2. I
Overview
“Once you have experienced flying, you will walk
the earth looking up at the sky, because you have
been there and wish to return.” Leonardo da Vinci
Skybirds brings the fields of music, dance, acting and acrobatics to create a
theatrical experience for audiences ranging from die-hard musical fans to
adrenaline seekers to those looking for the next great original play.
Our venue should allow for high-flying stunts to be scattered throughout the
show while making it possible to set the audience in the midst of the action.
With the support of subtle and effective scene-setting cinematic projections
we will most importantly watch 3-dimensional characters push for their
dreams in scenes and through straightforward dialogue that enable the
complexity of universal human relationships to unfold.
Set in the world of birds and flying the aesthetic of the show is guided along
by a concert feel of a rich and varied new age rock soundtrack.
Skybirds can be categorized as follows:
De La Guarda meets The Lion King at a Depeche Mode Concert...

The Plot & The Set
The long banished and once-prince Blackbeak, returns home to take back his
birthright from his ailing father and ascends the throne. He bans flying
effective immediately, making it punishable by defeathering or death and
takes for himself an unlikely queen in his crippled childhood friend
Brokenwing.
The complete outsider Icarus, a flying teacher to Brokenwing's twin brothers,
is an unwilling hero playing by his own rules. But smitten as he is by
Brokenwing, he is pulled into the fight to free her, which in turn becomes a
quest for all birds' freedom.
Our set design fuses juxtaposing aesthetics: nature versus the imagined
future. The natural primitive aspect can be seen through the materials used:
wood, rocks and sand. A large built-in LED screen represents the other,
allowing for setting the tone with original footage or animation. The design is a
modern take on the bare amphitheaters of ancient Greece and it envelops the
audience within once the actors take to the 'sky' with the use of ropes on a
flying truss.
