UHY HACKER YOUNG HITS THE TOP 15
The UHY Hacker Young Group has reached
position 15 in the latest UK accountancy
league tables. With a fee income now in
excess of £52m, over 500 professional staff
and more than 100 partners, the Group has
grown from strength to strength to reach
this notable position.
NEW PARTNERS
We are pleased to announce a number of
recent partner appointments across the
Group, enhancing our expertise across a
range of disciplines:
LONDON:
Daniel Hutson has been
promoted to partner. He
joined our London office
in December 2011 having
previously worked for over
eight years at another City
firm. Daniel heads the London office
financial services team and has a wealth
of experience in auditing both listed and
private companies across a range of sectors
including natural resources, financial
services, shipping, property and the general
corporate market. He has also assisted
many companies with their admission
to the London Stock Exchange through
the IPO process and undertaken financial
due diligence projects in both the UK and
overseas.
LETCHWORTH:
Graham Boar has been with
our Letchworth office for
over a decade, and in 2015
he joined the firm’s board
of directors. He joined our
Letchworth office as a
graduate in 2003 and qualified as a
Chartered Accountant in 2006, before
transitioning from general practice into tax
soon after. In 2012 Graham qualified for,
and became a full member of, the Society
of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and
is now responsible for ensuring that the tax
obligations of the firms’ private clients are
met.
GLASGOW:
Graham Cunning has been
appointed as a corporate
finance partner. Graham,
who previously worked in two
of the Big Four firms as well
as holding senior positions in
Helping you prosper
banking, has acted as a consultant for our
Glasgow office for the past two years.
He will use his skills and experience in
M&A, strategy, private equity and banking
to provide corporate finance advice to
companies and shareholders, as well as
continue to develop relationships for the firm
with corporate targets.
Murdoch MacLennan has
joined as a partner responsible
for driving the firm’s business
development across the
owner managed business
market in Scotland.
Murdoch has had a very successful career
in banking, and is a well-known face in the
business community in Central Scotland.
In his time at Clydesdale Bank, Murdoch
developed an extensive, sector diverse
knowledge base. He has an established
track record of delivering commercially
focused business solutions to clients.
Craig Coyle has been
promoted from director to
tax partner. He has provided
tax consulting advice to
companies and their
shareholders for over fifteen
years, with clients ranging from owner
managed businesses to large multinational
groups. Craig has particular experience
of providing tax support for transactions,
dealing with international matters and
regularly works with clients on the
restructuring of corporate groups in order
to optimise the tax efficiency of structures,
including advice on demergers and
Entrepreneurs’ Relief for shareholders.
RETIREES
YORK:
Julia Judson-Smith and Keith Ward, both
partners at our York firm UHY Calvert Smith,
retired in March of this year. Both were long
serving members and had spent a combined
total of over 50 years at the firm.
Julia joined in 1997 from
Price Waterhouse Coopers in
Newcastle as a tax manager
before becoming a partner
and then managing partner
12 years ago. During this
time, Julia’s expertise in taxation led to the
firm’s expansion into the trusts and landed
estates sector which resulted in many long
standing trust and estate clients for whom
Julia played a key role.
Keith also had many long
term business relationships,
having joined UHY Calvert
Smith in 1982 and becoming
partner in 1984. His
specialisms were within small
and medium sized entities and he won
the West Yorkshire Society of Chartered
Accountants ‘Everybody Counts’ award in
2003, in recognition of his work for local
sports charities.
A buffet and drinks reception was held in
March at The Merchant Taylors Hall in York
to give clients and staff the opportunity to
say goodbye and wish Keith and Julia a very
happy retirement!
MANCHESTER:
Eddie Stanton, a tax
partner in our Manchester
office, retired in January.
Reminiscing about the early
days of his career, Eddie said
“I joined the Inland Revenue
at the age of 16 in the Summer of 1965,
when the Hollies were top of the charts with
‘I’m Alive!’ Corporation tax and Capital
Gains Tax had both been introduced in April
that year.” Looking forward, he admits
that “although the prospect of retirement
was pretty scary initially, I am now looking
forward to golf, cooking, walking, learning
to play a musical instrument and, best of all,
spending more time being a grandad.”
The UHY Hacker
Young Group reached
position 15 in the
latest UK league
tables, with a fee
income now in excess
of £52m.

CELEBRATING 90 YEARS
Helping you prosper
This year our London and Nottingham
firm are celebrating the 90th
anniversary
of UHY Hacker Young, having developed
from its modest beginnings into today’s
thriving Top 15 UK accountancy network
with a global presence through UHY
International.
Our last anniversary celebrations were
in 2000, when UHY Hacker Young - or
Hacker Young as it was then - turned 75
years. In the subsequent fifteen years, we
have witnessed significant growth and
development within UHY; across our London
and Nottingham firm, within the UK Group
and throughout our global network.
In May we marked the official celebrations
with a drinks reception, attended by over
240 guests, in the elegant surroundings of
the Wallace Collection in London. Ladislav
Hornan, London managing partner,
welcomed guests and acknowledged how
far the UHY UK Group has come since the
founding of the London office by Jonny
Rubens and Mark Hacker back in 1925.
During his speech, Ladislav recognised that
“while we have achieved much in these last
fifteen years, our appetite is for more growth
and evolution.”
The occasion was then marked by the
unveiling of a specially commissioned piece
of artwork by the street artist ‘Pure Evil’
which now resides in our London office
reception alongside another Pure Evil piece
‘New logo for the Hackney Looting Team’.
The latter piece was made famous during the
London Olympics when Pure Evil graffitied
the art on a wall at Broadway Market in East
London.
The specially commissioned artwork is
also included on the cover of our new
publication, UHY in 2015: Celebrating 90
years, which is available to download via our
website. The publication provides a profile
of the firm today as well as highlighting
significant achievements since our 75th
anniversary – we hope you enjoy the read!
Our London office tax investigations
team had a pretty successful evening at
Taxation Magazine’s National Taxation
Awards 2015, when they returned with
not one but two awards! The team won
the Tax Team in a National Firm category
and also the Tax Investigations Team
category at the awards.
The tax investigations team is led by Michael
Avient who joined the firm in 2013, bringing
22 years of experience in investigation
and litigation work. His team was further
augmented by the appointment of Heather
Williams, who is listed in Tax Journal’s 40
under 40 compilation for 2015.
The team have been at the forefront of the
current evolving tax environment, resolving
complex issues faced by High Net Worth
Individuals subject to investigation as well as
challenging the issue of Accelerated Payment
Notices and the legality of the relevant
legislation. You can read more about the
team and their work on our website.
The national awards recognise the best in the
taxation industry, celebrating excellence and
promoting the highest standards possible.
We are delighted that the team has been
recognised for their significant technical
knowledge and hard work.

This bulletin is updated quarterly and the

LDF SET TO CLOSE ON 31 DECEMBER
2015
With HMRC entering into a long succession
of information exchange agreements, the
chances of the tax man finding out about
offshore assets - whether in Liechtenstein,
Switzerland or anywhere else - is now
extremely high. If you have undeclared
UK tax liabilities you have two choices: to
wait until your turn comes or to get in first
with a disclosure of relevant income and
gains. If you are going to disclose, it usually
makes sense to take advantage of the
very generous terms of the Liechtenstein
Disclosure Facility (LDF).
Despite the name, the LDF is open to
almost anyone with undeclared tax liabilities
associated with any offshore assets.
However, time is running out to use the
facility, which is due to close at the end of
2015 ‘in advance of a new disclosure facility’.
It is understood that the new facility will be
time limited and on less generous terms, but
full detail will be unveiled soon.
For information on the LDF and in order
to understand whether or not this is the
best course of disclosure for you, please
download our factsheet from our website.

economy; to the higher wage, lower welfare
country we intend to create.”
As with all Budget announcements, we

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
We recently caught up with some of our alumni to find out what they are doing now
and how their time at UHY Hacker Young helped them get to where they are.
PAUL SHERMAN
Paul joined our London office
in 1983 as an audit junior, in
the days of senior partners
Stuart Young and Arthur
Harvard. His career began at 19 years old,
after a one year accounting diploma at City
of London Poly. As the youngest of 13
new recruits, Paul qualified as a Chartered
Accountant when he was 21 years old.
Of his time at Hacker Young (in the days
before we added UHY to our name), Paul
says “I learned from seniors like Sammy
Elijah, David Marks, Dave Hoskins, Paul
Tuhrim, Michael Needleman, Charlie Moore
and Nigel Gamble. I worked on clients such
as Windsmoor, Carlton Communications
and Tangent, in vastly different industries
and spent my last year working on
acquisitions and stock exchange flotations.
My experience was more varied and the
responsibility given to me was invaluable.
Whenever I attended training, I found that
my experience was far broader than those
attending from the big eight firms. I worked
for several partners, but mostly for Howard
Spencer, who I admired and respected
immensely. I am fortunate that we have
remained in touch for the 28 years since I left
the firm in 1987.”
For the past five years, Paul has been Chief
Financial Officer at ABB Optical Group, based
in South Florida in the United States. ABB
supplies 30,000 eye doctors, retail stores,
hospitals and universities, with brand name
contact lenses and other optical products.
The company’s revenue exceeds $1 billion
and has grown rapidly through acquisitions
and organic growth, at levels above the
industry’s growth.
After his time at UHY, Paul became assistant
controller at Charterhall PLC, an acquisitive
public company with operating businesses
in various industries. In 1989, he emigrated
to the U.S. and initially joined a corporate
finance consultancy. Paul then went on
to join Burger King Corporation, which is
headquartered in Miami and at the time was
owned by Grand Metropolitan PLC, which
then merged with Guinness to form Diageo
PLC. In his ten years there, Paul served
in nine roles of increasing responsibility,
including CFO for the company-owned
restaurants and Vice President, Operations
Excellence. Paul later spent seven years at
LNR Property Corporation, a multi-million
dollar real estate business that invests in
commercial mortgage loans, commercial
mortgage backed securities and complex
financial instruments.
Paul says “I have always been appreciative
of my foundation at Hacker Young, which
taught me never to be out-worked, the
importance of having fun and set the tone
for applying my skill sets in varying industries.
As a result of my own foundation, I have
always placed greater importance on a
person’s attitude, infectious enthusiasm and
willingness to work hard and learn, than
on their degrees and qualifications or the
university they attended. Hacker Young
showed me that success is only generated by
giving well-deserving people responsibility,
opportunity and exposure, focusing on their
growth, challenging them to raise the bar,
celebrating their successes and rewarding
them.
Most memorable about my experience at
Hacker Young was the camaraderie with my
fellow recruits, as well as with people junior
and senior to me. I enjoyed working at
clients, but cherished the days in the office
after we hadn’t seen each other for weeks.
I was, and have always been, proud to tell
people that I began my career at Hacker
Young.“

Robert says “my time at UHY has been of
huge benefit to me. The exposure to many
different industries has helped me gain the
experience required in my current role.
I use this experience to develop and
strengthen the audit and compliance
function at the ESC and I am often referred
to for audit advice and compliance matters
because of the experience I have gained.
My most memorable time at UHY was, of
course, my secondment to the Melbourne
office in Australia. It was such a great
experience, I felt a great deal of achievement
to be able to audit for a fellow UHY
network member on the other side of the
world. Another memorable experience was
generally my time in the Nottingham office,
I do miss the partners and the staff there, so
much so that when I was last in the UK in
July 2014, I popped in to say hello!”
ROBERT GRAY
Robert joined our Nottingham
office as an audit senior at
the end of 2005, having
completed his ACCA exams
with a medium-sized firm of chartered
accountants in Leicester. Following
qualification, he took the decision to join
UHY to increase his exposure to varied audit
and accounting assignments.
Having been promoted to audit supervisor
in 2007, by July 2008 Robert managed to
negotiate a three month secondment with
UHY Haines Norton Chartered Accountants
in Melbourne, Australia. Robert says: “This
was a fantastic experience, made possible
by working with understanding bosses and
within the global accountancy network
of UHY. The partners at the Melbourne
office provided me with an unforgettable
experience and plenty of work due to the
fact that July to September is their end of
financial year busy season. Everyone at the
Nottingham office assumed I was going to
relax on the beach!”
After five and a half years in Nottingham,
Robert took a permanent role as audit
supervisor with UHY Haines Norton. Here
he continued to gain much exposure
to a wide range of private companies,
industries, financial institutions, not for profit
organisations and a large amount of auditing
on behalf of the Victorian State Government,
including the whole of the Greyhound and
Harness Racing industry in Victoria.
After two years at UHY Haines Norton,
Robert moved to the Essential Services
Commission (ESC), the state of Victoria’s
independent economic regulator of the
electricity, gas, water and sewerage, ports
and rail freight industries. The ESC also
administer an Energy Saver Initiative,
designed to make energy efficiency
improvements more affordable for homes
and businesses. So far Robert has held
two roles within the audit and compliance
team at the ESC, one role within the Energy
division, which works with the energy
retailers and distributors, and another role
within the Energy Saver scheme.

LONDON TO PARIS
We recently heard from Paul Rosen, who
worked at our London office as an audit
manager before joining a client as finance
director in 1992. Paul’s time at UHY
included a year working for UHY in
New York, in what was one of the first
international staff secondments ever
undertaken by the UHY Group.
Now CEO at MPL Home Ltd, a houseware
company specialising in the design, sourcing,
import and distribution of home related
products, Paul is still in contact with former
Group Chairman and London audit partner,
Howard Spencer. Paul got in touch recently
to let Howard know about the London to
Paris bike ride that he took part in. The
ride is an amazing charity challenge starting
from the UK’s capital, through the English
countryside over to rural France and on to
the heart of Paris, finishing under the Eiffel
Tower.
Having swapped a few emails, David
promised to catch up with Gilbert on his next
trip to Hong Kong.
Despite not expecting to arrive at his hotel
until 10.30pm following a ten hour trip
from Dubai, after landing David rang Gilbert
who was still in his office (which happened
to only be a two minute walk away from
David’s hotel). The two contemporaries met
up and kept the bar open till past 2am as
they reminisced and recounted stories of
their time at UHY!
Paul finished the 512km ride after 22
hours and 40 minutes in the saddle, having
achieved an average speed of 22.5km
an hour with a total climb of 4500m.
We would like to congratulate Paul on

SECTOR SPOTLIGHT: LAUNCHING A NEW
ATTACK ON THE AUTOMOTIVE SECTOR
THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND OUR
AUTOMOTIVE OFFERING
David started his career
14 years ago in a boutique
accountancy firm, specialising
in the automotive sector.
He successfully joined the
management team after a short period
and delivered significant growth, including
setting up a corporate finance department
early on. Since then he has gained his
Corporate Finance (CF) qualification and
achieved partner status in 2012. In early
2014, David joined UHY Hacker Young as a
partner in our Manchester office to drive the
business forward and is currently working on
a large number of corporate engagements,
having completed six deals this year already
with numerous close to fruition.
David has acted as a trusted adviser for
numerous privately owned businesses, and
taken a lead advisory role on in excess of 100
transactions with estimated combined value
of circa £350m. With significant experience
in the automotive sector, he is known as one
of the leading professional advisers in the
marketplace and has an extensive network
of contacts in the industry. His enthusiasm,
energy and drive have made a significant
impact in the UHY Group already over the
past 18 months.
Outside of work he enjoys many sports
including football and golf, as well as being
Chairman of Lindow Cricket Club where he
has played for over 18 years. His objective
is to develop local cricket at both junior and
senior levels, as well as ensuring the club’s
long term future through a solid financial
cash position. He is regularly involved in
fundraising events to help support the club

Our UK Group has, for many years,
promoted our national capability within
the motor trade and transport sector.
Our client base has ranged from small
garage owners and car hire companies to
large independent franchise dealerships
and owner managed haulage and
storage companies. A bout of new
partner appointments last year within
our Manchester office, however, has
added a whole new dimension to our
coverage of the sector and with it a new
national sector group for UHY.
The three new partner appointments cover
audit, tax and corporate finance. Their
offering is further complemented by the
recent appointment of an ex motor retailer
to the team and, between them, they
have over 50 years’ experience within the
automotive sector.
They are well regarded as specialists in this
sector, having worked with most ‘household
name’ franchised dealer groups in the
UK. In addition to providing traditional
audit and tax services, their experience
also covers more industry-specific financial
and operation consultancy projects
(including Internal Business Reviews ‘IBRs’,
profit optimisation and new market entry
assignments) across the UK and Europe on
behalf of institutional lenders and Original
Equipment Manufacturers.
All three partners joined the Manchester
office from a specialist automotive
accounting firm and are focusing their
combined efforts on national dealer
networks. The partners are supported by
UHY’s national automotive team, to ensure
we are able to combine a local responsive
service with deep and wide ranging
automotive skills and experience.
Mike Wasinski, Manchester office managing
partner, said:
“These appointments take us firmly into the
sector, packing a real punch against our main
sector competitors. We have already held
more than 50 meetings with prospective
clients within the sector and have many
more in our sights.”
To read more about the team’s experience
and the specialist services we provide
to the automotive sector, please see the
automotive section on our website.

UHY 101 DOGGY PADDLERS WIN THE
2015 DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL
The 2015 Dragon Boat Festival, held in May
at Brindley Place in Birmingham, involved
20 teams competing in a series of heats
in traditional Chinese longboats along the
Birmingham Canal Old Main Line.
The teams that took part were assigned a
specific year for fancy dress between 1995
and 2015 to celebrate Brindley Place’s 20th
anniversary with the aim of raising £100,000
for a local charity, Cure Leukaemia.
UHY were allocated the year 1996 and
decided on 101 Dalmations as the theme,
going by the name ‘UHY 101 Doggy
Paddlers’. The team won all five races,
beating the sponsors Deutsche Bank
in the final (who were dressed as the
118 telephone operating men!). Our
Birmingham team raised over £2,000 for
Cure Leukaemia.
THE BEN NEVIS CHALLENGE IN AID OF
TOM’S TRUST
On 12 September 2015, colleagues from our
Letchworth, Royston and Cambridge offices
and their sister companies, Virtual Business
Source and Provisio, will be taking on the
Ben Nevis Challenge!
The challenge includes trekking to the
summit of the tallest peak in the British
Isles, cycling 25 miles through the beautiful
Scottish highlands and canoeing a 3km
course on a loch in one day.
The three teams are fundraising for Tom’s
Trust, a charity that was set up by Provisio’s
managing director and his family after his
son, Tom, passed away from a brain tumour
aged nine.
In partnership with Addenbrooke’s Hospital
and two other charities, Tom’s Trust has
funded and launched “Brainbow” – the
UK’s first rehabilitation service dedicated
to children with brain tumours. Tom’s Trust
is currently raising funds to expand and
continue this service so that all affected
children in the East Anglia region can be
given the best chance to achieve their true
potential.
It goes without saying that all donations
no matter how small will help make these
children’s lives better and go a long way to
helping them in their recovery from this life-
changing disease.
If you would like to make a donation and
contribute to their efforts to raise over
£6,000 for this fantastic charity, please
