How to choose art supplies
1. How to choose Art Supplies?
There is always a probability to directly jump into drawing or sketching as soon as something
catches our eye and most of the times we hardly allocate any time to select our drawing material
specifically for a particular sketch.
But then when we actually start the process of drawing, then we realize there are some crucial
things missing and the feeling which drew us to draw in the first place takes a back step.
And there is also a case that we just get confused while choosing art supplies.
Hence we have just drafted a friendly guide for you to help with your choosing art supplies.
We narrow our search first.
Based on the kind of drawing, we narrow our search. I'll go with pencil sketching first, since it needs
very few supplies.
A Pencil
A Drawing Pad
Eraser
Blending Tool
Ruler
Budget:
If you have just started then it is always good to go with products where you can handle in a rougher
manner but if you have been in this domain for some time, then going for quality products is always
good. Either ways there are two websites which have good art supplies online: Amazon.com and
P3store.com
I personally would recommend P3store.com as the products are of good quality and with right price.
How do you choose a drawing paper?
2. Again, if you are a novice and have just started, sketching or doodling initially on normal A4 size
papers is helpful.
However, if you are looking for a good quality drawing sheet for a landscape or a portrait, then here
are the helpful steps.
Below is a diagram to show different sizes
So, as we can see A1 is the largest and optimum for a large landscape. A2 and A3 are smaller than A1
and are good for portraits and landscape both. A4 and A5 are even smaller and ideally they are good
for advertising flyers.
Now, along with paper sizes we should also keep the paper weight in mind. The weight of the paper
is determined at the pulping stage of the paper. It is used in conjunction with caliper and density
which is the thickness of the paper.
It is all very complicated to get into the details and all you need to know is for a good pencil sketch,
the paper should weigh 200g/m².
What about the drawing pad?
Personally I would recommend to go in for this particular sketch book from Campap which has 60
sheets of as high as 110 gsm (which is very good quality) and additionally it is encased in a fine
hardcover
This pad is suitable for:
Pencil Sketch
Painting
Charcoal
Time for choosing drawing pencils
Here you have to make a decision that whether you want to go in for a set of pencils of different
shades or a single versatile pencil.
3. Let us start with a versatile pencil. When I say versatile pencil, a mechanical pencil can be made to
act as a versatile pencil with a 2B lead. Using one gradient helps gives more control on the way you
sketch and more control on the flow.
And practically, it is also very efficient to use because you do not have to keep replacing with
another one and comes with a lesser cost.
Pencil Set
There is this nice pencil set of high quality. The beauty of these pencils is, the lead and the wood are
quite strong and there is hardly any pencil nose breaking issue.
There is an advantage with pencil set as well. You get to experiment with tones of shades. Though
mastering the art of blending different grades is difficult but then creating a masterpiece is never
easy.
Now that you know quite some details about basic accessories, get them and start sketching your
masterpiece.
