IIP Industrial Internet Platform from VISCOM Visual Communications AG,
Reichenbachstrasse 61, 3004 Bern, Switzerland nv@viscomvisual.com
IIP is essential for the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Factories of the Future (FoF)
Topology of an industry capable Internet
Today’s internet is based on the Client-Server-Principle: A powerful Server gets accessed from
many clients. This is illustrated by the upper part in this slide. However, for applications in the
internet of things (IoT), the required topology is the other way round: A client is gathering data
from different sources (things) in parallel at real time and interlinking this data to present
meaningful system information to a user.
Viscom’s industrial internet platform (IIP) is supporting this topology in a optimized manner and
plays the information platform between things and the Internet. Apart of this topology mind shift,
IIP is addressing the challenge of IoE with 5 other key characteristics:
1 automated adoption to things to manage change,
2 merging design and runtime in order to avoid restarts in the world of things,
3 establish connections of distributed real time systems (things) in order to ensure confidentiality,
integrity, availability and scalability into 10’000+ data points. Connectivity takes out the
geographic aspect of distributed systems. The entire systems is available at the finger-tip to a
assigned person.
4 Industrial internet platform is adding redundancy to the distributed real time systems (things),
hence increasing business continuity,
5. IIP is lifting the world of things onto a Web-graphical user interface in HTML5 Technology –a
mobile computing enabled technology. Or in other words, IIP is transforming the distributed
world of things into an adaptive real time system on a web GUI, considering the quality aspects
of the industry.

Adaptive System
In the real world of things, nothing remains the same over the course of time. Every stystem is
under constant change.
IIP’s design principle is considering this and has a built in capability to automatically adopt in
runtime mode at any given time to its connected peripheral equipment (things). There is no need
to restart/stop the underlying world of things or the IIP. This is true for both, if things are added
or if things are taken out of the system. IIP simply follows the characteristics of things. This
flexibility and adoption of IIP are cornerstones of the customer acceptance to bring their
distributed real time systems (things) to the internet. IIP is adopting constantly the world of
things.
Online Project development, merging Project development and runtime system
With and through IIP, project development tasks can be executed at any given time. This is
particularly valuable for de-centralized systems, which do not allow a re-start or reset. In the
world of IoE the geographical distributed real time systems cannot be restarted after a regular
maintenance of a system, hence this IIP characteristic was a key requirement from our customers.
Geographical distributed systems
Geographical distributed IIP Systems are forming one single system automatically. This allows
interconnecting things completely independent of their geographical aspects. IIP includes ‘the
power of connection’ in his design principle.
Redundancy
With IIP, we build redundant systems by design. In IoE this is required were business continuity
is a highly ranked requirement.
Webtechnology
The Web Graphical user interface of IIP is based on HTML5-Technology, which was selected
because it is particularly suited for mobile computing. From bottom up to the top-to the web-
layer –IIP is acting as a adaptive system and hence is constantly adopting to the ever changing
characteristics of the connected things.
