AZUSA, California. The Cougar football team was in high spirits Saturday night as they
conquered the field against Simon Fraser University. It was an easy sweep for APU football,
with a final score of, 64-14. After this win, earned the number 15 spot in the NCAA Division II
conference.
Simon Fraser football has not had the best season thus far. Their current overall record is 0-4 and
their conference record is 0-2. With no wins under their belt, most would assume that this would
be an easy win for Azusa Pacific, but APU knew not to underestimate their opponent.
From the start of the first quarter, the Cougars defense made it clear that they would remain
strong throughout the game, and they did. APU’s offensive coordination produced a total of six
touchdowns. Combined, quarterbacks Chad Jeffries (senior) and Andrew Elffers (junior)
completed 18 of 27 passes for 356 yards.
As the game continued on, Simon Fraser managed to make a 36 yard touchdown, but this one
setback didn’t affect Cougar morale.
“We took ownership when the mistake was made even if they are minor mistakes,” said Chris
Solomon, linebacker for APU.
To help APU to regain their dominance after the SFU touchdown, Weston Carr, a freshman at
APU who played wide receiver for the game, was able to catch three balls for 120 yards, which
led to his first touchdown for his first season with the cougars.
When APU started to get their confidence back, the plays from the cougars were ones that were
able to get the lead they had against Simon Fraser. The confidence in the team is what made
APU football come together in the second half
“Communication with each other is key in order to win and everyone was being vocal and
loud,” said Solomon. “We did not give up after the first touchdown.”
2. Brandon Jackson, a freshman wide receiver for APU, conquered the field with three touchdowns
and a total of 105 yards in the third quarter of the second half, help to give APU freshmen a
name for themselves with a good start to the season.
”It was not too much of a competition, but we went in thinking we are going to give them our
best fight,” said Solomon. “Now we are ranked number 15 in the conference.”
With this in mind, the APU football team will be striving to climb the ranks even more in future
games.
“Even though I had a feeling that the outcome of the game was going to be a win, it was still an
intense game to watch,” said Makenna Herra, a junior at APU. Many of the reactions from the
crowd were the same as Herra's, excitement throughout the stands. “It’s exciting to see the team
that you have been cheering for work so hard on the field,” says, Ariana Leon a devoted fan and
junior at APU.
As the energy of the team reached the stands, the teammates held a celebration of their own,
shooting and giving praise to their follow peers. After this great win and good start to the season,
APU’s football team is ready for more wins. Before that can be done, the Cougars know that
there is more work cut out for them.
“Just because we win one game doesn't mean that we should go thinking that the next game is
going to have a safe out,” said Solomon. “Each game that we go into we know that we have to
work hard in order to achieve the goals we want as a team.”
