The Religions of the Utopians
In More’s ideal city which he refers to as utopia, all utopians don’t share the same belief. More
stated, “There are different forms of religion throughout the island, and in each particular city as well.”
These worshipers adopted different form of physical element to portray as their god; among them some
worship the sun, the moon, and others the planets. There are many among those sects who even
worship man as their god. In this imaginary city the author is focusing more on the Christian sect, who
give honor to the only true God of the universe.
Utopians believe life after death divided into two parts, one part is eternal enjoyment; where
individual is rewarded for the goods he had done while living. Another word the person who received
the eternal joy has to practice self- sacrifice during his life on earth, and of course the individual life
must have been humility, benevolence, and self-denial. The other part is hell, where individuals who
practiced wickedness on earth will be punish for the deeds they committed. For those who practice
good while they were living utopians don’t mourn for such persons, a matter of fact, utopians are happy
for such death. After burial utopians went home and spoke of the goods that individual had done
throughout his life. Utopians mourn bitterly for individuals who lived a wicked life.
In utopia the priestly office is consider the highest post in the whole country. A priest had to
been chosen or elected by secret popular votes, Utopians believe that avoid partisan among the people.
There thirteen priest for each city; those who have been elected are consider honorable me and it is
very rare to find any crookedness in a priest.
Utopians celebrate every month of the year, they divided the months according to the orbit of
2. the moon and they measured the year by the course of the sun. utopians celebrate the first and the last
of every months, they called the first day Cynemerns and the last day trapemerns which mean in our
language first-feast and last feast. In utopia everyone live peacefully wealth is not a concern for the
people in utopia.
