Sportsmanship Vs Sportsmanship
There is much debate in our current athletic culture on sportsmanship and gamesmanship. Stories of scandals seem to make the news headlines
almost weekly in college and professional athletics. In fact, a story just broke about the Boston Red Sox using an apple watch to steal signs from the
New York Yankees (Olney, 2017). Stealing signs has always been part ofbaseball but using technology is prohibited. There are numerous other
examples of athletic teams bending the rules or completely breaking the rules in order to gain a competitive advantage.
Sportsmanship is an important part of sports because it ensures that competitors are competing in a fair and ethical manner. According to Epstein
(2016), "The ethics of sports was once fairness. Fairness meant not taking undue advantage; if anything, it meant allowing such advantages as chance
turned up to go to one's opponent." The Illinois High School Association's slogan for sportsmanship is, "Do What's Right!" ("Do What's Right").
According to the IHSA athletes and coaches should, "Represent their school and community favorably through positive interaction with opposing fans
and players before, during, and after the competition" ("Do What's Right!"). Good sportsmanship means that athletes, coaches, and fans, respect their
opponent, the referees, and the game. This means playing within the rules, accepting the judgment of the officials, and be humble and gracious in both
victory and defeat. It is easy to identify good or bad

Sports events are essentially social in character. They facilitate the coming together of people from various parts of the country, at a national level, and
various parts of the world, at the international level. The dictionary defines sportsmanship as the face or practice of participating in sports or sport. It is
also the conduct and attitude considered as befitting participants in sports, especially fair play, courtesy, striving spirit and grace in losing. The 'golden
rule' for athletes is good sportsmanship. You demonstrate this when you showrespect for yourself, teammates, opponents, coaches, officials and fans.

Second even if the other team is losing their tempers, it doesn't mean you have to. We are not professional athletes but we are college players/fans so
we must hold ourselves to a higher standard because people are always watching. Third, cheer on your team with positive statements and avoid trash
talking the other team. Fourth when officials make a call, accept it gracefully even if it goes against you. Remember the referees may not be right
every time, but they are people doing their best just as you are. Lastly, whether you win or lose, congratulate your opponents on a game well played.
The next time anyone plays a sport, they can hold their head high after the event and look at themselves in the mirror and say, "I played my best and
treated everyone with respect." I know we play sports for the love of the game, but we must remember that we are all on the same team in the

Definition Essay on Sportsmanship
Definition Essay on Sportsmanship Abstract Although it is very common to mention the term Sportsmanship during any sports event, very few
individuals are actually familiar with the true definition of the word. For some it is the behavioral aspect shown by the participating teams or
athletes while others it is more than just a routine behavior and is associated with the deep rooted respect of the opponent as well as the outcome of
an event. Sportsmanship is known to be an aspiration which supports the argument that any sporting activity should be enjoyed without the worry of
a desired outcome. Here the proper consideration of respect, fairness, ethics, and the demonstration of fellowship with the competitors are shown. In
this regard, the term Sore Loser is referred to someone who refuses to accept defeat whereas Good Sport defines anyone being either a good loser or
a good winner. Sportsmanship could also be conceptualized as a stable disposition or characteristic in which the participants of any sporting event
behave differently as compared to what is expected from them especially in unwanted outcomes. In a more general sense, sportsmanship refers to
different virtues like courage, fairness, persistence, self–control, and has also been closely linked with interpersonal concepts of the way of treating
others as well as being treated fairly, respecting authority and opponents, and maintaining proper self–control when dealing with others. Sportsmanship

Importance of Sportsmanship
When you are on the field of play, it is vital that you remember to be very sportsmanlike, for numerous reasons. There are many spectators who come
to enjoy the competitiveness and excitement of high school athletics and a bad sport can turn a good, hard–fought and enjoyable contest into an ugly,
forgettable one. Cheap shots and verbal attacks on fellow student–athletes can forever taint a positive athletic career, and that is why it is vital that
sportsmanship is emphasized from a very young age. One reason that sportsmanship is important is the fact that it promotes healthy relationships with
your peers. Whether you are talking to coaches, teammates, officials, or even opposing players, it is important...show more content...
It is these adverse situations that sportsmanship plays a key role in. If you have been a good sport your entire life and are taught self–control from a
young age, adversity will come easier for you because you have experienced it before. A big reason that sportsmanship is important is that you are not
just representing yourself when you play. You represent your entire community and all that it stands for. If several players from a certainschool are very
unsportsmanlike and dirty, their school will begin to get this reputation. If someone continues to yell and complain all game, their community is
thought of in this sense. A prime example of this is the fans and players involved in the Pistons–Pacers brawl in Detroit. Although many of the Pistons
fans showed restraint and did not further provoke the incident, the entire town of Detroit is viewed on a lower level now because of a select few. This
is especially true in high school athletics. Sportsmanship is a vital part of athletics. It molds the morals and ethics of student–athletes for the rest of their
lives. The qualities instilled in players can be used in many real–life situations and will make the community a better place. It gives the community a
much more positive environment and promotes healthy relationships with your peers. This is why sportsmanship is an essential part of educational

Sportsmanship
Sportsmanship is the character, practice, or skill of a person involved in sports.
This includes the participant, the parents, the coaches, and all spectators. Sportsmanlike
conduct includes fairness, courtesy, learning to be a good loser, being competitive
without rude behavior, or experiencing any ill feelings toward the opponent.
Too often in any sporting event, the purpose of the sport is forgotten. Winning
has become overwhelmingly important to the adults involved. This attitude is
inflicted on the youth. People of all ages should be allowed to fully embrace the
challenge and fun of playing sports. Teaching, coaching, motivating, and winning

Too many coaches and parents
tend to forget the reason for sports for children. They get caught up in the excitement
and competitiveness. Winning is the ultimate goal, at all costs. The cost is the
effect this attitude has on the children. I have witnessed this behavior from coaches and
parents, where they have actually embarrassed and humiliated young players in front
of their peers. The negative effect this has on the athletes is obvious. They become
aggressive, sometimes withdrawn and angry, rude, and inconsiderate.
Sports are not just an activity. They form a stepping stone toward the future.
Sportsmanship teaches children how to interact with peers, how to relate and interact
with others. Sports can teach cooperation, sharing, and compassion. At a young
age participation in sports introduces players to rules, and how to incorporate them
into other aspects of life.
A child must realize that losing has absolutely nothing to do with self–worth, that
their personal value is not measured by winning or losing, but doing the best that they
can in sports and life. It is important that children and adults be part of a group to
feel acceptance, without the emphasis on winning.
Self–confidence does not come from winning or losing, but how the outcome
is handled. If you perform to your best ability, then you have won the only
important game.
Sportsmanship is what the activity

In a culture where sportsmanship is lacking, it is critical that stakeholders in high school athletics work together to reestablish sportsmanship and ethics
to the forefront of education–based athletics. In fact, " The National Federation, the governing body for public high school sports, would like for the
number one priority of high school athletics to be GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP" (as cited in Churdar, 2015, p. 2). Sportsmanship means respecting the
opponent, the officials, and the game. There are many people and groups who influence the actions and beliefs of athletes either in a positive or
negative manner, so it is important that these groups maintain a high view of sportsmanship and take proactive measures to ensure that good
sportsmanship is a priority for high school sports. Stakeholders Coaches Coaches have a huge impact on the sportsmanship and behavior displayed by
their team. According to Churdar (2015), "The coach bears the greatest burden of responsibility for sportsmanship. His influence upon the attitudes and
behavior of the players, the student body, and the fans is unequalled." (p. 2). Coaches have a huge influence on the behavior and attitude of their
athletes. According to John Wooden, "Profound responsibilities come with teaching and coaching. You can do so much good
–or harm. It's why I
believe that next to parenting, teaching and coaching are the two most important professions in the world" (as cited in Matheny, 2015, p. 99–100). This
is a very weighty but true statement. The majority of athletes look to their coaches for guidance not only in athletics, but in life. Coaches have a
profound impact on their players not only with their words, but with their actions. Coaches have the power and influence to lead their players to
become more sportsmanlike by modeling ethical and moral behavior. Coaches have the duty and responsibility to be role models for the athletes.
Matheny (2015) states, "We've been given the rare privilege and heavy responsibility of influencing young people on a daily basis, for better or for
worse, for the rest of their lives" (p. 53). Coaches need to take this responsibility seriously and model ethical behavior at all times. Dealing with
officials is one area that many

I am sitting at Sadiq Shaheed football stadium with some of my colleagues, watching a final football match of a football tournament. Young Syedabad

Now Syedabad Eleven realize that they are not able to win but if they try hard. So they start struggling and in this attempt start playing rough and injure
two players of the opposite team. The game ends and we start discussing the overall performance of the players for a while. One of my colleagues

There's no doubt that winning is one of the distinguishable characteristics of a sportsman but not the only one; in fact sportsmanship is the set of
attribute a game/sport wants to develop in a man. It is a mental altitude that induces a sense of fair play. Sportsmanship is how one acts and responds to
situations on and off of the field. Losing without without any ill–mannered behavior, having integrity and being respectful to sports and sportsmen are
the key aspects of sportsmanship. It is the persistence in terms of tolerance, nobility, decorum, discipline, integrity and punctuality and patience by all
means that determines a man's sportsmanship standards. In short it is playing the game for the spirit of game and not breaching the rules on any
account just to win the game.
Unless this framework, the soul of sports, is maintained, sports will stay a testing ground for physical powers. Sports without sportsmanship is a war, a
combat, where winning is an end in itself; if sports encourages the development of a fine character, sports without sportsmanship encourages eruption

Examples Of Gamesmanship In Sports
ETHICS OF SPORTS
To understand the role ethics plays in sport & competition. It is important to make distinction between gamesmanship & sportsmanship.
Gamesmanship is built on the principle that winning is everything. Athletes & coaches are encouraged to bend the rules wherever possible in order to
gain a competitive advantage over an opponent & to pay less attention to the safety & welfare of the competition. Some of the key tenants of
gamesmanship are:–
1.WINNING IS EVERYTHING.
2.It's only cheating if you get caught.
3.It is the referee's job to catch wrongdoing & the athletes & coaches have no inherent responsibility to follow the rules.
4.The ends always justify the means. Some examples of gamesmanship are :–
1.Faking a foul or injury....show more content...
Covert personal fouls, such as grabbing a player underwater during a water polo match.
5.Inflicting pain on an opponent with the intention of knocking him or her out of the game.
6.Like that saint's bounty scandal.
7.The use of performance, enhancing drugs.
8.Taunting or intimidating an opponent.
9.A coach lying about an athlete's grades in order to keep him or her eligible to play.
A more ethical approach to athletics is sportsmanship. Under a sportsmanship model, healthy competition is seen as a means of cultivating personal
honour, virtue & character. It contributes to a community of respect & trust between competitors & in society. The goal in sportsmanship is not simply
to win, but to pursue victory with honour by giving one's best effort.
Ethics in sport requires 4 key virtues:–
Fairness , Integrity , Responsibility & Respect.
1.Fairness:–
1.All athletes & coaches must follow established rules & guidelines of their respective sport.
2.Teams that seek an unfair competitive advantage over their opponent create an uneven playing field which violates the integrity of the sport.
3.Athletes & coaches are not discriminated against or excluded from participating in a sport based on their race, gender, or sexual

The Importance Of Sportsmanship In Sports
Sports, for thousands of years, have been a wonderful means for humankind to exercise one of our most basic instincts: competition with our fellow
humans. Surrounding all types of sports is the idea of sportsmanship, the respect and ethical behavior shown to all participants of a contest. Sports
fans around the world have all seen their share of sore losers, bad winners, and generally horrifying displays of poor sportsmanship. Yet, in all sports,
there remain certain dogmas that only the most poorly–behaved sportsman would dare to violate. The spirit of the game, in many cases, is far more
important than the outcome of the match, and a true competitor understands this. This is why many of our most beloved athletes are not always the
most talented or outstanding performers; it is those who play with the purest heart, for the sake of the team, and with respect for all opponents. Truly
transcendent athletes are those that are able to combine this intangible trait with world class skill.
There are greater lessons to be learned from this besides being well–liked in the sporting community. Sports, and by extension, the athletes who play
them, are able to go beyond cultural differences; surely there are stylistic differences between countries and regions, but in general, sports are
played the same wherever you go. Similarly, all fans of a sport are able to appreciate incredible athletic feats or truly classy displays of
sportsmanship. Simply put, sports have a way of bringing people together. In a day in age when settling cultural differences is of utmost importance,
turning more towards sports is a reasonably viable way to bring the world closer together.
The best example of a sport bringing two societies together today is the case of cricket contests between India and Pakistan. Tension and hostility have
marked the relationship between the two countries for much of the last century. What has become known as cricket diplomacy has been able to bring
an air of friendliness to talks between leaders. In 2011, the former president of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf was quoted on the benefits of cricket
diplomacy. He said, "Firstly, I think it can be used as an ice–breaker in case the two opposing groups' leadership is not

Abstract:
The main objective of this experiment was to find what relationships threre are between sportsmanship, motivation and athletic aggression. There we
three preset propositions that they anticipated for their theory: (a) self–determined sport motivation will be positively predictive of sportspersonship
orientations, (b) sportspersonship orientations will mediate the relationship between self–determined sport motivation and athletic aggression, and (c)
sportspersonship orientations will impact athletic aggression in two distinctive ways. A positive relationship between sports orientation and
instrumental aggression is expected. Yet, a negative relationship is anticipated between the orientations and the reactive aggression....show more

Traditionally, investigations have identified the most important factors of sportspersonship behaviors. These investigations lead to three theoretical
ideas. The first approach is the social learning. This approach believes that young athletes' different experiences of reinforcement mold their perceptions
of what is appropriate or inappropriate conducts within their sport. The structural–developmental approach has related the participation in high–quality
sportspersonship behaviors to the moral development of young athletes. The believers in this perspective believe that the more a child uses his or her
moral reasoning the less likely they are to use aggression on the sports field, thereby suggesting behavioral predisposition parallel to those associated
with sportspersonship.
The social–psychological view is the third perspective. This perspective is written about in the most depth. It explains that sportsmanship can be views
in5 different ways. These five views are, "as "concern and respect for the rules and officials, social conventions, the opponent, as well as one's full
commitment to one's sport and the relative absence of a negative approach to sport participation." Therefore, the athlete, would be have in correlation
with its support of the five sportsmanship orientations. Another important aspect of this theory is that it sorts out the difference between the concept of
aggression and that of sportsmanship.
Experiments also show that

Sports And Lack Of Sportsmanship
How Fear of Failure and Aggression Effect Sportsmanship Sportsmanship, or lack thereof, is a real problem in youth sports today. Many kids quit
playing due to a poor experience with sports. Many coaches will use tough love, and constant shouting to motivate kids, hopefully instilling that
winning is not just important, but it is the only thing. For athletes such as myself, this is my mind set, winning is the only thing in my mind when it
comes to sports. Athletes such as my younger brother have a real problem with being shouted at, and being put down by other athletes; due to lack of
sportsmanship. This can be related to a fear, of a fear of failure FF for short. The lack of sportsmanship is a real problem in youth sports. Due to
athletes and coaches taking out aggression because of the winning is the only thing mentality, and the real problem of fear of failure. The lack of
sportsmanship is leading to childhood obesity and real fear to fail in life. Is there a way to play a tough clean game, but not affect the children
with a fear of failure in a negative way? In the article "The Playing Tough and Clean Hockey Program," it goes into detail how the game of hockey
is a very aggressive sport due to the fact that the players are all in a confined space and acts of aggression can take place. Because of this, it makes it
difficult for players to control their emotions and maintain positive sportsmanship. It is impossible to completely eliminate the aggressive behavior;

The two things that most attract me to Wellesley are the Chandler Pool and the Lulu Campus Center.
Sportsmanship is one of my defining characteristics. Having been swimming for the past three years, the eight–lane professional Chandler Pool at
Wellesley attracts me deeply. Swimming has both strengthened my perseverance and given me the spirit of collaboration and sportsmanship. I enjoy
the feeling of racing in the water, pushing myself to the finish line. Swimming has given my body power, developed my deep thinking skills, and, most
importantly, made me into a leader. As the captain of the swimming team at myhigh school, I have had tough moments leading the team, because most
of my teammates are more senior than I and I am also an international student. But a loud voice without any action won't win over team members. I
changed the situation by working harder and improving my communication skills. I practice longer hours than any other team member., and became
the fastest one in the team, although I am not the most physically fit. I volunteered to swim the 500 yards freestyle and fought for my team to make the
state meet. I constantly practice my communication skills and improve my English. Instead of giving direct orders to team members, I help and care
for my team members. During my two–week medical leave, although my doctor advised me to stay at home and rest, I went to the swimming pool,
helping the coach keep time, cheering for my team and handing them water and towels.

Reflective Essay On Sportsmanship
Throughout my years of playing sports, I was always told great sportsmanship goes along way and never leave no man behind. Those two phrases
always stuck with me, and during any event I'm always willing to give a helping hand but I've never thought it would almost cost me my life. It
was the middle of March, and I wake up and prepare myself for my workout. When I arrive at the gym my trainer and a few other guys were huddled
up talking, and they all were really excited about something. I walked pass them in a brisk pace thinking to myself "hmmm, all the good treadmills are
available", I was so excited and felt like a kid in a candy store, because the chances of getting a good treadmill in my gym are slim to none. It's
practically like being in Walmart during the Black Friday sale trying to get a tv. So, I began my warmup while waiting for my trainer to come over and
give me my orders, when he arrived he had a flyer that read 5K –11 obstacle Warrior dash, and he said, "you ready for this?" I looked at him
confusingly and relied "what are you talking about?" he said "champ, I think you should do this, this will put all your skills to test." When he said
skills, he was referring to my months of lifting weights and cardio sessions with him. I though about it for a second and said "sure, why not?". While
looking at the flyer I saw the date for the event was about a month and a half away and it was in Covington, GA which was a two–hour drive for me
but that didn't matter. Like

"One who plays a sport fairly and loses gracefully" is how The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines sportsmanship, but what is true Sportsmanship
considered to you? Is it an attitude, or simply an act? Sportsmanship can be handled in several different ways. It's how one team handles another on
and off the field. Simply it could also be said as just the way you handle the game in general after a tough loss, or after an easy win, it how your
demeanor is during and after a game. Sportsmanship can be an Individual, as a team, as a community, or at a deeper meaning all of them together.
Sportsmanship has evolved greatly over the years. Sportsmanship is known as a couple different names including; professionalism, and showmanship.
Unsportsmanlike conduct, this results in a 15–yard penalty, such as excessive celebration during a game after a score or a well–made play. For serious
instances of unsportsmanlike behavior such as fighting, there are fines, suspensions, and bans from games, or even tournaments, and championships.
These are all examples of poor sportsmanship. The number one question is why suffer through penalties or pay thousands of dollars in fines when
you can just keep a calm head? Good sportsmanship is the most important aspect of a game. Sometimes games will get personal and tension will rise
very quickly even when the game is close and a lot is on the line therefore, sportsmanship must be

Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn. That is called sportsmanship. Sportsmanship is defined as fair and polite behavior when playing a sport.
An example of this would be playing by the rules as well as being gracious when you lose. Morelia Sanchez is a former athlete who played lacrosse at

I do think that these skills have helped me in my own life. I have learned that won't always succeed at everything, but that is okay because I learn
something along the way. I have also experienced competing with some people who exhibited poor sportsmanship before. They would often say that
my team cheated, which was very off putting to us. It made the game not fun anymore as well as making it harder to focus on it. Improving
sportsmanship and teamwork is really important in making everyone understand that it's about trying your best along with helping your team, not
about winning all the time. I think by teaching people this, they will improve their sportsmanship/teamwork skills and get along with people better.
One example of good sportsmanship in professional sports is the story about professional tennis player, Bailey Kent. She called herself out on hitting
the net with her racket when no one had realised. Unfortunately, some professional athletes show some signs of poor teamwork/sportsmanship. The
2015 Super Bowl was one of them. A big fight broke out between Patriots and Seahawks. This was all caused by Seahawks huge loss. This was
definitely not a sign of good sportsmanship/teamwork. I also think that having good sportsmanship god potentially impact our society in a positive
way. Teaching kids the value of good sportsmanship from a young age could help them become mature adults as well as taking difficult situations in a

"One who plays a sport fairly and loses gracefully" is how The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines sportsmanship. What is a sportsman?
The definition seems to have undergone a big change over the years.
If children follow the example set by today's athletes, the definition would equal a sore loser. High school sports should be a fun way to physically
express yourself as an athlete, but at the same time learn some of life's lessons, like sportsmanship, discipline, and respect. In today's society, winning
comes before everything, but if winning requires neglect of good sportsmanship, then nothing is gained in the long run.

Michigan State University's report, "Sportsmanship: Building Character or 'Characters'?" on the Youth Sportsman Institute webpage,
explains the basic idea of how the role of children's participation in sports affects their sportsmanship. The report gives examples of how good
sportsmen, and bad sportsmen are viewed by society. The Youth Sports Institute says, "participation is viewed as a double
–edged sword that may
have either negative or positive effects on the child"("Sportsmanship",1) and that "the critical factor in determining whether the
youth sports experience has a positive or negative effect on children is the quality of adult leadership"("Sportsmanship, 3).
The story "Friday Night Lights", written by H.G. Bissinger, gives examples of bad sportsmanship, like the Youth Sportsman Institute
suggests. "Friday Night Lights" is a story about a football–obsessed town in Odessa, Texas. The whole story expresses winning or losing
the game as a life or death situation. In Odessa, bad sportsmanship isn't just a problem for the athletes; it is a town–wide disease. The coaches talk bad
behind their player's backs, while the fans litter the head coaches yard with for–sale signs, blaming him for losing the big game.

Team Sports Reflection
I believe everyone should play a team sport. I joined my first team sport at the age of five, and I'm still competing in them to this day. Over my career
I've learned many valuable life lessons as well as picked up many skills. Sports are a great way to get outside and enjoy the world around us while
learning some valuable skills. Team sports can benefit us in many ways by helping to shape our personality while learning good sportsmanship,
which can transfer into other aspects of our life. First off, like any group activity, team sports are a great way to learn important social skills and build
lasting relationships while staying fit. On the website blastmotion.com the author writes, "It's (Team sports) where many important social skills are
learned, including acceptance of others, support of our peers, and the value of competition" (Par. 2). I believe the author is saying that it is essential to
play a team sport (or other social activities), because one can learn social skills, acceptance, obedience, and how to compete. I believe what the
author is saying is true; however, I would also add that many new friendships can be made. I was home schooled throughout junior high and most
of high school. I have relied on team sports to learn important social skills as well as meet many of my friends I might not have ever meet had I not
played a team sport. A few years back I joined my high school ski team and the new friends I meet introduced me to track and field. New friends
can open us up to activities we've never done before. I believe team sports bring people together. Rich or poor, white or black; it doesn't matter if
you have shiny shoes or better equipment, team sports are for everybody! I'm a soccer player and soccer is very popular amongst third world
countries. I have personally played with and against a lot of different ethnicities (most from less wealthy nations) and they play with passion for the
sport and bring a different and effective style of play.
Team sports allow athletes to contribute their own style of play, which can help benefit your team. Also it gives one confidence and a feeling of
self–worth. On my soccer team one of my former teammates, who was a defender, played with a unique style

Sporting Integrity In Sport
Sporting Integrity and Effectiveness of Sport's Governing Body Regulations
Introduction. Integrity is a multifaceted term, it has been perceived in a different way in unlike environments and context. Particularly focusing upon
'sports' it means certain ethics (systems) that are formulated to practice acceptable behaviors and standards for ensuring high quality and strong
doctrines of sports to maintain respectable personality; it includes codes of conducts, rules, bi–laws, policies and ethics. According to Thomas, k. (2012)
"The notion of 'sporting integrity' can be easily understood by inculcating policies pertaining to moral responsibilities, accountability and respect for
others and self–respect". The study on 'sporting integrity emphasis on behaviors exhibited by athletes and players while on the field or off the field. It
focusses upon activities they perform, attitudes they exhibit and experiences they encounter during and after sports. Fairness, equality and mutual
respect are the key elements of 'sporting integrity'. In the context of sports the sporting integrity emphasize upon process as well as results of sporting
practices .
Broadly speaking, sporting integrity can be defined as establishing promising environment for the development of integrity and concurrently,
unreceptive towards integrity and ethical values. The history of sports is full of incidences reflecting unethical behaviors practiced by athletics in an
outside the sport fields. Moreover, the concept of sporting integrity is also perceived distinctly by professionals and unprofessional all over the world.
There are evidences reported through media that young players, school –aged sport players and teams follow ethics more efficiently then adult players.
Nevertheless, the principles of ethics and integrity is enforced among players by coaches, educators, and its lay down strong impact on spectators as
well as spectators also has great influence on the behaviors and attitudes of the players; spectators demands particular behaviors associated to their
favorite players and players also gain attention by performing certain acts which gain popularity among audience. There is negligence to investigate on

Sportsmanship Vs Sportsmanship

  • 1. Sportsmanship Vs Sportsmanship There is much debate in our current athletic culture on sportsmanship and gamesmanship. Stories of scandals seem to make the news headlines almost weekly in college and professional athletics. In fact, a story just broke about the Boston Red Sox using an apple watch to steal signs from the New York Yankees (Olney, 2017). Stealing signs has always been part ofbaseball but using technology is prohibited. There are numerous other examples of athletic teams bending the rules or completely breaking the rules in order to gain a competitive advantage. Sportsmanship is an important part of sports because it ensures that competitors are competing in a fair and ethical manner. According to Epstein (2016), "The ethics of sports was once fairness. Fairness meant not taking undue advantage; if anything, it meant allowing such advantages as chance turned up to go to one's opponent." The Illinois High School Association's slogan for sportsmanship is, "Do What's Right!" ("Do What's Right"). According to the IHSA athletes and coaches should, "Represent their school and community favorably through positive interaction with opposing fans and players before, during, and after the competition" ("Do What's Right!"). Good sportsmanship means that athletes, coaches, and fans, respect their opponent, the referees, and the game. This means playing within the rules, accepting the judgment of the officials, and be humble and gracious in both victory and defeat. It is easy to identify good or bad Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Sportsmanship Christopher Kane MSA 560 Sportsmanship Essay Sports events are essentially social in character. They facilitate the coming together of people from various parts of the country, at a national level, and various parts of the world, at the international level. The dictionary defines sportsmanship as the face or practice of participating in sports or sport. It is also the conduct and attitude considered as befitting participants in sports, especially fair play, courtesy, striving spirit and grace in losing. The 'golden rule' for athletes is good sportsmanship. You demonstrate this when you showrespect for yourself, teammates, opponents, coaches, officials and fans. Sportsmanship does not simply pertain to players, spectators,...show more content... Second even if the other team is losing their tempers, it doesn't mean you have to. We are not professional athletes but we are college players/fans so we must hold ourselves to a higher standard because people are always watching. Third, cheer on your team with positive statements and avoid trash talking the other team. Fourth when officials make a call, accept it gracefully even if it goes against you. Remember the referees may not be right every time, but they are people doing their best just as you are. Lastly, whether you win or lose, congratulate your opponents on a game well played. The next time anyone plays a sport, they can hold their head high after the event and look at themselves in the mirror and say, "I played my best and treated everyone with respect." I know we play sports for the love of the game, but we must remember that we are all on the same team in the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Definition Essay on Sportsmanship Definition Essay on Sportsmanship Abstract Although it is very common to mention the term Sportsmanship during any sports event, very few individuals are actually familiar with the true definition of the word. For some it is the behavioral aspect shown by the participating teams or athletes while others it is more than just a routine behavior and is associated with the deep rooted respect of the opponent as well as the outcome of an event. Sportsmanship is known to be an aspiration which supports the argument that any sporting activity should be enjoyed without the worry of a desired outcome. Here the proper consideration of respect, fairness, ethics, and the demonstration of fellowship with the competitors are shown. In this regard, the term Sore Loser is referred to someone who refuses to accept defeat whereas Good Sport defines anyone being either a good loser or a good winner. Sportsmanship could also be conceptualized as a stable disposition or characteristic in which the participants of any sporting event behave differently as compared to what is expected from them especially in unwanted outcomes. In a more general sense, sportsmanship refers to different virtues like courage, fairness, persistence, self–control, and has also been closely linked with interpersonal concepts of the way of treating others as well as being treated fairly, respecting authority and opponents, and maintaining proper self–control when dealing with others. Sportsmanship can also be Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Importance of Sportsmanship Essay Importance of Sportsmanship When you are on the field of play, it is vital that you remember to be very sportsmanlike, for numerous reasons. There are many spectators who come to enjoy the competitiveness and excitement of high school athletics and a bad sport can turn a good, hard–fought and enjoyable contest into an ugly, forgettable one. Cheap shots and verbal attacks on fellow student–athletes can forever taint a positive athletic career, and that is why it is vital that sportsmanship is emphasized from a very young age. One reason that sportsmanship is important is the fact that it promotes healthy relationships with your peers. Whether you are talking to coaches, teammates, officials, or even opposing players, it is important...show more content... It is these adverse situations that sportsmanship plays a key role in. If you have been a good sport your entire life and are taught self–control from a young age, adversity will come easier for you because you have experienced it before. A big reason that sportsmanship is important is that you are not just representing yourself when you play. You represent your entire community and all that it stands for. If several players from a certainschool are very unsportsmanlike and dirty, their school will begin to get this reputation. If someone continues to yell and complain all game, their community is thought of in this sense. A prime example of this is the fans and players involved in the Pistons–Pacers brawl in Detroit. Although many of the Pistons fans showed restraint and did not further provoke the incident, the entire town of Detroit is viewed on a lower level now because of a select few. This is especially true in high school athletics. Sportsmanship is a vital part of athletics. It molds the morals and ethics of student–athletes for the rest of their lives. The qualities instilled in players can be used in many real–life situations and will make the community a better place. It gives the community a much more positive environment and promotes healthy relationships with your peers. This is why sportsmanship is an essential part of educational Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 6. Sportsmanship Essay Sportsmanship Sportsmanship is the character, practice, or skill of a person involved in sports. This includes the participant, the parents, the coaches, and all spectators. Sportsmanlike conduct includes fairness, courtesy, learning to be a good loser, being competitive without rude behavior, or experiencing any ill feelings toward the opponent. Too often in any sporting event, the purpose of the sport is forgotten. Winning has become overwhelmingly important to the adults involved. This attitude is inflicted on the youth. People of all ages should be allowed to fully embrace the challenge and fun of playing sports. Teaching, coaching, motivating, and winning are fine as long as the reason for the sport or activity is...show more content... Too many coaches and parents tend to forget the reason for sports for children. They get caught up in the excitement and competitiveness. Winning is the ultimate goal, at all costs. The cost is the effect this attitude has on the children. I have witnessed this behavior from coaches and

They become aggressive, sometimes withdrawn and angry, rude, and inconsiderate. Sports are not just an activity. They form a stepping stone toward the future. Sportsmanship teaches children how to interact with peers, how to relate and interact with others. Sports can teach cooperation, sharing, and compassion. At a young age participation in sports introduces players to rules, and how to incorporate them into other aspects of life. A child must realize that losing has absolutely nothing to do with self–worth, that their personal value is not measured by winning or losing, but doing the best that they can in sports and life. It is important that children and adults be part of a group to feel acceptance, without the emphasis on winning. Self–confidence does not come from winning or losing, but how the outcome is handled. If you perform to your best ability, then you have won the only important game. Sportsmanship is what the activity Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. In a culture where sportsmanship is lacking, it is critical that stakeholders in high school athletics work together to reestablish sportsmanship and ethics to the forefront of education–based athletics. In fact, " The National Federation, the governing body for public high school sports, would like for the number one priority of high school athletics to be GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP" (as cited in Churdar, 2015, p. 2). Sportsmanship means respecting the opponent, the officials, and the game. There are many people and groups who influence the actions and beliefs of athletes either in a positive or negative manner, so it is important that these groups maintain a high view of sportsmanship and take proactive measures to ensure that good sportsmanship is a priority for high school sports. Stakeholders Coaches Coaches have a huge impact on the sportsmanship and behavior displayed by their team. According to Churdar (2015), "The coach bears the greatest burden of responsibility for sportsmanship. His influence upon the attitudes and behavior of the players, the student body, and the fans is unequalled." (p. 2). Coaches have a huge influence on the behavior and attitude of their athletes. According to John Wooden, "Profound responsibilities come with teaching and coaching. You can do so much good –or harm. It's why I believe that next to parenting, teaching and coaching are the two most important professions in the world" (as cited in Matheny, 2015, p. 99–100). This is a very weighty but true statement. The majority of athletes look to their coaches for guidance not only in athletics, but in life. Coaches have a profound impact on their players not only with their words, but with their actions. Coaches have the power and influence to lead their players to become more sportsmanlike by modeling ethical and moral behavior. Coaches have the duty and responsibility to be role models for the athletes. Matheny (2015) states, "We've been given the rare privilege and heavy responsibility of influencing young people on a daily basis, for better or for worse, for the rest of their lives" (p. 53). Coaches need to take this responsibility seriously and model ethical behavior at all times. Dealing with officials is one area that many Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Speech On Sportsmanship Sportsmanship I am sitting at Sadiq Shaheed football stadium with some of my colleagues, watching a final football match of a football tournament. Young Syedabad Eleven are playing against Hazara Green Football club. The match is to end within seven minutes and Hazara Green is about to win the tournament. Now Syedabad Eleven realize that they are not able to win but if they try hard. So they start struggling and in this attempt start playing rough and injure two players of the opposite team. There's no doubt that winning is one of the distinguishable characteristics of a sportsman but not the only one; in fact sportsmanship is the set of attribute a game/sport wants to develop in a man. It is a mental altitude that induces a sense of fair play. Sportsmanship is how one acts and responds to situations on and off of the field. Losing without without any ill–mannered behavior, having integrity and being respectful to sports and sportsmen are the key aspects of sportsmanship. It is the persistence in terms of tolerance, nobility, decorum, discipline, integrity and punctuality and patience by all means that determines a man's sportsmanship standards. In short it is playing the game for the spirit of game and not breaching the rules on any account just to win the game. Unless this framework, the soul of sports, is maintained, sports will stay a testing ground for physical powers. Sports without sportsmanship is a war, a combat, where winning is an end in itself; if sports encourages the development of a fine character, sports without sportsmanship encourages eruption of foul and wild Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Examples Of Gamesmanship In Sports ETHICS OF SPORTS To understand the role ethics plays in sport & competition. It is important to make distinction between gamesmanship & sportsmanship. Gamesmanship is built on the principle that winning is everything. Athletes & coaches are encouraged to bend the rules wherever possible in order to gain a competitive advantage over an opponent & to pay less attention to the safety & welfare of the competition. Some of the key tenants of gamesmanship are:– 1.WINNING IS EVERYTHING. 2.It's only cheating if you get caught. 3.It is the referee's job to catch wrongdoing & the athletes & coaches have no inherent responsibility to follow the rules. 4.The ends always justify the means. Some examples of gamesmanship are :– 1.Faking a foul or injury....show more content... Under a sportsmanship model, healthy competition is seen as a means of cultivating personal honour, virtue & character. It contributes to a community of respect & trust between competitors & in society. The goal in sportsmanship is not simply to win, but to pursue victory with honour by giving one's best effort. Ethics in sport requires 4 key virtues:– Fairness , Integrity , Responsibility & Respect. 1.Fairness:– 1.All athletes & coaches must follow established rules & guidelines of their respective sport.

  • 12. The Importance Of Sportsmanship In Sports Sports, for thousands of years, have been a wonderful means for humankind to exercise one of our most basic instincts: competition with our fellow humans. Surrounding all types of sports is the idea of sportsmanship, the respect and ethical behavior shown to all participants of a contest. Sports fans around the world have all seen their share of sore losers, bad winners, and generally horrifying displays of poor sportsmanship. Yet, in all sports, there remain certain dogmas that only the most poorly–behaved sportsman would dare to violate. The spirit of the game, in many cases, is far more important than the outcome of the match, and a true competitor understands this. This is why many of our most beloved athletes are not always the most talented or outstanding performers; it is those who play with the purest heart, for the sake of the team, and with respect for all opponents. Truly transcendent athletes are those that are able to combine this intangible trait with world class skill. There are greater lessons to be learned from this besides being well–liked in the sporting community. Sports, and by extension, the athletes who play them, are able to go beyond cultural differences; surely there are stylistic differences between countries and regions, but in general, sports are played the same wherever you go. Similarly, all fans of a sport are able to appreciate incredible athletic feats or truly classy displays of sportsmanship. Simply put, sports have a way of bringing people together. In a day in age when settling cultural differences is of utmost importance, turning more towards sports is a reasonably viable way to bring the world closer together. The best example of a sport bringing two societies together today is the case of cricket contests between India and Pakistan. Tension and hostility have marked the relationship between the two countries for much of the last century. What has become known as cricket diplomacy has been able to bring an air of friendliness to talks between leaders. In 2011, the former president of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf was quoted on the benefits of cricket diplomacy. He said, "Firstly, I think it can be used as an ice–breaker in case the two opposing groups' leadership is not Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Abstract: The main objective of this experiment was to find what relationships threre are between sportsmanship, motivation and athletic aggression. There we three preset propositions that they anticipated for their theory: (a) self–determined sport motivation will be positively predictive of sportspersonship orientations, (b) sportspersonship orientations will mediate the relationship between self–determined sport motivation and athletic aggression, and (c) sportspersonship orientations will impact athletic aggression in two distinctive ways. A positive relationship between sports orientation and instrumental aggression is expected. Yet, a negative relationship is anticipated between the orientations and the reactive aggression....show more content... Traditionally, investigations have identified the most important factors of sportspersonship behaviors. These investigations lead to three theoretical ideas. The first approach is the social learning. This approach believes that young athletes' different experiences of reinforcement mold their perceptions of what is appropriate or inappropriate conducts within their sport. The structural–developmental approach has related the participation in high–quality sportspersonship behaviors to the moral development of young athletes. The believers in this perspective believe that the more a child uses his or her moral reasoning the less likely they are to use aggression on the sports field, thereby suggesting behavioral predisposition parallel to those associated with sportspersonship. The social–psychological view is the third perspective. This perspective is written about in the most depth. It explains that sportsmanship can be views in5 different ways. These five views are, "as "concern and respect for the rules and officials, social conventions, the opponent, as well as one's full commitment to one's sport and the relative absence of a negative approach to sport participation." Therefore, the athlete, would be have in correlation with its support of the five sportsmanship orientations. Another important aspect of this theory is that it sorts out the difference between the concept of aggression and that of sportsmanship. Experiments also show that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Sports And Lack Of Sportsmanship How Fear of Failure and Aggression Effect Sportsmanship Sportsmanship, or lack thereof, is a real problem in youth sports today. Many kids quit playing due to a poor experience with sports. Many coaches will use tough love, and constant shouting to motivate kids, hopefully instilling that winning is not just important, but it is the only thing. For athletes such as myself, this is my mind set, winning is the only thing in my mind when it comes to sports. Athletes such as my younger brother have a real problem with being shouted at, and being put down by other athletes; due to lack of sportsmanship. This can be related to a fear, of a fear of failure FF for short. The lack of sportsmanship is a real problem in youth sports. Due to athletes and coaches taking out aggression because of the winning is the only thing mentality, and the real problem of fear of failure. The lack of sportsmanship is leading to childhood obesity and real fear to fail in life. Is there a way to play a tough clean game, but not affect the children with a fear of failure in a negative way? In the article "The Playing Tough and Clean Hockey Program," it goes into detail how the game of hockey is a very aggressive sport due to the fact that the players are all in a confined space and acts of aggression can take place. Because of this, it makes it difficult for players to control their emotions and maintain positive sportsmanship. It is impossible to completely eliminate the aggressive behavior; Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Importance Of Sportsmanship In Sports The two things that most attract me to Wellesley are the Chandler Pool and the Lulu Campus Center. Sportsmanship is one of my defining characteristics. Having been swimming for the past three years, the eight–lane professional Chandler Pool at Wellesley attracts me deeply. Swimming has both strengthened my perseverance and given me the spirit of collaboration and sportsmanship. I enjoy the feeling of racing in the water, pushing myself to the finish line. Swimming has given my body power, developed my deep thinking skills, and, most importantly, made me into a leader. As the captain of the swimming team at myhigh school, I have had tough moments leading the team, because most of my teammates are more senior than I and I am also an international student. But a loud voice without any action won't win over team members. I changed the situation by working harder and improving my communication skills. I practice longer hours than any other team member., and became the fastest one in the team, although I am not the most physically fit. I volunteered to swim the 500 yards freestyle and fought for my team to make the state meet. I constantly practice my communication skills and improve my English. Instead of giving direct orders to team members, I help and care for my team members. During my two–week medical leave, although my doctor advised me to stay at home and rest, I went to the swimming pool, helping the coach keep time, cheering for my team and handing them water and towels. • 16. Reflective Essay On Sportsmanship Throughout my years of playing sports, I was always told great sportsmanship goes along way and never leave no man behind. Those two phrases always stuck with me, and during any event I'm always willing to give a helping hand but I've never thought it would almost cost me my life. It was the middle of March, and I wake up and prepare myself for my workout. When I arrive at the gym my trainer and a few other guys were huddled up talking, and they all were really excited about something. I walked pass them in a brisk pace thinking to myself "hmmm, all the good treadmills are available", I was so excited and felt like a kid in a candy store, because the chances of getting a good treadmill in my gym are slim to none. It's practically like being in Walmart during the Black Friday sale trying to get a tv. So, I began my warmup while waiting for my trainer to come over and give me my orders, when he arrived he had a flyer that read 5K –11 obstacle Warrior dash, and he said, "you ready for this?" I looked at him confusingly and relied "what are you talking about?" he said "champ, I think you should do this, this will put all your skills to test." When he said skills, he was referring to my months of lifting weights and cardio sessions with him. I though about it for a second and said "sure, why not?". While looking at the flyer I saw the date for the event was about a month and a half away and it was in Covington, GA which was a two–hour drive for me but that didn't matter. Casey Harral English 1101–23 Sylvia Johnson November 2, 2015 Sportsmanship "One who plays a sport fairly and loses gracefully" is how The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines sportsmanship, but what is true Sportsmanship considered to you? Is it an attitude, or simply an act? Sportsmanship can be handled in several different ways. It's how one team handles another on and off the field. Simply it could also be said as just the way you handle the game in general after a tough loss, or after an easy win, it how your demeanor is during and after a game. For serious instances of unsportsmanlike behavior such as fighting, there are fines, suspensions, and bans from games, or even tournaments, and championships. These are all examples of poor sportsmanship. The number one question is why suffer through penalties or pay thousands of dollars in fines when you can just keep a calm head? Good sportsmanship is the most important aspect of a game. Sometimes games will get personal and tension will rise very quickly even when the game is close and a lot is on the line therefore, sportsmanship must be Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn. That is called sportsmanship. Sportsmanship is defined as fair and polite behavior when playing a sport. An example of this would be playing by the rules as well as being gracious when you lose. Morelia Sanchez is a former athlete who played lacrosse at Kennedy High School in her sophomore year. I interviewed her about her definition of sportsmanship and teamwork, and also how she uses them in her everyday life. I also talk about my own experiences with sportsmanship along with examples of good and bad sportsmanship. Morelia was definitely someone who showed a lot of sportsmanship and teamwork while playing sports along with her everyday life. Morelia's definition of sportsmanship is to make an effort...show more content... I do think that these skills have helped me in my own life. I have learned that won't always succeed at everything, but that is okay because I learn something along the way. I have also experienced competing with some people who exhibited poor sportsmanship before. They would often say that my team cheated, which was very off putting to us. It made the game not fun anymore as well as making it harder to focus on it. Improving sportsmanship and teamwork is really important in making everyone understand that it's about trying your best along with helping your team, not about winning all the time. I think by teaching people this, they will improve their sportsmanship/teamwork skills and get along with people better. One example of good sportsmanship in professional sports is the story about professional tennis player, Bailey Kent. She called herself out on hitting the net with her racket when no one had realised. Unfortunately, some professional athletes show some signs of poor teamwork/sportsmanship. The 2015 Super Bowl was one of them. A big fight broke out between Patriots and Seahawks. This was all caused by Seahawks huge loss. This was definitely not a sign of good sportsmanship/teamwork. I also think that having good sportsmanship god potentially impact our society in a positive way. Teaching kids the value of good sportsmanship from a young age could help them become mature adults as well as taking difficult situations in a more positive Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Sportsmanship Essay "One who plays a sport fairly and loses gracefully" is how The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines sportsmanship. What is a sportsman? The definition seems to have undergone a big change over the years. If children follow the example set by today's athletes, the definition would equal a sore loser. High school sports should be a fun way to physically express yourself as an athlete, but at the same time learn some of life's lessons, like sportsmanship, discipline, and respect. In today's society, winning comes before everything, but if winning requires neglect of good sportsmanship, then nothing is gained in the long run. Michigan State University's report, "Sportsmanship: Building Character or 'Characters'?" on the Youth Sportsman Institute webpage, explains the basic idea of how the role of children's participation in sports affects their sportsmanship. The report gives examples of how good sportsmen, and bad sportsmen are viewed by society. The Youth Sports Institute says, "participation is viewed as a double –edged sword that may have either negative or positive effects on the child"("Sportsmanship",1) and that "the critical factor in determining whether the youth sports experience has a positive or negative effect on children is the quality of adult leadership"("Sportsmanship, 3). The story "Friday Night Lights", written by H.G. Bissinger, gives examples of bad sportsmanship, like the Youth Sportsman Institute suggests. "Friday Night Lights" is a story about a football–obsessed town in Odessa, Texas. The whole story expresses winning or losing the game as a life or death situation. In Odessa, bad sportsmanship isn't just a problem for the athletes; it is a town–wide disease. The coaches talk bad behind their player's backs, while the fans litter the head coaches yard with for–sale signs, blaming him for losing the big game. • 20. Team Sports Reflection I believe everyone should play a team sport. I joined my first team sport at the age of five, and I'm still competing in them to this day. Over my career I've learned many valuable life lessons as well as picked up many skills. Sports are a great way to get outside and enjoy the world around us while learning some valuable skills. Team sports can benefit us in many ways by helping to shape our personality while learning good sportsmanship, which can transfer into other aspects of our life. First off, like any group activity, team sports are a great way to learn important social skills and build lasting relationships while staying fit. On the website blastmotion.com the author writes, "It's (Team sports) where many important social skills are learned, including acceptance of others, support of our peers, and the value of competition" (Par. 2). I believe the author is saying that it is essential to play a team sport (or other social activities), because one can learn social skills, acceptance, obedience, and how to compete. I believe what the author is saying is true; however, I would also add that many new friendships can be made. I was home schooled throughout junior high and most of high school. I have relied on team sports to learn important social skills as well as meet many of my friends I might not have ever meet had I not played a team sport. A few years back I joined my high school ski team and the new friends I meet introduced me to track and field. New friends can open us up to activities we've never done before. I believe team sports bring people together. Rich or poor, white or black; it doesn't matter if you have shiny shoes or better equipment, team sports are for everybody! I'm a soccer player and soccer is very popular amongst third world countries. I have personally played with and against a lot of different ethnicities (most from less wealthy nations) and they play with passion for the sport and bring a different and effective style of play. Team sports allow athletes to contribute their own style of play, which can help benefit your team. Also it gives one confidence and a feeling of self–worth. On my soccer team one of my former teammates, who was a defender, played with a unique style Get more content on HelpWriting.net
