the workforce, the United States economy would be worse off as some industries may be drastically
affected. According to a Gallup poll conducted on August 2009, 50 percent of Americans believe that immigration should be decreased because the
United States cannot sustain the financial burden that immigrants pose in difficult economic times (Morales). In the United States there are many jobs
that natives' workers do not want; illegal immigrants have filled these jobs due to their immigrant frame of reference. Although there are some people
may argue that this economic stability is still compromised when immigrants exploit government services, in

Faloo's Illegal
The book Illegal, may be a fiction story, but contains many real–life examples of true and famous conflicts taken place in the world. While one of the
many conflicts in the country of Zantoroland where Keita runs from, the biggest issues is the race divide between the Faloo and Kano people. The
minority, the Faloo are given more powerful jobs, and higher education. While the Kano, are very poor and live in bad conditions unlike the Faloo,
yet are the majority. The kano believe they deserve more power and that Faloo's are an abomination in their country and don't deserve what they have.
This ethnic conflict very much resembles the 1994 Rwandan genocide in which the Faloo's represent the Tutsi and the Hutus the Kano. Due to Hutu's
resembling more strong "African features" such as big noses and normal height, British rulers in charge of Rwanda, favored the Tutsi's more as they
are tall, skinny and look more European in comparison. Tutsis were given better jobs and standard of life while they were the minority, enraging the
Hutu population, who was less educated in broader terms and wanted their country to be theirs's. The long ethic divide lead to Hutus murdering their

The film, Maria full of grace and the book, Open Veins of Latin America share a plethora of similarities and differences, however, what these two
substances do is substantially support each other. Although the film is a work of fiction, the movie does an excellent job in supplementing the
information that is offered in the book which will be explained further in the essay. A major difference between the book and the film is that the film
seems to be more personal while the book is more impersonal.
To begin, the film Maria full of grace, presents a young woman, Maria who lives in a household where it is seen that her family is struggling financially
and that her family essentially relies on her and her mother for financial income. It could be inferred from the film that the family is struggling
because once Maria quit her job in the factory, her mother and sister whom who has a child are appalled at this act. As mentioned, prior you get a
more personal feel to this film in contrast from the book. This is shown through her interactions with her family, coworkers/ friends, and boyfriend.
This film touch base on how being struggling financially would lead you to perform jobs that aren't exactly legal. Once Maria quit her job at the
flower factory and her family begged her to go back, she wouldn't which fundamentally led her to become a mule in transporting pellets into the United
States for money. Maria's life is an example of those who live under this umbrella of poverty.

ABSTRACT
Peer pressure is a type of social influence that produces a particular of acting or thinking. Childhood or adolescence are the most prone to peer pressure
influence. Peers as defined are the people whom do you identify and spend time most of the time. Peer pressure by itself can be either positive or
negative, for example, both high and low academic achievements are closely linked to peer's influence. Several studies confirm research findings that
value of the peer group with whom their students spend most of their time are stronger factors in student's level of academic success or failure.

TOPIC – BARRIERS TO CRITICAL THINKING (PEER PRESSURE)
THESIS
Peer pressure is a very real issue that affects many of the teenagers of the world today. Society offers many misleading advertisements that seem to
lead teens in all the wrong directions. If the youth of today are more educated, the future of our world will be a lot better.

There are all sorts of pressures that children face today. Peer pressure is one thing that all teens have in common. Some can't escape it because it is
almost everywhere. Peer pressure is defined as the way that people of the same social group can influence on another individual to take a certain
action, adopt certain values, or otherwise conform in order to be accepted. Teens are very quick and accurate in making judgments and decisions on
their own and in situations where they have time to

How Did Maria Change In The Little White Horse
The Little White Horse By:Elizabeth Goudge
How did Maria change as a person throughout the story, and how did this change help her succeed?
Maria Merryweather is a thirteen year old girl who lived in London all her life. She was considered plain, had sliver–gray eyes, reddish hair and
freckles. "Maria was one of your true aristocrat; the perfection of the hidden things was even more important to her than the outward show. Not that
she did not like the outward show. She did. She was a very showy little thing"(Goudge,8). Maria's mother died shortly after she was born, leaving her

Negative Effects Of Peer Pressure
Even though risky behavior and peer pressure can have a variety of different meanings for people, typically, it is a relation to drugs or alcohol. Most of
the time, it seems that the most well–known types of peer pressure come from friends partaking in a substance such as drugs or alcohol and trying to
persuade someone else in the group. According to the article "Peer pressure and risk–taking behaviors in children" by Lewis and Lewis (1984), peer
pressure is a major factor in the development of risk–taking behaviors such as alcohol, drug, and tobacco use. (Lewis & Lewis, 1984) Not only are
these risk–taking behaviors prevalent throughout life, but most specifically throughout college. In their book Monitoring the future national survey
results on drug use Johnston, O'Malley, Bachman, and Schulenberg (2009), all suggest that the biggest difference between college students and their
non–college peers is largely due to the environment at college. (Johnston et al., 2009)
From the article "Negative Peer Pressure and Youth Drug Use" by Peace Dunu (2003), she states that as children grow older, their parent's influence
over them diminishes and they are more influenced by friends and that involvement with peers is a healthy part of every child's development is. She
also states that some of the troublesome aspects of peer pressure is the negative influences and the possible outcomes on adolescence such as drug
abuse, shoplifting, teen pregnancies, teen chat rooms, and alcohol abuse

Bunkering In Nigeria Essay
The Political Economy Of Illegal Bunkering In Nigeria
By
KГІmbГІ Mason Braide (PhD)
Port Harcourt, Nigeria
Demonise & Diabolise:
The Niger Delta has been a source of illicit international business deals (like the trans–Atlantic slave trade), as far back as the 15th century. Today a
new form of syndicated criminal proclivity is threatening the very foundations of Nigeria's petroleum industry, and by extension, the Nigerian economy,
as well as putting tremendous pressure on Chief (General) Olusegun Obasanjo. That problem is the "illegal bunkering" of crude oil and/or its
derivatives.
The term "bunkering", (whether legal or illegal) has been thoroughly abused, demonised, and misused in Nigerian parlance, so much so that the mere

However, the criminalisation of bunkering operations, the unstable, inadequate, and unreliable domestic refining capacity, and a miasma of
simplistically conceived national energy policies, among several other reasons, account for this unique anomaly in Nigeria. Actually, ships prefer not
to come to Nigeria and bunker because of the high port charges, related miscellaneous illegalities, called "levies", and official extortions like
mandatory but illegal "military task force approvals".
The Origins Of A Dysfunction:
Before 1973, petroleum products pricing was not uniform in Nigeria. The retail prices of petroleum products were dependent on the point of sale,
relative to the only primary distribution depot then, at the Shell–BP Refinery, Alesa Eleme, near Okrika, near Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
In October 1973, the military dictatorship of General Yakubu Gowon decreed uniform pricing of refined petroleum products for the Nigerian market.
Subsequently, the Petroleum Equalisation Fund (PEF) Decree No. 9 of 1975 was promulgated. To date, it provides for the uniform pricing of all
petroleum products throughout Nigeria, irrespective of distance from point of production. The Board of the Petroleum

Soto Gary's Growing Up
The theme of "Growing Up" by Soto Gary is to be grateful for your family and do not resent spending time with them because you will never know
what will happen and then you will loose them. At the beginning of the story, Maria did not want to go on vacation with her family because she
believed that she was too old. She was quite ungrateful that her family was taking her and her siblings on vacation. Her father had said " When I was a
kid we didn't have money for vacation. I would have been happy to go with my father." (Page 2) Maria then replied with " I know, I know. You've
said that hundred times. The tone was snappish and it felt very disrespectful, I would have been very angry if I was her father. She had also said "We

And my family goes too." (Page 2) I had expect Maria to soften and feel bad for her father who worked hard and wanted to take a break to spend
time with his family, yet she just walked away. But slowly during the time that her family left her alone she started to feel bad for arguing with her
father and that the turned into worry. "She felt bad for her mother and two brothers that would have to spend the next three hours in the car with
him. Maybe he would do something crazy , like crash the car on purpose to get back at her..." (Page 4) she then worried more and more, I believe
that she was regretting not going with them. Finally, when Maria had thought " How dare they have so much fun? While she worried herself sick
about then, they splashes in the waves, stayed at great America until nightfall, and eaten at all kinds of restaurants. They even went shopping for fall
school clothes." (Page 8) The reason why Maria is upset, I believe, is that she wanted to have fun with her family, I think she wanted to be here with
her family more than worrying about her family. She listed a bunch of very fun things and "How dare they have so much

Maria Full of Grace, written and directed by Joshua Marston, is a film portraying the Colombian drug trade. Marston being born in the U.S, includes
some international socially fragile aspects within this film. He shows the globalization of the flower and drug trade, within Colombia. Incidentally
showing the globalization of the film industry as well. As this film reaches towards a specific audience who are sentimental to the negative activities
in the global south. Marston includes an unrealistic portrayal about immigrants in America. Plus, he depicts the U.S. as a safe haven for all those who

Which, of course she accepts without much intensive thought. In this new line of work, Maria travels to America, experiencing horrors that change her
life, and new found realities that determine her future.
Marston includes globalization in several ways. The first sign of globalization in Maria Full of Grace is with the flower processing plant. Employing
75,000 Colombians, the flower industry became an economic advance for Colombia (Sorrensen 120). Creating a multi–million dollar industry,
Colombia has influenced multiple other countries to follow in their footsteps, hoping to have the same success (Sorrensen 120). Marston includes
subtle messages in the movie about this, for example, when Maria first arrives into New York, she see's a small shop on the side of the road selling
overpriced roses to the public.
The second sign of globalization is with the drug trade. Which, is odd to see the main character Maria jump from one form of globalized
employment to the next. Maria, thinking it will benefit her livelihood, becomes a narcotrafficker. Causing her to cross international borders with an
impregnated belly filled with latex pallets of heroin, choosing a terribly dangerous way to become more economically stable. Luckily, she met Lucy,
an experience narcotrafficker, who became her friend as well as her mentor, and guided her through this horrific process. Maria was later joined by
her close friend Blanca, who worked with her at the flower factory, and

Essay on Common Teenage Problems
Teenage is a fundamental stage of life that each human being passes through. Some people face this period of their life strongly and positively, while
others face many problems and difficulties. This depends on the environment these young adults live in, their parents, their friends, their living
conditions, their education, and many other factors. Teenagers face many problems such as becoming addicted to drugs and alcohol, being influenced
negatively by their peers, self–image and weight, or even arguments with their parents

Peer pressure has always been present and will also always be present. It is not a disease or a crime, it is an influence; either a negative or a positive
one. Negative peer pressure is an influence put on a person to do something wrong, or something the person doesn't want to do. This may be
stealing, taking drugs, or other dangerous actions. If someone influences you into doing something like this it is considered a negative peer
pressure. This is a major problem in most schools all around the world. Teenagers usually feel peer pressure when they feel unpopular between their
friends, or when they want to be accepted in a group of other teenagers. The group is a place where one feels accepted, where he can feel good about
himself, where he feels secure. It increases his self esteem, and it also enhances his self–image. Unfortunately, teenagers who want to be part of these
groups, need to follow certain unpleasant routines, such as stealing, smoking, taking drugs, or drinking alcohol. Many times they do things that they
would never have imagined themselves doing before meeting a new group of people. Some teens try to make the "right" decision so
others will admire them. Having parents or other responsible adults they can turn to for help or advice is crucial at this point in a teen's life.
Teenagers might also face self–image or weight problems. One of the main illnesses that comes from these

Book Analysis : The Queen Of Water
In 1996, the prosperous people in Ecuador received a total income of 50% from the nation, while the impoverished Ecuadorians received only 5%. In
the book The Queen of Water, by Laura Resau and Maria Virginia Farinango, Virginia is a teenage girl living in the 1980s in Ecuador. It depicts the
troubles Virginia has gone through to become a great student at amestizo school and how she landed a job at one of the most well–known hotels. This
explains all the hardships she faces and how she overcomes it all. The Queen of Water is based on a real girl, but she still clarifies thesocial class, the
discrimination, and the women's rights problems that people face everyday in the Ecuadorian society.
To start off, one of the dominant troubles people go through in Ecuador would be the social class. Just like in reality, appearances can tell people what
social class a person is involved with without actually telling them (Wright). Just like in The Queen of Water, Virginia is mistaken as a mestizo
teenager when she is actually an indigenous girl. If she had said what class she was in, she may have been treated differently. However, some mestizo
Ecuadorians respect the indigenous people for who they are (Resau and Farinango ). Virginia, the main girl in the book, made many friends at her
school and when they found out she was indigenous, they never stopped treating her differently; they treated her with the same respect as they had
when they first met her. Also, the Indians and women in

Washington Irving said once, "There is in every true woman's heart, a spark of heavenly fire, which lies dormant in the broad daylight of
prosperity, but which kindles up and beams and blazes in the dark hour of adversity"[1] which I feel describes the main character of Maria in the
movie Maria Full of Grace (MFG); Maria lives in Columbia and due to her financial situation becomes a drug mule for money all the while pregnant
at the age of seventeen. In the movie, Maria struggles with the rationale of staying true to herself of being good person and doing the right thing while

In the movie MFG, the audience is shown that Maria knew she was pregnant prior to becoming a drug mule, some say that this illustrates her lack of
maturity, lack of judgment and lack of responsibility by risking the health of her unborn child; however, others view it as part of her survival and
resiliency managing her personal and family issues problems first over her own well–being. In my opinion I feel that she is a little bit of both: reckless
and responsible at the same time. Reckless in the sense that she knew she was pregnant, didn't think about her own health, the idea that she may die
from doing this if he crack packet opens in her stomach or the idea of killing or harming her unborn child. On the flip side, she was thinking about
her mother working tirelessly long hours, her sister needing money for her son who was sick and her grandmothers needs and she wasn't thinking
about herself which shows she's very responsible and cares about her family situation. Like many people Maria's life is complicated with thoughts
about her family's well being first and her life and needs second. A term coined by Bacallao & Smokowski (2007) called "familism [which] involves a
deeply ingrained sense of the individual being inextricably rooted in the family. The term encompasses attitudes, behaviors, and family structures within

A Of Grace, A Film Directed By Joshua Marston
Yishan Chen April 12 2016 PUP 200 Immigration and Information Dissemination Maria Full of Grace, a movie directed by Joshua Marston, illustrated
a series of social issues, and there are two important planning issues that come to people's attention. The first one is the immigration problem and the
second is information dissemination. The dramatic increase in immigration in recent years has received a great amount of attention throughout the
world. It has profound effects in both homeland and host countries, and many factors should be taken into consideration such as social, political and
economic reasons. Moreover, information dissemination plays an important role in modern society. Efficient methods of information dissemination
increase the chances that people are exposed to a wide variety of information.Several distinct reasons can be cited to explain why people choose to
immigrate. First of all, pursuing a better living standard is widely recognized as the primary reason. Higher standards of living and better future
anticipations force people to search for a better life. Immigrants often received a low quality accommodation and residential area in their homeland.
Also, they have no opportunities to access education such as top–class universities, colleges and schools. Take an example from movie Maria Full of
Grace, in which a Colombian girl named Maria works in a flower plantation. Because she needs enough money to support her family, she quits her job
and takes a risk to

Theme Of Dead End
Dead End Identifying yourself as a person can in many cases become very complicated, this is the example of the story Dead End. The story is
about a girl who struggles with her daily problems of living in a poor Latino community without any social security, she is taking up a battle to
identify and shape herself as a person in her most vulnerable age. Maria can be said to be a character that goes through a test in life to find herself
as a person. In the beginning we get to know that she has made a promise that she wants to keep for her dead mother. She is throughout the story
being tempted to break the promise, but for the reader it reveals as a test for her to choose the right path. Maria can at the same time be referred to as
the protagonist, which means she is the center of the story, "Maria saw him, and her heart melted. Frankie Galvan was about the most handsome guy in
school." (e.g. page 2, line 10–12) "The warmth of his...show more content...
A girl was supposed to get married, raise kids, take care of her family. But you're smart, Maria. You must study and become educated."' (e.g. Page 1,
Line 30) This quote supports the idea of a theme about immigrants coming into the US. We get the sense of this because it is a bit common that
people immigrating into the US from Mexico, tend to not have any education skills themselves, because they tend to be poor people immigrating to
get a better life. Because of the lack of their educational skills, it instead makes them wanna give their kids the opportunity to go to school, and get an

One positive aspect was that the lighting was more bland and not overly saturated. I believe this gave the movie a more natural, yet depressing
tone. The movie starts out before the sun rises and as Maria rides the bus to work in the first scene the overcast sky creates a bleak atmosphere. This
coincides with the plot line and how Maria feels about working in the flower factory. On the other hand, the shaky camera proved to be distracting
for much of the film, especially the ending scene. The shot of Maria walking through the airport was supposed to represent a newfound strength and
power, but the movement of the camera distracted slightly from such an empowering scene. Overall, the director did a wonderful job on the film. It is
truly a film about redemption and finding oneself. While much of the film portrays one difficulty after another, the audience feels as though they are
on the journey with Maria. We feel as though we are traveling from Colombia, trying to figure out what to do next in New York, and finally finding the
strength to stay as Maria

Maria Full Of Grace Analysis
In today's society there is a constant pressure to fit in and be a part of something. More often than not these pressures are influenced by the lack of
family and social support surrounding an individual. Without proper support and guidance one can be persuaded to make a wrong decision and in
some cases live a lifestyle that is both risky and harmful. Knowing how to survive in these situations are not the easiest and sometimes the only way
to help the situation is keeping one's head up and attempting to make the best out of what is available. As seen in the Joshua Marston's, film Maria

Sometimes the two can go hand in hand being contributing factors of each other. Especially during adolescent years where peers encourage their
friends to attend to behavior that is not part of their normal lifestyle. For instance, trying drugs for the first time, engaging in risky sexual behavior,
and even encounters with alcohol. Even though these situations can end up being much more dangerous than intended, often times people do not
back down because of what their peers may think of them. Friends follow along not knowing if they are even capable of a task because they feel
they have a point to prove. Not to mention, there is pressures to be a part of groups like cliques and gangs, just as the local gangs in one's urban
community. According to Hallie Bourne, peer pressure is something that increases with age and begins to decline when an adolescence becomes
independent from their family or guardian (Bourne, 2015). Similar to when Maria, decided to live a life of her own in New York for her and her

The Importance Of Peer Influence

  • 1. The Importance Of Peer Influence During early childhood and well beyond, children's relations with their peers play a significant role in their overall development. Research shows that, especially during adolescents, peer influence is a primary factor contributing to each other's rebellious behavior. The importance of wanting to fit in within a group of peers is a stronger need than safety in some situations, resulting in risk–taking behavior. The influence of peers can occur at an early age when children develop the ability to relate to each other. Infants six months of age develop the ability to relate to their peers through communication by smiling, touching, and babbling. "In the second year of life, they show both prosocial and aggressive behavior with peers. Peers began to have an influence on children during the primary school years and adolescence" (Hay, Dale). Unlike early childhood, adolescents spend more time with and give more attention to their peers rather than their parents heightening the need to please and fit in with them. "Changes in the brain region involved in incentive processing result in heightened sensitivity to social and emotional awards during adolescents, cognitive control systems are not fulling matured until late adolescents" (Albert, Dustin, Laurence Steinberg). During this time adolescents have a high vulnerability to peer influences toward risk–taking behavior. Teen's brains become hypersensitive to reward when around other teens, explaining why teens are known for Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Illegal Immigration Functionalism Illegal immigration has become a more and more commonly debated issue, there are strong opinions on both sides of the argument. Functionalism would seem to favor illegal immigration, or at least more open borders because there are so many industries dependent upon the labor of illegal immigrants. Since America became America society has been reliant on the work of immigrants and these immigrants, however that is not to say that immigration has not been met with firm opposition. Although there is and always has been a large group of American citizens who are adversely effected by and therefore strongly dislike the idea of immigrant labor, these laborers have established themselves in our society and have formed their own social group which other Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Illegal Imigration Indira Krager 20 March 2012 Illegal Immigration; A controversial topic. So many things have been said about the American dream; so many people have struggle against themselves to prove that it does not only exist but can also be achieved. So many people worked hard and devoted their lives to this dream. To many people across the world immigrating to the United States is the American dream in itself. The United States has had immigration policy in effect that dates as far back as its birth. Immigration to the United States has been a major source of population growth and cultural change throughout much of the history of the United States. The economic, social, and political aspects of immigration have caused controversy regarding...show more content... Local health officials' sponsors' week–long immersion programs in Mexico in an effort to understand the immigrants who are inundating their area; making the doctors more sympathetic to the population of illegal immigrants. In California, a 2004 study by the Federation of American Immigration Reform put the state's annual costs at $1.4 billion. The Pew Hispanic Center estimates that 59% of the nation's illegal immigrants are uninsured compared with 25% of legal immigrants and 14% U.S. citizens. Illegal immigrants represent 15% of the 47 million uninsured people–and about 30% of the increase since 1980 (USAtoday). Whereas there are many who believe illegal immigrants are one of the main reasons for this country's economic burden, there are a group of people who believe without immigrant workers to fill the workforce, the United States economy would be worse off as some industries may be drastically affected. According to a Gallup poll conducted on August 2009, 50 percent of Americans believe that immigration should be decreased because the United States cannot sustain the financial burden that immigrants pose in difficult economic times (Morales). In the United States there are many jobs that natives' workers do not want; illegal immigrants have filled these jobs due to their immigrant frame of reference. Although there are some people may argue that this economic stability is still compromised when immigrants exploit government services, in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Faloo's Illegal The book Illegal, may be a fiction story, but contains many real–life examples of true and famous conflicts taken place in the world. While one of the many conflicts in the country of Zantoroland where Keita runs from, the biggest issues is the race divide between the Faloo and Kano people. The minority, the Faloo are given more powerful jobs, and higher education. While the Kano, are very poor and live in bad conditions unlike the Faloo, yet are the majority. The kano believe they deserve more power and that Faloo's are an abomination in their country and don't deserve what they have. This ethnic conflict very much resembles the 1994 Rwandan genocide in which the Faloo's represent the Tutsi and the Hutus the Kano. Due to Hutu's resembling more strong "African features" such as big noses and normal height, British rulers in charge of Rwanda, favored the Tutsi's more as they are tall, skinny and look more European in comparison. Tutsis were given better jobs and standard of life while they were the minority, enraging the Hutu population, who was less educated in broader terms and wanted their country to be theirs's. The long ethic divide lead to Hutus murdering their ...show more content... Kieta's life growing up and home life are shown as the best times of his life, even thought he was neither rich or poor, he was happy. This is a very different angle used by authors to describe a potential genocide, and war. He shows a relatively mundane family, everyone can relate the novel, not just Kieta's in. • 5. The film, Maria full of grace and the book, Open Veins of Latin America share a plethora of similarities and differences, however, what these two substances do is substantially support each other. Although the film is a work of fiction, the movie does an excellent job in supplementing the information that is offered in the book which will be explained further in the essay. A major difference between the book and the film is that the film seems to be more personal while the book is more impersonal. To begin, the film Maria full of grace, presents a young woman, Maria who lives in a household where it is seen that her family is struggling financially and that her family essentially relies on her and her mother for financial income. It could be inferred from the film that the family is struggling because once Maria quit her job in the factory, her mother and sister whom who has a child are appalled at this act. As mentioned, prior you get a more personal feel to this film in contrast from the book. This is shown through her interactions with her family, coworkers/ friends, and boyfriend. This film touch base on how being struggling financially would lead you to perform jobs that aren't exactly legal. Once Maria quit her job at the flower factory and her family begged her to go back, she wouldn't which fundamentally led her to become a mule in transporting pellets into the United States for money. Maria's life is an example of those who live under this umbrella of poverty. As Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Maria Merryweather is a thirteen year old girl who lived in London all her life. She was considered plain, had sliver–gray eyes, reddish hair and freckles. "Maria was one of your true aristocrat; the perfection of the hidden things was even more important to her than the outward show. Not that she did not like the outward show. She did. She was a very showy little thing"(Goudge,8). Maria's mother died shortly after she was born, leaving her in the care of Miss Heliotrope. • 9. Negative Effects Of Peer Pressure Even though risky behavior and peer pressure can have a variety of different meanings for people, typically, it is a relation to drugs or alcohol. Most of the time, it seems that the most well–known types of peer pressure come from friends partaking in a substance such as drugs or alcohol and trying to persuade someone else in the group. According to the article "Peer pressure and risk–taking behaviors in children" by Lewis and Lewis (1984), peer pressure is a major factor in the development of risk–taking behaviors such as alcohol, drug, and tobacco use. (Lewis & Lewis, 1984) Not only are these risk–taking behaviors prevalent throughout life, but most specifically throughout college. In their book Monitoring the future national survey results on drug use Johnston, O'Malley, Bachman, and Schulenberg (2009), all suggest that the biggest difference between college students and their non–college peers is largely due to the environment at college. (Johnston et al., 2009) From the article "Negative Peer Pressure and Youth Drug Use" by Peace Dunu (2003), she states that as children grow older, their parent's influence over them diminishes and they are more influenced by friends and that involvement with peers is a healthy part of every child's development is. She also states that some of the troublesome aspects of peer pressure is the negative influences and the possible outcomes on adolescence such as drug abuse, shoplifting, teen pregnancies, teen chat rooms, and alcohol abuse Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Bunkering In Nigeria Essay The Political Economy Of Illegal Bunkering In Nigeria By KГІmbГІ Mason Braide (PhD) Port Harcourt, Nigeria Demonise & Diabolise: The Niger Delta has been a source of illicit international business deals (like the trans–Atlantic slave trade), as far back as the 15th century. Today a new form of syndicated criminal proclivity is threatening the very foundations of Nigeria's petroleum industry, and by extension, the Nigerian economy, as well as putting tremendous pressure on Chief (General) Olusegun Obasanjo. That problem is the "illegal bunkering" of crude oil and/or its derivatives. The term "bunkering", (whether legal or illegal) has been thoroughly abused, demonised, and misused in Nigerian parlance, so much so that the mere ...show more content... However, the criminalisation of bunkering operations, the unstable, inadequate, and unreliable domestic refining capacity, and a miasma of simplistically conceived national energy policies, among several other reasons, account for this unique anomaly in Nigeria. Actually, ships prefer not to come to Nigeria and bunker because of the high port charges, related miscellaneous illegalities, called "levies", and official extortions like mandatory but illegal "military task force approvals". The Origins Of A Dysfunction: Before 1973, petroleum products pricing was not uniform in Nigeria. The retail prices of petroleum products were dependent on the point of sale, relative to the only primary distribution depot then, at the Shell–BP Refinery, Alesa Eleme, near Okrika, near Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
  • 11. In October 1973, the military dictatorship of General Yakubu Gowon decreed uniform pricing of refined petroleum products for the Nigerian market. Subsequently, the Petroleum Equalisation Fund (PEF) Decree No. 9 of 1975 was promulgated. To date, it provides for the uniform pricing of all petroleum products throughout Nigeria, irrespective of distance from point of production. Soto Gary's Growing Up The theme of "Growing Up" by Soto Gary is to be grateful for your family and do not resent spending time with them because you will never know what will happen and then you will loose them. At the beginning of the story, Maria did not want to go on vacation with her family because she believed that she was too old. She was quite ungrateful that her family was taking her and her siblings on vacation. Her father had said " When I was a kid we didn't have money for vacation. I would have been happy to go with my father." (Page 2) Maria then replied with " I know, I know. You've said that hundred times. The tone was snappish and it felt very disrespectful, I would have been very angry if I was her father. She had also said "We never do anything, it's...show more content... And my family goes too." (Page 2) I had expect Maria to soften and feel bad for her father who worked hard and wanted to take a break to spend time with his family, yet she just walked away. But slowly during the time that her family left her alone she started to feel bad for arguing with her father and that the turned into worry. "She felt bad for her mother and two brothers that would have to spend the next three hours in the car with him. Maybe he would do something crazy , like crash the car on purpose to get back at her..." (Page 4) she then worried more and more, I believe that she was regretting not going with them. Finally, when Maria had thought " How dare they have so much fun? While she worried herself sick about then, they splashes in the waves, stayed at great America until nightfall, and eaten at all kinds of restaurants. They even went shopping for fall school clothes." (Page 8) The reason why Maria is upset, I believe, is that she wanted to have fun with her family, I think she wanted to be here with her family more than worrying about her family. She listed a bunch of very fun things and "How dare they have so much Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Marston being born in the U.S, includes some international socially fragile aspects within this film. He shows the globalization of the flower and drug trade, within Colombia. In this new line of work, Maria travels to America, experiencing horrors that change her life, and new found realities that determine her future. Marston includes globalization in several ways. The first sign of globalization in Maria Full of Grace is with the flower processing plant. Employing 75,000 Colombians, the flower industry became an economic advance for Colombia (Sorrensen 120). Creating a multi–million dollar industry, Colombia has influenced multiple other countries to follow in their footsteps, hoping to have the same success (Sorrensen 120). Marston includes subtle messages in the movie about this, for example, when Maria first arrives into New York, she see's a small shop on the side of the road selling overpriced roses to the public. The second sign of globalization is with the drug trade. Which, is odd to see the main character Maria jump from one form of globalized employment to the next. Maria, thinking it will benefit her livelihood, becomes a narcotrafficker. Causing her to cross international borders with an impregnated belly filled with latex pallets of heroin, choosing a terribly dangerous way to become more economically stable. Luckily, she met Lucy, an experience narcotrafficker, who became her friend as well as her mentor, and guided her through this horrific process. Some people face this period of their life strongly and positively, while others face many problems and difficulties. This depends on the environment these young adults live in, their parents, their friends, their living conditions, their education, and many other factors. Teenagers face many problems such as becoming addicted to drugs and alcohol, being influenced negatively by their peers, self–image and weight, or even arguments with their parents Drugs between teenagers is one of the most serious problems, because it causes a change in the behavior of any teenager and a physical change too. Most of the teenagers use alcoholic drinks as a way to escape...show more content... Peer pressure has always been present and will also always be present. It is not a disease or a crime, it is an influence; either a negative or a positive one. Negative peer pressure is an influence put on a person to do something wrong, or something the person doesn't want to do. This may be stealing, taking drugs, or other dangerous actions. If someone influences you into doing something like this it is considered a negative peer pressure. This is a major problem in most schools all around the world. Teenagers usually feel peer pressure when they feel unpopular between their friends, or when they want to be accepted in a group of other teenagers. The group is a place where one feels accepted, where he can feel good about himself, where he feels secure. It increases his self esteem, and it also enhances his self–image. Unfortunately, teenagers who want to be part of these groups, need to follow certain unpleasant routines, such as stealing, smoking, taking drugs, or drinking alcohol. Many times they do things that they would never have imagined themselves doing before meeting a new group of people. Some teens try to make the "right" decision so others will admire them. Having parents or other responsible adults they can turn to for help or advice is crucial at this point in a teen's life. Teenagers might also face self–image or weight problems. One of the main illnesses that comes from these Get more content on HelpWriting.net

In the book The Queen of Water, by Laura Resau and Maria Virginia Farinango, Virginia is a teenage girl living in the 1980s in Ecuador. It depicts the troubles Virginia has gone through to become a great student at amestizo school and how she landed a job at one of the most well–known hotels. This explains all the hardships she faces and how she overcomes it all. The Queen of Water is based on a real girl, but she still clarifies thesocial class, the discrimination, and the women's rights problems that people face everyday in the Ecuadorian society. To start off, one of the dominant troubles people go through in Ecuador would be the social class. Just like in reality, appearances can tell people what social class a person is involved with without actually telling them (Wright). Just like in The Queen of Water, Virginia is mistaken as a mestizo teenager when she is actually an indigenous girl. If she had said what class she was in, she may have been treated differently. However, some mestizo Ecuadorians respect the indigenous people for who they are (Resau and Farinango ). Virginia, the main girl in the book, made many friends at her school and when they found out she was indigenous, they never stopped treating her differently; they treated her with the same respect as they had when they first met her. Maria Full of Gave-Reflection Paper on Movie Reflection Paper: Maria Full of Grace Washington Irving said once, "There is in every true woman's heart, a spark of heavenly fire, which lies dormant in the broad daylight of prosperity, but which kindles up and beams and blazes in the dark hour of adversity"[1] which I feel describes the main character of Maria in the movie Maria Full of Grace (MFG); Maria lives in Columbia and due to her financial situation becomes a drug mule for money all the while pregnant at the age of seventeen. In the movie, Maria struggles with the rationale of staying true to herself of being good person and doing the right thing while still wanting to make money for her strains to survive day to day. Maria also fights with the notion of wanting a better life...show more content... In the movie MFG, the audience is shown that Maria knew she was pregnant prior to becoming a drug mule, some say that this illustrates her lack of maturity, lack of judgment and lack of responsibility by risking the health of her unborn child; however, others view it as part of her survival and resiliency managing her personal and family issues problems first over her own well–being. In my opinion I feel that she is a little bit of both: reckless and responsible at the same time. Reckless in the sense that she knew she was pregnant, didn't think about her own health, the idea that she may die from doing this if he crack packet opens in her stomach or the idea of killing or harming her unborn child. On the flip side, she was thinking about her mother working tirelessly long hours, her sister needing money for her son who was sick and her grandmothers needs and she wasn't thinking about herself which shows she's very responsible and cares about her family situation. Like many people Maria's life is complicated with thoughts about her family's well being first and her life and needs second. A term coined by Bacallao & Smokowski (2007) called "familism [which] involves a deeply ingrained sense of the individual being inextricably rooted in the family. • 18. A Of Grace, A Film Directed By Joshua Marston Yishan Chen April 12 2016 PUP 200 Immigration and Information Dissemination Maria Full of Grace, a movie directed by Joshua Marston, illustrated a series of social issues, and there are two important planning issues that come to people's attention. The first one is the immigration problem and the second is information dissemination. The dramatic increase in immigration in recent years has received a great amount of attention throughout the world. It has profound effects in both homeland and host countries, and many factors should be taken into consideration such as social, political and economic reasons. Moreover, information dissemination plays an important role in modern society. Efficient methods of information dissemination increase the chances that people are exposed to a wide variety of information.Several distinct reasons can be cited to explain why people choose to immigrate. First of all, pursuing a better living standard is widely recognized as the primary reason. Higher standards of living and better future anticipations force people to search for a better life. Immigrants often received a low quality accommodation and residential area in their homeland. Also, they have no opportunities to access education such as top–class universities, colleges and schools. Take an example from movie Maria Full of Grace, in which a Colombian girl named Maria works in a flower plantation. Because she needs enough money to support her family, she quits her job and takes a risk to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Theme Of Dead End Dead End Identifying yourself as a person can in many cases become very complicated, this is the example of the story Dead End. The story is about a girl who struggles with her daily problems of living in a poor Latino community without any social security, she is taking up a battle to identify and shape herself as a person in her most vulnerable age. Maria can be said to be a character that goes through a test in life to find herself as a person. In the beginning we get to know that she has made a promise that she wants to keep for her dead mother. She is throughout the story being tempted to break the promise, but for the reader it reveals as a test for her to choose the right path. Maria can at the same time be referred to as the protagonist, which means she is the center of the story, "Maria saw him, and her heart melted. Frankie Galvan was about the most handsome guy in school." (e.g. page 2, line 10–12) "The warmth of his...show more content... A girl was supposed to get married, raise kids, take care of her family. But you're smart, Maria. You must study and become educated."' (e.g. Page 1, Line 30) This quote supports the idea of a theme about immigrants coming into the US. We get the sense of this because it is a bit common that people immigrating into the US from Mexico, tend to not have any education skills themselves, because they tend to be poor people immigrating to get a better life. Because of the lack of their educational skills, it instead makes them wanna give their kids the opportunity to go to school, and get an education. In a poor Latino environment, like the one Maria lives in, it makes it hard for her to accrue the social mobility, which instead makes it harder for her to climb to higher social Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Maria Full Of Grace The 2004 film, Maria Full of Grace, by director Joshua Marston is a beautiful and real depiction of the struggles of poor workers and the extent people must go to simply to survive. The story follows seventeen year old Maria Alvarez trying to survive in her native Colombia. After quitting her job at a flower plantation and finding out that she is pregnant, Maria goes in search of a job to try and help support her mother, grandmother, sister, and nephew. She becomes a mule, transporting drugs to America. One positive aspect was that the lighting was more bland and not overly saturated. I believe this gave the movie a more natural, yet depressing tone. The movie starts out before the sun rises and as Maria rides the bus to work in the first scene the overcast sky creates a bleak atmosphere. This coincides with the plot line and how Maria feels about working in the flower factory. On the other hand, the shaky camera proved to be distracting for much of the film, especially the ending scene. The shot of Maria walking through the airport was supposed to represent a newfound strength and power, but the movement of the camera distracted slightly from such an empowering scene. Overall, the director did a wonderful job on the film. It is truly a film about redemption and finding oneself. While much of the film portrays one difficulty after another, the audience feels as though they are on the journey with Maria. We feel as though we are traveling from Colombia, trying to figure out what to do next in New York, and finally finding the strength to stay as Maria Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 21. Maria Full Of Grace Analysis In today's society there is a constant pressure to fit in and be a part of something. More often than not these pressures are influenced by the lack of family and social support surrounding an individual. Without proper support and guidance one can be persuaded to make a wrong decision and in some cases live a lifestyle that is both risky and harmful. Knowing how to survive in these situations are not the easiest and sometimes the only way to help the situation is keeping one's head up and attempting to make the best out of what is available. As seen in the Joshua Marston's, film Maria Full of Grace, where the main character Maria does what she feels is best for both her current struggling lifestyle and what she wants her future life to consist of. Especially during adolescent years where peers encourage their friends to attend to behavior that is not part of their normal lifestyle. For instance, trying drugs for the first time, engaging in risky sexual behavior, and even encounters with alcohol. Even though these situations can end up being much more dangerous than intended, often times people do not back down because of what their peers may think of them. Friends follow along not knowing if they are even capable of a task because they feel they have a point to prove. Not to mention, there is pressures to be a part of groups like cliques and gangs, just as the local gangs in one's urban community. According to Hallie Bourne, peer pressure is something that increases with age and begins to decline when an adolescence becomes independent from their family or guardian (Bourne, 2015). Similar to when Maria, decided to live a life of her own in New York for her and her unborn baby and become independent of her family back in Columbia where nothing was going Get more content on HelpWriting.net
