1. Shakuhachi, Embodying Femininity and Functionality
By Pamela Delupio
The shakuhachi flute is a delicate looking Japanese wind instrument. Though it looks simple, it is
very difficult to learn and master. This concept compelled artist Jessie White to create the
clothing line Shakuhachi, whose designs are deceptively simple but extremely intricate.
Nine years ago, White’s curiosity and love for creating original artwork lead her to design
functional yet feminine clothing using modern, somewhat geometrical shapes.
“I have always been really into art, music, fashion and pop culture, and it was a natural
progression for me to move into fashion design as it was a great avenue for me to combine all of
this,” White explains.
The Shakuhachi design strives to adhere to the relaxed, sophisticated lifestyle that its loyal
followers embody. This concept is seen through the line’s signature pieces. The open weave
knits are simple and great for layering, yet the Robo Dress has a very interesting fabrication in
waxed cotton/chiffon.
White’s design philosophy: “Keep it fun!” Always open to new and interesting collaborations,
White tends to derive inspiration for the line from music, pop culture, people watching, and art.
Her mother being an interior designer, White has always been obsessed with the field and
considers a future career in the area. She keeps her mind open to possibilities and any creative
outlets.
While building the Shakuhachi line, White realized that fashion design isn’t just about being
creative, but being savvy and having a good business mind as well.
“We’re already making headway in the Japanese and US markets, retailers seem to really love
the collections over there,” White reveals. “We’ve got a great new diffusion line called Avec
Girls which has been in General Pants stores now for a season and doing extremely well.”
In the future White hopes to focus on expanding overseas, and on a personal note, would love to
start taking a bit more down time for herself in between seasons.
