You probably know TIFF best for its flagship event, the annual Toronto International Film Festival in September.
TIFF is so much more than a 10 day film festival, and their work continues well beyond the red carpet.
Five years ago, TIFF opened a year-round facility called TIFF Bell Lightbox.
The impact of donations to TIFF is visible throughout TIFF Bell Lightbox, with its innovative, diverse, and original programming,.
This includes:
major exhibitions
learning programmes for youth and adults
school workshops
interactive family activities
lots and lots of film screenings
on-stage conversations and so much more.
If you love film, TIFF is a very exciting place.
So, what is TIFF all about?
Here is their vision and mission statements.
VISION: be the global centre for film culture
MISSION: transform the way people see the world through film
Today I’d like to tell you a bit more about how TIFF inspires me, and how you could get involved.
Working with children and youth from under-served communities;
students and educators;
care-givers and clients at Inpatient Psychiatry Units at several Toronto hospitals;
the next generation of filmmakers and film-lovers.
Here are some of TIFF’s programmes that touch on this area.
Some highlights:
Pocket Fund
A donor-driven subsidy programme that brings children, youth, and families in under-serviced areas of the GTA to experience free film s, film-craft workshops, and filmmaker visits at TIFF.
Special Delivery
Brings films and filmmakers out into the community at social service agencies, schools, and community centres to meet and work with young people. Through this programme, youth learn to create their own films, write their own scripts, and tell their own stories.
Preserving the art and history of film;
providing access to resources for students, scholars and cinephiles;
uncovering cinema heritage from the vaults
Film Reference Library
TIFF’s film library holds the largest collection of English-language Canadian film and film-related artifacts in the world.
They are one of the only institutions in Canada that’s actively preserving, conserving, and restoring films.
TIFF Cinematheque
TIFF is also one of the few organizations that still projects film on film – showing movies the way directors intended – in a variety of legacy formats. This includes 35mm and 70mm, as well as modern digital formats.
Going to TIFF’s Cinematheque is like going to film school – you get to see the ongoing history of cinema in pristine presentation.
Reaching out to art-lovers and rule-breakers;
supporting local and international visual and media artists;
commissioning new works and exploring diverse cultures
If you love contemporary art, you’ll love it at TIFF.
Wavelengths
At the Festival, they showcase the best in moving image artwork, both on the screen and in the gallery. These artists are redefining how we think about “film” – often in new and exciting ways.
Free Screen
The Free Screen is a monthly series of free screenings that showcase experimental work and the avant-garde.
Exhibitions
TIFF’s building has two galleries that display museum-style exhibitions like their upcoming show on Andy Warhol, which opens in October.
Discovering and developing filmmakers from around the world;
nurturing and showcasing talent;
help filmmakers grow new skills, access new networks and jumpstart their careers
Studio
In TIFF Studio, a group of 10 producers is selected to participate in a year-round professional development programme. They convene monthly with an incredible list of industry giants to learn, connect, and grow.
Pitch This!
Pitch This is a pitching forum where 6 filmmakers get trained in how to develop and pitch their projects to a group of industry professionals. In six minutes, they convince them why their films are worth investing in. The winner receives $15,000 in start-up funding.
Film Circuit
TIFF also brings Canadian and independent films “on the road” through Film Circuit. With a focus on rural and remote communities, the Circuit reached over 300,000 people last year – from Salmon Arm, British Columbia, to Guelph, Ontario, all the way to Newfoundland.
As a charity, TIFF relies on support from corporate, government and philanthropic sources.
As individuals, there are many ways we can help make all of the vital work happen.
Donations of all sizes have a real and immediate impact on TIFF’s work and can be directed to the area you are most passionate about.
SUGGESTION: cut slides 13- 16 and include brief details of each way of giving in the notes.
Encourage Lisa to highlight the ways she gives (member, legacy, has she attended any events?!) and the great experiences she has had giving in that way.
Mention there are several TIFF staff members in the room, please feel free to speak to them if you are interested in finding out more.
