Art Pro INK is a mobile application that allows tattoo enthusiasts to discover and connect with tattoo
artists and studios in their local community. The goal for Art Pro INK is to give users a simple and intuitive
way to browse, collect and store tattoo inspiration, and get familiar with the artists and studios work. Art
Pro INK allows users to feel more comfortable with searching for new inspiration and finding the right
tattoo artist for their next tattoo.

Project Process
My entire UX process can be shown in a 6-part journey
The Research phase encapsulates identifying a problem and value a proposition, followed by a
competitive analysis of competitors with in the market of tattoo applications, ending with surveys and
interviews to better understand what problems users encounter, that the app might solve.
Next, the Define phase, User Design focuses on developing user personas and journey maps to illustrate
the appās user-in-mind and target audience.
The Ideation phase highlights the information architecture of the app through user flows, card sorting
and a visual piracy of the app.
The Wire-framing and Prototyping phase implements the research, survey and interviews insights,
personas, and task user flows into the creation of the app screens. There are three degrees of
prototyping: low-fidelity which focuses on building the architecture of the app, mid-fidelity which
translates the low-fidelity images in to a simple mockup, followed by a high-fidelity prototype which
reflects how the app will actually look on the users phone.
The minimum viable product (MVP) ready, Usability testing offers the product to be tested for major
errors, user flows issues, and design errors.
Lastly, thanking the critiques and implementing the changes into the product is the Design Iterations
phase. For this project the design have been alternated 7 times.

Competitive Analysis

User Interviews
Survey and Interview Insights
Online Survey
I conducted a competitive analysis of two competitors on the app market, offering their users the
possibility to browse tattoo inspiration and book appointments with tattoo artists & studios.
The two competitor apps I conducted a competitive analysis for were InkSquad and Tattoodo.
This gave me insight to what the
competitors had to offer their users,
where in the market they had their
strengths and weaknesses.
Conducting the competitive analysis offered me an insight to design a user centred
tattoo application, offering the users a setup, with a selection of preferred features, with
a focus on tattoo inspiration and connection to the tattoo artist.
I used the new insight from the online survey, to set up a script, for some in person user
interviews with participants in my target audience group.
The following questions were used as a base for the interviews, to gain insight about the
participants wants and needs, when searching for inspiration and tattoo artists, as well as
their experiences.
Is was important for me that the participants felt comfortable during the interviews, and had
the chance to tell their stories, therefore the interviews were scheduled over a couple of days.
In the competitors analysis, I gained a good insight of what the app marked had to offer tattoo
enthusiasts, in their search for inspiration, next tattoo, tattoo artists and studios. This gave me a
solid base to begin researching for my project.
The first step in my research were an online survey, conducted via Google Forms. The survey were
posted in 2 social media groups and had a total of 82 responses, from variated age ranges (21 to 50+),
all with an interest in tattoos. The survey provided me with sufficient data, to analysis and insights to

SWOT
Survey
My tattoo application, need to be capable of guiding the users in the process from dreaming about
getting a tattoo, through wanting a tattoo, to actually getting in touch with the right tattoo artist in the local
area.
Ā
By allowing the user to search for different tattoo designs linked with the artists the user can be inspired,
see what previous work the tattoo artist have done as well as getting in touch with the artist. It will also be
necessary for the user to see other user ratings for the tattoo artists.
āIām an expat living in Berlin, I have recently decided that I will like to have a
new tattoo, but have difficulties with finding a trustworthy tattoo artist who
can make exactly that tattoo Iām dreaming about.ā
Ā
āIām really keen to the idea of having a tattoo done, but Iām not exactly sure
what style will fit me, so I need a place to get inspiredā
Target audience:
The survey fits the wished target audience, the majority
of the participants were to 18 ā 40 years of age.
The survey showed that itās a small amount of the
participants that got their first tattoo before the age of
18 or after the age of 40.
The local tattoo artist:
Itās important to provide users with an artist portfolio so
the user can have insight in the artists previous work.
Preferable a link to their Instagram account, because itās
the second most desired place to search inspiration
Augmented reality (AR):
Not many participants knows this feature, this tells that
itās still an unknown feature to most users. Therefore itāll
be worth to gain further knowledge about this feature in
particular, to figure out if itās a good thing to include the
feature or dismiss the idea before we move on with the
Overall, it seems that the participants largely used personal references, Instagram and own unique tattoo ideas
when researching for their next tattoo. Choice of tattoo artist and distance were somehow less mentioned as
important factors, when deciding what tattoo they wanted to have done, however it was important that they could
see previous work from the artist to ensure that the artist had the right skillset, to do what they were dreaming
about. Most of the participants didnāt preferred a specific artist, and didnāt minded to travel to get the tattoo done.
In fact all the interviewees live in smaller villages n the countryside, with no local tattoo studios within 20
kilometers (30 minutes by car) distance from their home.
All of the interviewees mentioned that they see their tattoos as a unique personal thing, as no one could take from
them, as reminders for them self to care, about someone special in their life or something they find difficult where
they are using the tattoo as an emotional support.
After having the first tattoo, they donāt seem to have any fears. Hygiene standards in Denmark , is by law really
high and therefore they donāt worry about getting infections etc.
What all the interviewees have in common is that they all are thinking about their next tattoo, or alterations on
those they already have. For them itās important that the tattoos they have are looking good and have a meaning
to them.
What we also can see is that the ones which have been done spontaneously not always equals regrets.
None of the interviewees had ever used AR for their tattoos, and most havenāt even thought about using a tattoo
app for their research trying to find inspiration for their next tattoo. So if we have to make a tattoo app itāll be
First tattoo:
Itās clear that not all tattoo artists have the skillset a good
job as a tattoo artist. Regrets not only to the content of the
tattoo but also badly done tattoos, low quality of ink.
Therefore a certain skillset must be shown by the tattoo
artists in y application.
3. 2Personas
User Journeys
With the insight gained from the research phase, I created three user personas which were an
excellent example on future users of my tattoo application. I named the three personas: Thomas,
Camilla and Annie.
It was important for me to
cover as many aspects
as possible for my project
and therefore I created
two personas to reflect
the users of my tattoo
app, and also a user
persona with an artist
perspective. These
personas all have a clear
definition of my target
Based on the user personas I sketched out some user journey maps, making sure to
accommodate their needs and wants best possible.

4. User Flows
Information Architecture
With the user personas journey mapping in place I created user flows, based on the important user stories
from the journey maps you see above. I made sure, that every interaction, the user must take to complete a
task or achieve a goal were included in the user flows.
The user flows have an entry
point and an end point, when
the task is completed. The
user flow follows a userās
progress to complete the
task or goal throughout the
diagram.
The Information architecture of my app was created using a sitemap to serve as a visual piracy. With the first
version of the sitemap (Site Map V1), I conducted a closed card sorting exercise with 6 participants, which
offered me valuable insights to revise the IA and make interactions to my site map (Site Map V2).
Further more the site map determinate where the different content from my user flows should go, I created a
sitemap, this would also help me to figure out how the navigation structure should be.

5. Low Fidelity Wireframes
With the information gathered from the ideation phase of my UX process, I began sketching out some low
fidelity wireframes, putting the new knowledge and my ideas down on paper.
This part required lots of thought, and laid the foundation for my appās navigation and architecture.
I worked on the 3 user flows I created under the ideation phase, here I will show 2 of my user flows:
1: Browse images, and find artist profile
2: Find tattoo image and contact Tattoo Artist.
Keeping the basic design and the 3 user-flows in mind, I the process to create greyscale mid-
fidelity prototypes using first Balsamiq. But that wasnāt satisfied, so later I decided to use Adobe
Xd for my mid-fidelity prototypes.
At this time in the design process, I wasnāt really happy with my mid-fidelity prototype and
decided to continue working on the layout, to create a more simple and minimalistic feeling. Some
of the alterations can bee seen under usability test finds below, and also in Design Iterations.

Usability Test Findings
For a detailed look at the test script, including all the tasks the participants were asked to conduct:
Sign up & onboarding, Navigate the main menu, Browsing tattoo styles, Save and share and
thoughts with a tattoo artist, Find a tattoo artists profile and portfolio.
The usability testing were preformed using moderated Remote method one usability test was
preformed Moderated in-person.
The goal of this usability test is to determinate whether or not some core features in the ArtPro Ink
app are easy and straight forward to use for first time users, just as well as figuring out if the
ArtPro Ink app have what it takes to be competitive on the tattoo app market. Will users keep
coming back to the app for tattoo inspiration and share their tattoo inspiration with their local tattoo
The usability testing were preformed using moderated Remote method and one usability test was
preformed Moderated in-person. The moderated Remote moderate usability testing were held
through the video-chatting software Skype on desktop with 5 participants, where all sessions were
screen recorded for future playback analysis.
The test included a short briefing, task performance with Art Pro INK through an Adobe Xd
prototype, and ended with a debriefing.
Using the test recordings and notes, I then proceeded to conduct anther round of infinity
mapping to isolate information and determinate its relation to four main categories:
Observations, Positive Quotes, Negative Quotes, and Errors.
Based on the affinity map, I were able to create a rainbow spreadsheet, to organize the
information and create a visual pattern of the participants thoughts from the usability testing
sessions.
Six usability tests were carried out for the early stage of the ArtPro Ink prototype. Most participants
were able to complete each task without any major issues. Although there werenāt made many
errors with completing the tasks, the usability testing sessions revealed some places where the
usability could be improved.
Furthermore, most participants had gained a good insight during the testing sessions and gave me
feedback about what could improve the usability of the app navigation, and core functions.
After the usability test the following 5 issues have been altered for a better user flow in the app.
The severity issues are rating from low to high severity for the usability my application.
Issue #1: Navigation Tab Bar
Severity: High
Issue #2: Main Manu setup
Severity: High
Issue #3: Sub menu Tattoo INK
Severity: High
Issue #4: Sign Up & Onboarding
Severity: Low
Issue #5: Tattoo Gallery Setup & Functionality
Severity: medium
Findings:
50% of the participants hesitated to sign up to the Art Pro Ink app, without
any information of the app content. They felt it could be unreliable and
therefore they didnāt want to give out any kind of personal information prior
to seeing the app features. This was a low severity issue to the usability, but
will increase the number of new users of the ArtPro Ink app.
Suggested Changes:
Moving the onboarding screens prior to the sign up to create a larger trust /
liability with new users, will maybe be beneficial for the application and can
get more users to sign up.
Evidence:
Onboarding moved prior to sign up and create account.
Findings:
Most participants had issues with navigating the menu setup without help.
Some participants overlooked content in the main menu.
Suggested Changes:
Incorporate a āLanding Pageā to give users an overview of the features with
buttons as can be clicked on, as well as a change each of the features
āfront pageā.
Evidence:

Evaluate how users respond / react to the āSignupā and āOnboardingā of the app.
Evaluate how well users are able to understand and navigate the āMain-menuā of
the ArtPro Ink app.
See whether or not if the āTattoo Stylesā and āGalleryā are allowing the user easily to
browse and explore tattoo style.
Determinate if the current steps to share saved tattoo inspiration and as well, as
userās thoughts are a viable solution or if the process needs to be simplified.
Determinate if the artist / studio profile is viable to the user.
5 Test Objectives
Findings:
The submenu: āTattoo INKā
didnāt made sense for most
participants, and was an extra
click to explore tattoo styles,
and therefore I found it
important to move the sub
menu in tattoo ink to another
location in the app. This was a
high severity issue to the
usability.
Evidence:
The sub menu will be
removed, and āTrending

Tattoosā moved into filter
settings under Tattoo
Styles.
Findings:
While exploring tattoo styles,
participants wanted to see more tattoos
at once.
An overload of information was stopping
them in their flow. Also saving tattoos
they wanted to save as inspiration for
their next tattoo was too complicated.
Suggested Changes:
Change setup, create overlay pop-ups
to inform the users.
Evidence:
By allowing the users to browse several
tattoo pictures on the screen at the
same time, with less information will
benefit the user flow. When the user
clicks on an image the information

Findings:
During the usability test I discovered that more of the participants tried to
click on the navigation bar but the buttons were too small for participants
to find in first attempt.
Suggested Changes:
Create a larger clickable area in navigation bar. Change icons for Tattoo

I used the A/B testing to
make my final decision
regarding the CTA color,
using one of the onboarding
screens.
After that I launched another
A/B test to make the final
decision about the
background color of the app.
In order to proceed with my design decisions, I conducted a series of A/B testing to determinate which
designs were preferred, the A/B test were conducted with respectively 20 and 16 participants.
The test results offered useful insight in choosing, main colors, patterns and over all design.
In addition to the A/B Testing, I learned about best practices in design to apply to my iterations.
For example, implementing iOS human interface guidelines, such as removing the logo from the top
and replace it with directive copy. In addition, I applied rues of hierarchy and laws of proximity and
similarity to the design, in the figure below is an example of Gestalt principles.
After that I shared my prototype with fellow students to do a peer review, the feedback
and insights it gave me, I used to make improvements in the app visually and navigation
wise.
In the example below I added a tab bar, to improve the navigation of my application.
With the feedback and new insights I had gained from the design decision process, I
polished off my application and updated the style guide.
Balance
In order to give more balanced
feeling of the layout, the font weight
have been alternated from thin to a
medium font. Page name and
location have been given the CTA
color of the app so the user know
their whereabouts in the app.
Law of similarity
Icons and text in the menu bar is
matching style and with the same
size and font.
Law of Common Fate
Animated app navigation between
the main features in the ArtPro INK
app. Make it possible to swipe from
Message page
Some of the feedback I received
were regarding readability, in the
message areas of the prototype.
āItās important that the background
isnāt disturbing the users when they
have to read important information.
I made changes to background
image to the same graphics as in the
onboarding, providing the users with
a calm background for their
messages.
Landing page
I received feedback about the
missing tab bar, which will include
the same as on the screen.
I reduced the font size to match the
rest of the screens, and added the
navigation bar, however itās not
necessary but it complete the view of
the landing page.

Next Steps
This project was a great opportunity for me to fully comprehend and understand the user experience design
process. Each step was crucial and relevant to create a responsive application from scratch to the final
prototype. This project allowed me to connect with the user through usability testing and using that
information and new knowledge to create an easy to use application with a user-friendly interface.
Throughout this project I gained a wealth of knowledge and have learned to understand the importance of
thorough research, user empathy and impractical iterations.
If I were to continue to work on my application I would implement the features of book an appointment with a
tattoo artist, and work on the augmented reality part of the app.
Throughout this project I gained a wealth of knowledge and have learned to understand the importance of
