Gonorrhea is a common sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It can infect the genitals, rectum, and throat. In infants, if passed during childbirth, it can cause ophthalmia neonatorum, an infection of the eyes. Gonorrhea is treated with antibiotics.
