A budget is a financial
planning tool for
managing how you will
spend your money. It’s
used for finding a
balance between your
income and expenses.
6. Why Make a Budget
Budgeting allows you to have a
spending plan for your money.
Knowing what your expenses
are and planning for them
ensures you have the
resources before you spend on
other items.
7. Budgeting & Goal Setting
Think about your goals and how a budget will
help achieve them.
Possible Examples:
• Pay down debt
• Buy a home
• Go on vacation
8. Know What You Earn
Find your total monthly income (after taxes),
be sure to include all of your income
sources.
Possible Sources:
• Full-time/Part-time Jobs
• Freelance/Side Jobs
• Social Security
9. Know What You Spend
Make a list of all your bills and other monthly
costs. Try to account for every dollar you
spend. These can be broken into three types
of expenses.
10. Types Expenses
Fixed Expenses are expenses that do not
change.
Examples:
• Rent/Mortgage
• Cay Payments
• Subscription Plans

Periodic Expenses are expenses that may only
occasionally occur perhaps annually, or
quarterly,
Examples:
• HOA Dues
• Property
Taxes/Insurance
13. Ready to Make a Budget?
Now that you understand the basics that go
into a budget, it’s time to make one!
Gather the information from all your income
sources, and start to think about what your
typical monthly expenses are. Don’t forget to
grab a calculator!!

Worksheet”. After opening, be sure
to save the file to your computer.
