4. ● The Cavaiola is a tributary river of the River Sarno through the artificial
canal called Alveo Comune Nocerino and originates in the Municipality
of Cava de' Tirreni, where collects the waters of various streams. The
first of these streams began on the sides of Monte S.Angelo, west of
the City of Cava and ran along a ravine, called Gargarallo, which
crossed the Royal Road, which led to Salerno, under the bridge in the
locality the Epitaph and, Keeping a short distance from it, it swelled
along the way, welcoming, on the right side, the waters coming from
the valleys of the Caves. In Camerelle the said stream took the name of
Cavaiola and its waters were channelled in part to the north, where
they took a small bed, called the Caprare, and in part along the same
Royal Road. Along this route the torrent collected the contributions of
the waters that descended from several points of Monte Albino and
reached Nocera Inferiore, where, through a thousand streams and
canals, It was dispersed in the irrigated funds of peasants and
pagans. It is quite logical to suppose that, in medieval times, when the
population of the entire area was limited and there was no need to
transform the mountain lands into arable terraces, the quantities of
water coming downstream were quite low and so were the quantities
of land eroded by the water itself.
history
5. In later times, when the exploitation of mountain land became more
intensive, the process of alteration began to affect more and more
negatively hydrogeological aspects. This triggered a chain mechanism
that could no longer be stopped and that, periodically, produced
increasingly devastating floods and damage to people, homes and
farmland. So it was that, in 1721, after another disaster, the Bourbon
government sent Colonel Alcovier to Nocera, with the task of proposing
the appropriate remedies, which, however, arrived only fifty years
later. The solution adopted in 1803 by the Marquis of Valva,
Superintendent of Bridges and Roads, was to build a new road of about
two miles, from Camerelle to Nocera, on the south side of the existing
road. This new road, built in relief and supported by retaining walls, would
be divided from the existing one, which would become a hive. This
artificial canal, which reached the town of Nocera, had to turn north and,
through a new canal, had to also reach the military district (today
Caserma Tofano) and join the course of the river Solofrana.
6. The
protests
Tolerance to the limit for the residents of San
Giuseppe al Pozzo: with the return of summer
temperatures, the problem - which has never
been resolved in practice - of miasmas and
the unbreathable air caused by open drains in
the tributaries of Cavaiola reappears. The
situation precipitates year after year in spite
of protests, controversies and complaints, but
this time the citizens are ready to take more
targeted action to move the agencies in
charge (not only the administration, but also
Asl and Arpac) the remediation of the torrent
and the identification (with relative closure) of
illegal sewage drains. On the initiative of the
group "Cava 5 Stelle - White Paper" starts a
collection of signatures that will be presented
at Palazzo di Città.
7. For years, in fact, there are reports, exposed, calls to the city police for the
unbearable smells that exhale from the waters of the river Petraro (tributary,
left hydraulic, Cavaiola) in the north of the city near Via Gaudio Maiori. With
the approaching of the summer season "the smell", will accompany, along
with the sultry heat of the period, also this year, the inhabitants of the area
in long and sleepless nights barricaded in the house, with the windows well
closed. With the signing of the petition, promoted by the association "Cava
5 Stelle - White Paper", the cavesi citizens denounce and ask for the utmost
attention of the mayor, the administration, the competent authorities and
public bodies with regard to the problem related to the strong smell,
particularly sour and nauseating, which affects the northern area of Cava de'
Tirreni and especially the entire area of Via Gaudio Maiori. Citizens also ask
to start investigations to identify the origin of the problem, to check whether
these odours depend on particular processes carried out in the industrial
area.
9. Photo taken at the Cavaiola stream during the lockdown of last year: ʺThe
waters of the Sarno River, the most polluted river in Europe, return clear.
Just as happened to the waters of the canals of Venice or to those of the
ports of the big industrial cities, also the Sarno seems to have gone back
in time, at least to 60 years ago. The same applies to the two tributaries,
namely the Cavaiola and the Solofrana.ʺ
10. news The Court of Nocera Inferiore has issued a decree of preventive seizure of the plant of La
Betoncave, industrial plant of Nocera Superiore, known for the production of cement
conglomerates and equipped with a crushing plant and a concrete production plant.
During the visit, the Carabinieri of Noe ascertained that the company did not have any
authorization to discharge into the surface water body of the industrial waste water produced
which, therefore, were illegally conveyed, in the Alveo Santa Croce, tributary of the Cavaiola
torrent. At the end of the investigation, the legal representatives were sent to a state of liberty
for the crimes related to the illegal discharge of industrial waste. The investigations of the
Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Nocera Inferiore and the controls of the
Carabinieri of the command for the protection of the environment against the companies
