3. Agenda
• Registration at Durham – a history
• Baseline Banner Functionality
• The Timetable Link
• Self Service Integration
• Reactions and Feedback from Users

6. Registration at Durham
So we had:
• Good quality timetable data
• Online selection of modules
But also:
• Student level timetables not 100%
• Module selection was “dumb”
6
18. The Timetable Link
Important!
Lecture A ends at 10.00am on Wednesday
Lecture B starts at 10.00am on Wednesday
Banner believes these lectures clash!
18
19. The Timetable Link
Only one CRN to play with so…
• Transfer activities where there is no choice
over timeslot.
• User Text in S+ used for exceptions.
Each activity instance = 1 row in SSRMEET.

26. Reactions and
Feedback from Users
Consider using the title slide as you
transition from one topic/agenda item
to the next.
27. Reactions and Feedback
“…I am sure these are just teething
problems with the new system but any
advice on how to short-circuit the Great
God Techno and to get around its wily
ways in the interim, and to secure Sarah's
place, and others, on EDUC 3311 and
Lydia's, and others, on their modules would
be very gratefully received…”
27
28. Reactions and Feedback
“…I know I am an old fart (I do know this
and with just cause because I am) but I just
cannot help thinking that the old pen and
paper system just gave us all a bit more
creative flexibility - even though it might
have yielded some headaches. I suppose I
have just become a 'Reluctant
Fundamentalist' in my dotage.”
28
29. Reactions and Feedback
• Not a magic bullet!
• Clashes still occurred:
– Changes of registration
– Pre-registration
– Combinations of tutorials/practicals/seminars
• Issues with internal Dept. Communications
29
30. Reactions and Feedback
BUT…
• it was a relatively simple “win”
• it caught clashes which staff missed
• it was perceived as a big step forwards
• it made use of data we already had
30
31. Summary
• Baseline Banner is worth exploring
• Timetable data is reusable
• “Joining up” data can be perceived as a
bigger improvement than it really is!
