The update on Life: What’s happened and what’s going on
now
Nicole Sittman has recently returned to southern California
after having spent the last two years completing her Masters
Degree in International Education Development at the
University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA where she then
worked and explored South America.
At the conclusion of her time in Philadelphia she worked with
UNESCO's for Latin America & the Caribbean's Knowledge
Management Services Department, in Santiago Chile; utilizing
both her MS in International education development and her
background and BA in Intercultural communications.
With UNESCO she coordinated various events, (ie. Literacy Day
event) campaigns, (ie. Gender Equity campaign), and
conferences (ie. Regional Indigenous Rights conference). She
then traveled solo through five countries improving her
Spanish fluency, volunteering with various organizations,
engaging with and learning about the culture and lives of
those around her, and of course exploring as much as
possible.
She even picking up on some Quechua and Portuguese along
the way! Now returned, she is getting involved in local non-
profit organizations, studying Portuguese, and getting
Page 2
involved with other local PENN alumni activities. She recently
got her Realtor license, and while quite the variation from her
assumed career path, she’s acclimated to the industry quite
seamlessly, most likely due to having grown up around it her
whole life. Her biggest concern was that it wouldn’t provide
the fulfillment and value of changing the lives of others.
She’s been pleasantly surprised by all the varying aspects of
the industry and the countless opportunities presented to be
of service.
The most appealing part of real estate is the ability to take a
month or so off to travel, volunteer, or study outside of the
country. She may not be working for an NGO, but she gets to
help people daily, and can make enough money to then
choose which causes to invest in, and which organization to
work with.
