When Last did you try to convince your employer (CEO,
board or management team) about social media
unsuccessfully yet again?
I have good news. The fault may not entirely be yours.

Once upon a time, advertising was done via google
adwords only, internet-placed ads and traditional
advertising.
Management was comfortable and happy.

But somewhere along the line, someone somewhere digitized
our everyday relationships, we renamed it social media and
everything changed…for ever.

Businesses….“broke free”
so did everything else.

Gone are all the “comfort zones” and traditional routes in
businesses and the rest of our lives.
Everything we knew and were taught didn’t exist
anymore suddenly.

Competition to even the biggest brands can come from
anywhere as the playing field has been levelled.
How do you think this makes your employer feel?
very worried that’s for sure.

Folks are usually afraid of what they don’t understand.
In order to understand social media, management attaches a
thread of familiarity to social media. Here’s how…

Traditional advertising previously produced direct results in
sales removing the need for a marketing department.
So your management make themselves believe social media
will work in exactly the same way.
i.e one facebook post = torrents of phone calls for sales.
But you know it rarely happens like that.
Mostly, it doesn’t.

So how do you convince them to go from
“comfort zone” to “breaking-free” ?
Easy! Do your homework.
11. Fleuri Lagos FleuriLagos Fleuri Fleuri LagosFleuriLagos blog.fleuri.in WeareFleuriFleuriLagos
1. Understand how social media works; the nitty-gritty, in-and-outs, trends,
loopholes, platforms, analytics etc.
2. Understand how it affects your business/company particularly; the pros and
cons.

3. Draw out a strategy map of how your company/business can begin to use
social media using baby steps. Each step and stage should carry a recognizable
KPI.

4. Be prepared to take the first step but take time to sensitize everyone within your
organization (if possible) about the pros and cons you researched in (2) above without sounding
like a stuckup-know-it-all.
5. Be patient, politely persistent and consistent. This may take a while to sink in within
previously existing company policies especially within HR.
All the best!
