Began ‘freelancing’ which really
meant unemployed.
* The term used was ‘sandbagging’.
I was one of the sand bags.

Returned to Adelaide and worked as a
freelance designer.
Spent $21,000* on a Mac IIci, a QMS A4 laser
printer and some other bits and bobs.

Design position at graphic;ideas.
— A small design studio that specialised in packaging
for the agriculture sector.
Became Lord of the Bromide Camera but suffered
greatly from ‘red light fever’.

Became Senior Designer at graphic;ideas responsible
for a team of four people.
Never went near the bromide camera again.

Don’t presume the methods and processes that you learned
at Design School will still be viable throughout your career.
Keep learning and keep teaching yourself new things.

Don’t become complacent on your journey.
Circumstances beyond your control can have a significant
impact on your career and your confidence as a designer.
Learn to read the signs of the world around you to ensure
you can change course if necessary.

Don’t let the naysayers bring you down.
Listen to constructive criticism but learn to filter out
unnecessary bagging and negative feedback.

“Luck” is a consequence of being in a position to capitalise
on opportunities when they are presented.
Work hard to make sure that when Lady Luck taps you on the
shoulder, you have the means to go with it.
