Campus Health Rights Initiative Advocates Reproductive Rights
1. CAMPUS HEALTH AND RIGHTS INITIATIVE
Campus Health and Rights Initiative, is a non-governmental campus based health club
situated in Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria. It was established to serve as an avenue
towards fighting challenges young adults in Nigerian tertiary institutions face in the areas of
reproductive health and sexual rights. Her strategies are protection of reproductive health
and promotion of sexual rights. These strategies are mainly implemented through students,
counselors, medical practitioners, etc. and the avenues are:
Campus Health Forum: this is a biannual interactive forum on reproductive and sexual
health information, education and communication through which we discuss and answer
questions on topical issues that affect campus based youths.
Safe Zone: this is an initiative that brings the message of HIV/AIDS to the doorsteps of
undergraduate students under a relaxed and entertaining atmosphere. HIV/AIDS
educational materials are distributed. Other issues include advocacy to advance
reproductive and sexual rights protection and training in peer education, youth counselling,
and leadership and life management skills.
Counselling services through our help lines, website [www.chrionline.com], e-mails and
personal contacts. We also have a friendly centre on campus and within the community
where free HIV/AIDS tests and counselling are administered and newsletter are shared on a
regular basis.
THE ACTIVITIES CAMPUS HEALTH AND RIGHTS INITIATIVE IS INVOLVED IN
We organize free voluntary counseling and tests for people, especially the underprivileged.
We conduct research on reproductive health and rights. Recently, a research proposal to
examine the issue of sexual networking among undergraduates who reside off campus was
submitted to the Development Research and Projects Centre, Kano. Also, In April 2008, we
presented papers on Voluntary Counselling and Testing among young people and Sexual
Harassment at the International Conference on Young People’s Health and Development
that held in Abuja.
2. We bring to the attention of the university authorities, reproductive right violations that
occur on campus. We are partners with other relevant groups such as the Baobab for
Women’s’ Human Rights, AIESEC International, The Campaign against HIV/AIDS Club
(CAHAC), etc.
We actively attend conferences on reproductive and sexual health and HIV/AIDS issues. Our
members were delegates in AIDS 2012 conference and ICPD BEYOND 2012. We through this
contributed immensely to laws and findings from these conferences.
World’s AIDS Day: we organize seminars, VCT and other programmes annually to
commensurate this event. We collaborated with SFH Nigeria; Street lighters etc. to organize
a walk and television show on the theme “RESOURCING THE NATIONAL RESPONSE
TOWARDS GETTING TO ZERO AIDS-RELATED DEATHS.”
