"The Welcome Table" By Alice Walker/ "What its like to be a black girl" by Smith Both of these stories represent the African American woman who

She hopes just like we do that by changing the way we look we would be accepted into our society. The welcome table the old black women faces a
similar situation. The black woman from the story thinks is there something wrong about being an old black woman is wrong in this time frame. The
woman has told Jesus how she has cooked for them cleaned them, nursed them as white people but even though she has done all this good she was
still not accepted into their society. The author Alice Walker goes in to great depth of how this old woman was portrayed to be. In the story the writer
went into great detail of her teeth as being toothless. Her underarms smelling like decay and musk. And the furminating smell of onionskins and rotten
greens. Alice Walker (1920)
The comparison from these two stories reflected that both writers used similar writing techniques such as the vivid details of the black women from
both stories to covey there messages. The Welcome Table the author uses third person and also shifts the point of view of the story being told. The
white peoples perspectives were telling the beginning of this story in perspective. The point of view constantly changing as there were various

Importance Of Literature Essay
Literature itself is one of the most important courses throughout high school because it consists of various methods and techniques that can further

Essay On Importance Of Literature
The importance of literature on today's society
In a rapidly developing world, the definition of literature goes beyond what the readers see and perceive. It provides a platform for us to open our
minds to ambiguities of meaning, while exploring what the world really has to offer through other cultures and beliefs. Most importantly, literature has
taught me to support my own point of view and trust my instincts and interpretations. The boundaries of literature are endless and holds no limit to
race, religion, culture, and sexuality. With an infinite amount of advantages, I believe literature is an integral component of our everyday lives as it
redefines text beyond the literal meaning, thus allowing us to connect with human emotions and surpassing self–defining barriers.
As an avid reader and enthusiastic writer, I have grown to learn that interpretation goes far beyond literal terms. The article "Why Study Literature",
emphasizes the importance of literature in our education system and everyday life. Michael Meyer's states that "[w]hile people will say what they
mean and mean what they say, [...] language in our world is [...] maddeningly and delightfully ambiguous" ("Why Literature" 1). Literature acts as a
medium of developing critical thinking skills, leading to independent learners and readers. If we limit a reader's interpretation of text, it restricts
creativity and the idea of being open to multiple analyses. An example of when this technique was applied was in my

Hamlet: Literary Essay
In the play of Hamlet, Shakespeare sets up three plots of revenge which involve three characters, each determined to avenge their deceased loved ones.
Revenge is essentially a recurring element in the play and can be noted as an important theme. Revenge is often lead by uncontrolled emotions,
affecting an individual's thoughts and feelings differently and provoking the individual to act without a reason. The play helps us question the
justifiability and benefits of revenge through the story's individual characters. King Hamlet appears as a ghost and informs Hamlet that he was
murdered in his sleep by Claudius. He tells his son that while he was sleeping, Claudius poured poison into his ear. Hamlet is shocked by the ghosts
words. The...show more content...
(IV.5.135) Claudius is able to manipulate Laertes and Hamlet in a duel, claiming that "Revenge should have no bounds" (IV.7.128) and promising
that Hamlet would be poisoned to death. At this point of the play, all three sons are committed to avenging their father's deaths. Laertes is also
notified that Ophelia has drowned, further upsetting him, and worsening the current situation. The three significant characters: Hamlet, Fortinbras,
and Laertes each have their own ways of seeking vengeance, for their father's deaths and obtaining their desires. Fortinbras uses revenge as an
excuse to send in his army to take back the territories his father lost to King Hamlet, which justifies that he wants some sort of control. Hamlet and
Laertes know that their father's have been wronged. Hamlet suffers from depression, and the kingdom does not know the true reason behind his
father's death, so he is determined to reveal truth and overturn his uncle. Laertes is enraged about his father and sister's unnecessary death, blaming
Hamlet for the cause of it. The play can be viewed as a tragic story with multiple deaths mainly provoked by members of their own family and
kingdom. They are forced to duel, and fight to the death to honor their father's soul, rather then to resolve the situation in a civilized way. The motif:
revenge is recurring because the characters of the play feel the need avenge their fathers, they are driven mad by it, as it takes control of their mind.

Billy Collins Introduction To Poetry Analysis
Since the beginning of school, we have been taught how to analyze literature given to us. Teachers drill into our heads how to go through stories
extensively and identify various points such as plot, setting, characters, etc. When poetry is introduced to us, it is meant to be a written art piece that
invokes emotions to the reader. When we read poetry, we have a predisposition to pick them apart, investigate every word used, and try to find some
hidden meaning between the lines. In the poem "Introduction to Poetry," author Billy Collins conveys his disdain for the over interpretation of poetry
through his use of metaphors, sensory imagery, and drastic tonal shift. The first thing that is noticeable in this poem is the use of metaphors. The first
thing that Collins asks us to do is "to take a poem, and hold it up to the light, like a color slide" (lines 1–3). He references the idea that when we bring
things to light, we can see clearly through them while revealing its contents. Next, he tells us to "press an ear against its hive" (line 4) and to "drop a
mouse into a poem, and watch him probe his way out" (lines 5–6). Does the author want us to risk danger by putting our ears against a bee hive, or to
physically take a mouse and drop it into a poem to watch him find his way out? Of course not, unless you are a very strange risk taker. A hive is a
home for bees, which many bees congregating together make a loud buzzing noise. He wants us to hear what the "buzz" is in the poem.

Essay on Tsotsi, by Athol Fugard
The novel Tsotsi, by Athol Fugard, is a story of redemption and reconciliation, facing the past, and confronts the core elements of human nature. The
character going through this journey, who the novel is named after, is a young man who is part of the lowest level of society in a poor shanty town
in South Africa. Tsotsi is a thug, someone who kills for money and suffers no remorse. But he starts changing when circumstance finds him in
possession of a baby, which acts as a catalyst in his life. A chain of events leads him to regain memories of his childhood and discover why he is the
way he is. The novel sets parameters of being "human" and brings these to the consideration of the reader. The reader's limits of redemption are

It is from this inhumane being that the novel begins the story of change.
At the start of the novel Tsotsi knows very little about himself and endeavours to keep it that way. It is a rule of his to not think about his past or raise
any questions about it. "His second rule which operated then on through every other moment of the day was never to disturb his inward darkness with
the light of a thought about himself or the attempt at a memory" (36). This is because he doesn't know the answers to questions about his past and
instinctually fears memories, the reason of which is revealed later. But it is Boston, a member of his gang who is the one to raise questions, which
initiates a thought process. He became conscious of the fact that he does not know very much about himself. It is in this mind state that he discovers a
catalyst in his life.
By chance Tsotsi is given a baby. The effect that this baby has on him is life changing, because rather than abandoning it he cares for it. This
involves him learning to look after it, against everything that he previously knew about himself and at the risk of his reputation. He doesn't know at
first why he cares for it but gradually learns. The baby evokes unknown feelings in Tsotsi, but more importantly it brings forth the memory of a yellow
bitch. This memory has a powerful effect on Tsotsi and for once he found that "he was curious" (59) about his

Essay on Identity
Identity is a state of mind in which someone recognizes/identifies their character traits that leads to finding out who they are and what they do and not
that of someone else. In other words it's basically who you are and what you define yourself as being. The theme of identity is often expressed in
books/novels or basically any other piece of literature so that the reader can intrigue themselves and relate to the characters and their emotions. It's
useful in helping readers understand that a person's state of mind is full of arduous thoughts about who they are and what they want to be. People can

What is Literature?
Poems, novels, and stories; these are some of the things that first came to my mind upon pondering on the question 'What is Literature?'. And just
lately I have known that literature also includes songs, speeches, plays, and many others in written and spoken forms. I have also known that things
that are produced out of creative imagination can be referred as literary works which are the ones that comprise literature. Considering this description
of what literature is, the coverage of literature seems very puzzling. If literary works are those produced out of creative imagining, then it would
directly point to fictional works. But then, there are also...show more content...
Take for example the views of two individuals coming from different places on anovel based on the culture of one. It would likely be the same if their
culture and beliefs are quiet related but if not, then they would surely have different understandings on certain parts of that novel. Hence, defining
literature as those considered by people as 'literature' is questionable.
Eagleton also associated literature as any kind of works which are valued highly by people. But then again, since people may have different
perceptions on things, one may value highly a certain work while another person may consider it just as a plain writing. As stated by Ms. Pinzon, a
literature professor, a personal letter can be an example of this. The recipient of the letter can be expected to really value the letter while her classmate
may not. Hence, this can't define literature as a whole.
Then, what really is literature? Many great critics have tried formulating a fixed definition of literature but have failed to do so. In the rise of every
possible definition of what literature is, counter arguments also rise.
Literature, though it seems impossible to enumerate everything it covers, play an important role in every individual's life. One can influence using
literature or be influenced by it. Examples of these are the novels made by our very own national hero, Jose Rizal – the Noli Me Tangeri and El

Introduction To Poetry Billy Collins Analysis
Fresh Eyes and Blue Skies In the poem "Introduction to Poetry" by Billy Collins, the major theme the author chooses to cover is that poetry is
meant to be experienced and that you should not over think it. More often than not a reader will go through a poem and try to figure out the
underlying meaning after only reading it once. Metaphors and imagery are used side by side throughout the poem to prove this point. In the first
stanza the author writes that he wants the poem to be taken to the light and held up like a color slide. The author requests that the reader approaches
the poem with fresh eyes and not let anything affect how they connect to the poem, letting it apply to them in the way they see fit. The poem is not a
static entity, but rather it changes based on who is reading it and when they are reading it. Each reader will connect to the poem differently based on
personal experiences. Being told how to connect to a poem isn't how the author wants the readers to feel he wants them to be free and find their own
way through and make the connections that they choose. The poem is compared to a color slide because the true worth of the slide isn't known until
it's held up to the light and properly viewed; figuratively...show more content...
Like a hive a poem is also buzzing on the inside, each line of the poem is a different worker bee with an accompanying job. The author knows it
would be difficult and pointless to follow one bee throughout the entire day, instead he wants the reader to view the hive as a whole and appreciate
what it accomplishes as one and not as separate individuals. Following one line in a poem and trying to find everything there is to know about it isn't
the point, the author wants readers to view the poem as a whole and appreciate it for what it is without dissecting each and every line to

Romanticism developed from its early stage to its high stage with changes both in style and theme.
Early romanticism was more or less imitative of British literature of Romanticism. They were experimental and conformist. At that time, the new
United States of America was in a period of development, growth, experimentation and search. Above all, it was a time of extension of the American
nation and the American identity. During this period, some American writers did begin to attract notice abroad and their books drew attention of
important foreign figures. Although English literary models were still admired, the American writers soon turned to the American civilization and
found their materials in the culture and history of their native land.
American Romanticism reached its peak with some literary giants in Romantics ©в‚¬ Poe, Whitman, Dickinson, Hawthorn and Melville. They created
for themselves a new personality. High Romantists lived in a period of vast commercial expansion when Americans had more opportunities, more
freedom and believed that United States was the greatest nation on earth. However, romantic writers, otherwise, tended to depict the darkness of the
country, and therefore, their works endure deeper power.

What Is Literature? Essay
Since the 18th century, the definition of the concept "literature" has become a problematic and a controversial issue among various literary schools.
What is literature? What are the qualities that distinguish a literary text from a non–literary one? Does literature have any particular function in
society? These are some crucial questions whose answers were supposed to limit and define the scope of "literature". However, various literary and
critical schools have advanced different and contradictory responses to these same questions, which have consequently led to a failure in producing an
authoritatively established definition of "literature". This failure can be ascribed to many reasons, but because the length of the paper doesn't...show

This new sense, which was ascribed to the development of printing, was "a specialization В… to the printed word and especially the printed books
with certain quality [imaginative works]" (Williams, 46). To elaborate on this definition, R. Wellek and A. Warren have stated that "in all of them
[the printed books with certain quality], the reference is to the world of fiction, of imagination" (Wellek and Warren, Theory of Literature, 25).
However, a simple review of the history of prose narrative forms would show that this definition of literature as a category of fictional and
imaginative writings is irrelevant. Many writings which were written as anthropological documentaries were making use of fiction, while many other
fictional works were given the status of documentary and factual writings. All travelogue writings and western historiography between the middle
ages and the twentieth century are good examples to illustrate this point. Works like T.E. Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom, W.M. Thackeray's
From Cornhill to Cairo, Kingslake's Eothen, and Sir Thomas More's Utopia made use of both fact and fiction. Moreover, at the time of their
appearance, most of these works were conceived of by the western audience as factual and documentary writings. Later on, due to some historical and
political changes in the world, these writings became conceived of as fictional and imaginary works.

different. First let me say that deep down I truly do not like to write. I myself don't personally like to write for leisure or pleasure but rather I write
because I believe it is one of the most important aspects of being able to communicate with those around you, both personally and professionally.
To put differently, my attitude towards writing is that I write because I need to write and survive in the world around me. I write because I have
to, not because I want to. Hopefully this somewhat makes sense. To better explain let me make a comparison. When I am assigned a writing
assignment or I am writing because the action is being forced upon me I find myself not enjoying the process and overall the end result is subpar.

  • 6. Essay On Importance Of Literature The importance of literature on today's society In a rapidly developing world, the definition of literature goes beyond what the readers see and perceive. It provides a platform for us to open our minds to ambiguities of meaning, while exploring what the world really has to offer through other cultures and beliefs. Most importantly, literature has taught me to support my own point of view and trust my instincts and interpretations. The boundaries of literature are endless and holds no limit to race, religion, culture, and sexuality. With an infinite amount of advantages, I believe literature is an integral component of our everyday lives as it redefines text beyond the literal meaning, thus allowing us to connect with human emotions and surpassing self–defining barriers. As an avid reader and enthusiastic writer, I have grown to learn that interpretation goes far beyond literal terms. The article "Why Study Literature", emphasizes the importance of literature in our education system and everyday life. Michael Meyer's states that "[w]hile people will say what they mean and mean what they say, [...] language in our world is [...] maddeningly and delightfully ambiguous" ("Why Literature" 1). Literature acts as a medium of developing critical thinking skills, leading to independent learners and readers. If we limit a reader's interpretation of text, it restricts creativity and the idea of being open to multiple analyses. An example of when this technique was applied was in my Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Hamlet: Literary Essay In the play of Hamlet, Shakespeare sets up three plots of revenge which involve three characters, each determined to avenge their deceased loved ones. Revenge is essentially a recurring element in the play and can be noted as an important theme. Revenge is often lead by uncontrolled emotions, affecting an individual's thoughts and feelings differently and provoking the individual to act without a reason. The play helps us question the justifiability and benefits of revenge through the story's individual characters. King Hamlet appears as a ghost and informs Hamlet that he was murdered in his sleep by Claudius. He tells his son that while he was sleeping, Claudius poured poison into his ear. Hamlet is shocked by the ghosts words. The...show more content... (IV.5.135) Claudius is able to manipulate Laertes and Hamlet in a duel, claiming that "Revenge should have no bounds" (IV.7.128) and promising that Hamlet would be poisoned to death. At this point of the play, all three sons are committed to avenging their father's deaths. Laertes is also notified that Ophelia has drowned, further upsetting him, and worsening the current situation. The three significant characters: Hamlet, Fortinbras, and Laertes each have their own ways of seeking vengeance, for their father's deaths and obtaining their desires. Fortinbras uses revenge as an excuse to send in his army to take back the territories his father lost to King Hamlet, which justifies that he wants some sort of control. Hamlet and Laertes know that their father's have been wronged. Hamlet suffers from depression, and the kingdom does not know the true reason behind his father's death, so he is determined to reveal truth and overturn his uncle. Laertes is enraged about his father and sister's unnecessary death, blaming Hamlet for the cause of it. The play can be viewed as a tragic story with multiple deaths mainly provoked by members of their own family and kingdom. They are forced to duel, and fight to the death to honor their father's soul, rather then to resolve the situation in a civilized way. The motif: revenge is recurring because the characters of the play feel the need avenge their fathers, they are driven mad by it, as it takes control of their mind. • 8. Billy Collins Introduction To Poetry Analysis Since the beginning of school, we have been taught how to analyze literature given to us. Teachers drill into our heads how to go through stories extensively and identify various points such as plot, setting, characters, etc. When poetry is introduced to us, it is meant to be a written art piece that invokes emotions to the reader. When we read poetry, we have a predisposition to pick them apart, investigate every word used, and try to find some hidden meaning between the lines. In the poem "Introduction to Poetry," author Billy Collins conveys his disdain for the over interpretation of poetry through his use of metaphors, sensory imagery, and drastic tonal shift. The first thing that is noticeable in this poem is the use of metaphors. The first thing that Collins asks us to do is "to take a poem, and hold it up to the light, like a color slide" (lines 1–3). He references the idea that when we bring things to light, we can see clearly through them while revealing its contents. Next, he tells us to "press an ear against its hive" (line 4) and to "drop a mouse into a poem, and watch him probe his way out" (lines 5–6). Does the author want us to risk danger by putting our ears against a bee hive, or to physically take a mouse and drop it into a poem to watch him find his way out? Of course not, unless you are a very strange risk taker. A hive is a home for bees, which many bees congregating together make a loud buzzing noise. He wants us to hear what the "buzz" is in the poem. Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 10. Essay on Tsotsi, by Athol Fugard The novel Tsotsi, by Athol Fugard, is a story of redemption and reconciliation, facing the past, and confronts the core elements of human nature. The character going through this journey, who the novel is named after, is a young man who is part of the lowest level of society in a poor shanty town in South Africa. Tsotsi is a thug, someone who kills for money and suffers no remorse. But he starts changing when circumstance finds him in possession of a baby, which acts as a catalyst in his life. At the start of the novel Tsotsi knows very little about himself and endeavours to keep it that way. It is a rule of his to not think about his past or raise any questions about it. "His second rule which operated then on through every other moment of the day was never to disturb his inward darkness with the light of a thought about himself or the attempt at a memory" (36). This is because he doesn't know the answers to questions about his past and instinctually fears memories, the reason of which is revealed later. But it is Boston, a member of his gang who is the one to raise questions, which initiates a thought process. He became conscious of the fact that he does not know very much about himself. It is in this mind state that he discovers a catalyst in his life. By chance Tsotsi is given a baby. The effect that this baby has on him is life changing, because rather than abandoning it he cares for it. This involves him learning to look after it, against everything that he previously knew about himself and at the risk of his reputation. • 11. Essay on Identity Identity is a state of mind in which someone recognizes/identifies their character traits that leads to finding out who they are and what they do and not that of someone else. In other words it's basically who you are and what you define yourself as being. The theme of identity is often expressed in books/novels or basically any other piece of literature so that the reader can intrigue themselves and relate to the characters and their emotions. It's useful in helping readers understand that a person's state of mind is full of arduous thoughts about who they are and what they want to be. People can try to modify their identity as much as they want but that can never change. The theme of identity is a very strenuous topic to understand...show more content... • 12. What Is Literature Essay Charmine J. Cramales BS Math II Lit 3 10:30 – 12:00 What is Literature? Poems, novels, and stories; these are some of the things that first came to my mind upon pondering on the question 'What is Literature?'. And just lately I have known that literature also includes songs, speeches, plays, and many others in written and spoken forms. I have also known that things that are produced out of creative imagination can be referred as literary works which are the ones that comprise literature. Considering this description of what literature is, the coverage of literature seems very puzzling. If literary works are those produced out of creative imagining, then it would directly point to fictional works. But then, there are also...show more content... Take for example the views of two individuals coming from different places on anovel based on the culture of one. It would likely be the same if their culture and beliefs are quiet related but if not, then they would surely have different understandings on certain parts of that novel. Hence, defining literature as those considered by people as 'literature' is questionable. Eagleton also associated literature as any kind of works which are valued highly by people. But then again, since people may have different perceptions on things, one may value highly a certain work while another person may consider it just as a plain writing. As stated by Ms. Pinzon, a literature professor, a personal letter can be an example of this. The recipient of the letter can be expected to really value the letter while her classmate may not. Hence, this can't define literature as a whole. Then, what really is literature? Many great critics have tried formulating a fixed definition of literature but have failed to do so. In the rise of every possible definition of what literature is, counter arguments also rise. Literature, though it seems impossible to enumerate everything it covers, play an important role in every individual's life. One can influence using literature or be influenced by it. Examples of these are the novels made by our very own national hero, Jose Rizal – the Noli Me Tangeri and El Filibusterismo. During his time, Rizal has

Introduction To Poetry Billy Collins Analysis Fresh Eyes and Blue Skies In the poem "Introduction to Poetry" by Billy Collins, the major theme the author chooses to cover is that poetry is meant to be experienced and that you should not over think it. More often than not a reader will go through a poem and try to figure out the underlying meaning after only reading it once. Metaphors and imagery are used side by side throughout the poem to prove this point. In the first stanza the author writes that he wants the poem to be taken to the light and held up like a color slide. The author requests that the reader approaches the poem with fresh eyes and not let anything affect how they connect to the poem, letting it apply to them in the way they see fit. The poem is not a static entity, but rather it changes based on who is reading it and when they are reading it. Each reader will connect to the poem differently based on personal experiences. Being told how to connect to a poem isn't how the author wants the readers to feel he wants them to be free and find their own way through and make the connections that they choose. The poem is compared to a color slide because the true worth of the slide isn't known until it's held up to the light and properly viewed; figuratively...show more content... Like a hive a poem is also buzzing on the inside, each line of the poem is a different worker bee with an accompanying job. During this period, some American writers did begin to attract notice abroad and their books drew attention of important foreign figures. Although English literary models were still admired, the American writers soon turned to the American civilization and found their materials in the culture and history of their native land. American Romanticism reached its peak with some literary giants in Romantics ©в‚¬ Poe, Whitman, Dickinson, Hawthorn and Melville. They created for themselves a new personality. • 19. What Is Literature? Essay Since the 18th century, the definition of the concept "literature" has become a problematic and a controversial issue among various literary schools. What is literature? What are the qualities that distinguish a literary text from a non–literary one? Does literature have any particular function in society? These are some crucial questions whose answers were supposed to limit and define the scope of "literature". However, various literary and critical schools have advanced different and contradictory responses to these same questions, which have consequently led to a failure in producing an authoritatively established definition of "literature". This failure can be ascribed to many reasons, but because the length of the paper doesn't...show more content... This new sense, which was ascribed to the development of printing, was "a specialization В… to the printed word and especially the printed books with certain quality [imaginative works]" (Williams, 46). To elaborate on this definition, R. Wellek and A. Warren have stated that "in all of them [the printed books with certain quality], the reference is to the world of fiction, of imagination" (Wellek and Warren, Theory of Literature, 25). However, a simple review of the history of prose narrative forms would show that this definition of literature as a category of fictional and imaginative writings is irrelevant. Many writings which were written as anthropological documentaries were making use of fiction, while many other fictional works were given the status of documentary and factual writings. All travelogue writings and western historiography between the middle ages and the twentieth century are good examples to illustrate this point. Works like T.E. Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom, W.M. Thackeray's From Cornhill to Cairo, Kingslake's Eothen, and Sir Thomas More's Utopia made use of both fact and fiction. Moreover, at the time of their appearance, most of these works were conceived of by the western audience as factual and documentary writings. Later on, due to some historical and political changes in the world, these writings became conceived of as fictional and imaginary works. Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 21. Literacy Narrative Essay example At this point in my life I find myself in an interesting predicament regarding my attitudes toward reading and writing; more so towards reading. Years ago I used to love reading books for pleasure but nowadays I find myself reading things that little to no effort to digest. This includes the very basic posts on facebook expressing one's opinion on something or articles and threads on reddit discussing topics I find intriguing. Perhaps it's the severe senioritis that has overcome me as I enter my last semester at Chapman University. As I've gotten lazier I can see it start to reflect in my everyday life. It never really was intentional but it's just the way how it ended up. On the other hand my attitudes toward writing are very different. First let me say that deep down I truly do not like to write. I myself don't personally like to write for leisure or pleasure but rather I write because I believe it is one of the most important aspects of being able to communicate with those around you, both personally and professionally. To put differently, my attitude towards writing is that I write because I need to write and survive in the world around me. I write because I have to, not because I want to. Hopefully this somewhat makes sense. To better explain let me make a comparison. When I am assigned a writing assignment or I am writing because the action is being forced upon me I find myself not enjoying the process and overall the end result is subpar. The perfect example of this would be my junior year in high school when I was enrolled in AP english literature. I dreaded the majority of the class simply because there was so much writing involved in the entire course and therefore I was constantly writing just to get a grade. Being forced to write in such high volume every week for an entire school year was not enjoyable for myself and as a result the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Without books, history is silent, literature is dumb, science crippled, thought and speculation at a standstill." For instance, expansion of Christianity and the belief of immortal life through being a hero on their own epic, during Anglo–Saxon period is shown on the famous epic; Beowulf. Not only the religions, but also the old Anglo–Saxon immortality played a big role in literature during this time. The belief of living in an immortal life by having stories about them and be passed down from generation to generation – this was Anglo–Saxon immortality. (James 2) The stories were told by bards – called scops sang around the campfires while they played harp, telling the story of heroic deeds which usually consist battles and warriors. These stories that were told by scops were usually memorized stories and being exaggerated every time the stories were being told, and this often encouraged and inspired young warriors to attempt to establish their own heroic journey that can be passed down on.
