2. The Quran states that Muslim must pray in the direction of Mecca at certain
time of the day. For faithful Muslims, it was vital to be able to calculate the
direction of prayer towards Mecca. In the early centuries of Islam, Muslim
did not have tools to determine the Qibla with precision. Only from third century
onwards mathematical solutions for determining Qibla were available even
then their use was not widespread.
INTRODUCTION
3. From 3rd/9th century onwards, Muslim astronomers working in the tradition
of classical astronomy devised methods to complete the Qibla for any locality
from the available geographical data. For them, the Qibla was the direction of
greater circle joining the locality to Mecca, measured as an angle to the local
meridian. The determination of Qibla according to this definition is a non-trivial
problem of mathematical geography, whose solution involves the application of
complicated trigonometric formula or geometrical consideration.
4. This project is divided into two main parts which is Automatic Qibla Direction
Using PDA GPS and Mobile Prayers Times for PDA Application. This report
covered the Qibla Direction Using PDA GPS application and carried out on the
following objectives:
•To improve and design an innovative system for Muslim to determine the
current Qibla direction in real time automatically by using Personal Digital
Assistant (PDA) or Pocket PC with Global Positioning system (GPS) capability.
•To study how GPS works and the functionality of PDA with built-in GPS.

5. FIRST TOPIC
(QIBLA DIRECTION)
Kaaba is a building at the center of Islam's most sacred mosque, Al-Masjid al-Haram,
in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Kaaba is a reference point for all Muslim around the world
during their prayer. From any point in the world, the direction facing the Kaaba is
called the qibla. The qibla is a direction such that when a human observer faces it,
it is as if he is looking at the diameter of the earth passing through the Kaaba.
Kaaba is located at (21.42330 degree north, 39,8230 degree east) in Mecca city in
Saudi Arabia. Muslim people must face their chest to Kaaba every time they do
their prayer for at least five times a day.

ASSISTANT (PDA) WITH
GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS)
A personal digital assistant (PDA) which is also known as a handled PC, or
personal data assistant. It is a mobile device that functions as a personal
information manager. It is functionally as an automatic navigation. The device
will locate qibla direction based on users current location. This device use PIC
microcontroller equipped with GPS and digital compass where it will
communicate with PDA using Bluetooth technology and display the exact Qibla
direction and prayer time automatically at any place in the world. This device is
reliable and accurate in determining the Qibla direction and prayer times.
