4. MOHAN- THE RECEIVING AREA _
3 km before Patlidun, you break your journey in this cheerful outpost that is tastefully decorated with
shoots of yellow tiger bamboo, sunflowers and potted plants. While you freshen up, your luggage is
transferred to the Lodge and check in formalities completed.
Sip a chilled drink and relax on the rooftop deck, overhanging with boughs and leaves. You'll be glad for
the break; it mentally prepares you for the last leg of your journey-an exhilarating session of off-roading
on a 45-degree mountain incline.

5. bhakrakot
A HIDDEN HAMLET _
Tucked deep in the woods, about 22 kms uphill from Ramnagar, is the quaint and quiet village of Bhakrakot.
Hidden high up in the Shivaliks, this is a world removed from the dust and noise of the plains below. A
magical forest path winds its way through scented forests of Sal and roars up a thrilling mountain stretch
at a 45-degree incline, to bring you to this enchanted little village.Patlidun is located at one end of this
picturesque village, sharing its boundary with the Corbett Tiger Reserve, which accounts for the rich wildlife,
flora and fauna.
A 15-minute walk from Patlidun, on the higher reaches of the village, you can see traditional Kumaoni
homes scattered on the hill slopes. The mud and brick walls, courtyard, wood-work and trademark black
slate roof inspired from these houses will make you feel right at home in the cottage-suites of Patlidun.

Spread over a staggering 13 acres of
forest in the village of Bhakrakot, Patlidun
Safari Lodge is a tiny village in itself. A
village where Nature and wildlife reign
supreme and there are no more than 12
cottages: lavish, luxuriant, but with
unmistakable earthy undertones. A strong,
local Kumaoni flavor is imbued in this
village- cottages are named after the
months of the Hindu lunar calendar and
the two sections of the lodge (Kosi Bakhai
& Ramganga Bakhai; 'bakhai' is
settlement) are named after local rivers.
Weathered wooden signboards guide you
along a charming, narrow path of packed
earth and pebbles that looks in danger of
being overrun by the rampant greenery-
fragrant shrubs and Rohini and Banyan
trees . As night descends, knee-high
wooden lampposts and fireflies light the
way home.

breath of fresh air after the confined living
spaces of the concrete jungle. At

ARCHITECTURE _
The cottages of Patlidun display traditional Kumaoni motifs- woodwork, stone masonry, private
courtyards, a verandah with a tulsi chabootara, and signature, black slate tiles on the roof. The unique,
red-oxide cement flooring adds an earthy appeal to atmospheric décor. Interestingly, it has been
prepared using raw eggs to give it a smooth finish and enhance its natural cooling properties. Aipan
paintings on glass partitions, colourful Garhwali carvings on entrance doors and Kumaoni handicrafts
and showpieces lend a personal touch, and at the same time preserve and encourage local art forms.
Only locally sourced, indigenous materials have been used for construction and painstaking steps have
been taken to prevent any negative impact on the Tiger Reserve. By employing locals, treating its garbage
and using local produce as far as possible, Patlidun is making additional, concerted efforts to preserve
this fragile wildlife hotspot.

RISYA- THE RESTAURANT_
A huge redbrick fireplace dominates the centre of
Risya and casts the room in a rosy hue when slanting
rays of the late afternoon sun sets the red bricks
aglow.
Huge windows frame the grasslands outside, where
you can see drongos, shrikes and barbets flitting
around. Patlidun has recreated the shrinking
grasslands of Corbett within its grounds, which
affords delightful bird and butterfly watching
opportunities over delicious meals. Feast your senses
as you feast on pizzas from the live counter and
authentic local delicacies whipped up by our
marvelous chef.

17. get your bearings THULKUDI- THE BRIEFING POINT_
This vantage point gives you a bird's eye view of the scenic landscape in this part of the Shivaliks.
Standing at the rooftop, you can see the Outer Himalayas rising in the North, river Kosi flowing from the
East to the South and rooftops of cottages peeping out from tree cover. This is a good place to orient
yourself with the lay of the land, collect binoculars, your personal walky-talky and some well-meaning
advice on not to venture out alone after dark. In Kumaon, Thulkudi means 'big house' and indeed it's
designed like one, decorated with local handicrafts. At night, you can gaze at the diamond-studded sky
with the telescope and spotting scope stationed here or unwind in the breezy rooftop pavilion, open on
three sides.

18. At the Kosi River you can watch elephants bathing, shooting jets of water at each
other, looking so playful you are sorely tempted to join them.
Here we take you for a Hi Tea or a Picnic Lunch. If you are adventurous enough,
swimming can be an option for you and it is a delight to watch the birds in this area.

Early in the morning, when it's still dark outside, we pack a picnic breakfast for you and drive you to the
ridge at the far end of the Resort. The crisp mountain air will jolt you awake as you jolt along on the 4WD.
But what will truly leave you wide-eyed in wonder is the fluid panorama that plays out before your eyes: as
the first rays of the sun shoot into the inky blue sky, it changes colors to a deep mauve shot with rosy
hued streaks of pink till it slowly thaws into a rich, full-bodied saffron. Admire the view while you sip hot
coffee served on the bonnet of the 4WD and the stars pop and vanish one by one.

grass to the delicate fragrance of wild jasmine; from a
velvety-soft rose petal to the rough texture of weathered
bark; from the clumps of towering of elephant grass to the
leafy shade of luscious mango and litchi trees- when your
senses tailspin in a sensory explosion, you know you've
arrived at Patlidun Resort.
Even in the dead of night, it's never quiet here: if you listen
closely, you'll hear the low whirr of crickets and cicadas
sulking in the bushes and wild mushrooms sprouting on tree
stumps.

approximate total 1,200 bird species found in India. Patlidun, with
its endless rolling hills, babbling brooks and fruit trees, is home to
an impressive 200 bird species. You might spot a blue-throated
Barbet in the mango tree grove or a peacock taking flight in a flash
of brilliant colours as you step onto your private verandah. Good
reason to always keep a pair of binoculars handy.

From dawn till dusk the Forest is alive with fascinating sights
and sounds. You can hear the frenzied call of the monkeys
warning the deer of a predator scouting for prey; raucous
birdsong of invisible birds hidden in thick foliage; and the
piercing call of a peacock on a hot, still afternoon. More
activity is seen at watering holes, where animals gather to
slake their thirst. On the banks of Ramganga river you can
watch lazy crocodiles snoozing in the sun or floating in the
river like logs of wood. As the sun sets, head to the Kosi River,
where you can bathe elephants. They look so playful shooting
jets of water at each other, that you might even be tempted to
join them.

25. CLIMATE_
In the grasslands of the Terai, summer is
hot and dry, which makes it an ideal time
for spotting wild cats when they come to
watering holes to quench their thirst.
Winter has its own charm of elephant rides
through the foggy, shadowy tall grass,
while hazy purple hills hulk in the
backdrop. The Park opens for visitors in
September and stays open through the
summer till it shuts finally during the
monsoon season.
Heavy rains give rise to seasonal streams
and the swollen rivers makes it risky to
venture inside the Park.
However, that's no reason you shouldn't
enjoy monsoons in the Terai. In Patlidun,
you can experience the Terai round the
year, in all its seasons, and in every shade
and mood.
