STATION MANAGER CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. LeadershipandManagement
1.1 To be responsible forthe daytoday managementof staff andresourcesfora specifiedfire
station(s).
1.2 To be proactive infacilitatingthe traininganddevelopmentof stationpersonnel,andbe
responsible fortheirdiscipline andwelfare,managinginline withBrigade policies.
1.3 To be proactive inensuringspecifiedcorporate targetsare achievede.g.Sicknessabsence;Home
Fire Safetyvisits;budgetarycompliance.
1.4 To be responsible forresourcesatafire station(s),ensuringpersonnel andappliancesmeet
minimumfire coverrequirements.
1.5 To ensure thatthe station(s) has/haverobustadministrative systemsandcomplywithall
relevantdepartmental policies.
2. Communication
2.1 To positivelycommunicateandsupportmanagerial andAuthoritydecisions.
2.2 To positivelycommunicateandsupportthe implementationof Brigade Policies,proceduresand
managementguidance
2.3 To representthe Brigade andprovide inputtolocal authoritiesonmattersthataffectthe area
coveredbythe fire station.
2.4 To conduct briefingsandpresentationsto staff andmembersof the communitytogroupsof
varyingsize,ona range of stationbasedinitiatives.
2.5 To ensure thatcorporate information/instructionsare disseminatedtoall stationpersonnel
2.6 To co-ordinate responsestocomplimentsandcomplaintsin liaison withthe AreaSupportTeam.
2.7 To ensure line managersare briefedandupdatedonanymajorissuesaffectingthe station(s)
and/orstationpersonnel.
3. Performance Management
3.1 To maintainmanagementinformationandoperational systemstosupportgoodservice delivery
and contribute tosafe systemsof working.
3.2 To be responsible forthe overallleadershipandmanagementof staff ona station,inline with
Brigade policies,practicesandmanagementguidance.
3.3 To leadand manage the performance anddevelopmentof staff withintheirline management
chainwiththe aim of providingaflexible andefficientteamthatdeliversontime andagainstthe
agreedobjectives.
3.4 To assessand developstaff againstsetcriteriaina range of processesincluding:PRDS;CPD;
Recruitmentetc;inaccordance withBrigade policiesandstandardisationprocedures.
3.5 To liaise witharange of Brigade Departmentstoensure personnel are trainedanddevelopedin
accordance withBrigade policies.
3.6 To undertake investigation,presideoverandpresentatBrigade employmentproceduresfor
uniformedandnon-uniformedstaff,inaccordance withBrigade Disciplinaryprocedures.To
undertake the managerial role andresponsibilitiesrequiredwithinthe Brigade’sAttendance
Managementpolicy,andtoensure juniormanagerscarryout theirresponsibilities.
3.7 Take responsibilityforensuringowncontinuingprofessionaldevelopment,identifyingareas
where newskillsand/orknowledgewouldbe beneficialinrelationtothe dutiesof the postand
undertakingappropriate developmental activitiesinconsultationwithline manager,subjectto
budgetaryconstraints.
3.8 To ensure thatstaff in the line managementchainare conversantinthe Brigade policiesand
proceduresthataffecttheirpost.
3.9 Keepinformed of Brigade policiesinrelationtothe role andthe level of responsibility.Carryout
all activitiesinaccordance withthese policies,askingfortrainingandguidance if necessary.
4. Operational Duties
4.1 To lead,monitorandsupportindividualsin the resolutionof operational incidentsinaccordance
withBrigade policies,proceduresandmanagementguidance.
4.2 To be notifiedof operational incidentsandrespondasnecessaryeitherasRemote Monitoring
Officer,MonitoringOfficer,IncidentCommanderora varietyof functional rolestoensure the
effectiveandsafe resolutionof operational incidents.
4.3 To confirmthat relevantBrigade proceduresare implementedtoensure asafe systemof workis
employedatall timesandanappropriate Dynamic RiskAssessmentiscarriedout.
4.4 To ensure thatincidentsare adequatelyresourcedatall timestakingintoconsiderationthe
welfare of crewsandthe currentor expecteddemandonBrigade resources.
4.5 To identifyandimplementanappropriate operational plantosuccessfullyresolve anincident
takingintoconsiderationALLavailableriskinformation.
4.6 To take on operational attributes(tags) relevanttothe role andsupportor attendincidentsas
directedbyControl andmobilising.
4.7 To monitorandreviewthe performance of teamsandindividualsandprovide feedbackon
performance throughBrigade systems.
5. External Engagement
5.1 To representthe Brigade inall CommunityFire Safetymattersrelevanttothe station.
5.2 To representthe Brigade atmeetings,asdeterminedbythe Line Manager.
5.3 To representthe Brigade atmeetingswithexternal stakeholdersandgovernmentorganisations.
5.4 To take a proactive approachto representingthe Brigade inapositive light,indue accordance
withBrigade procedures,protocols,valuesandaims.
5.5 To undertake stationvisitswithelectedMembersandlocal Councillorsandrespondtoqueries
on a range of Brigade relatedtopics.
5.6 To be proactive inraisingthe profile of the fire stationwithinthe local communitythrough
Communityevents,local initiativesandopendays.
5.7 To supportthe workof Brigade initiatives/interventionsinthe local community.
5.8 To participate,asrequired,onworkinggroups,projectteamsandcommittees.
6. Administration
6.1 To assistinthe preparationof fundingbidstoobtainfinancialresourcestosupportcommunity
projects.
6.2 To monitorstationbasedbudgetsandtoadvise seniormanagementof any
discrepancies/shortfalls.
6.3 To monitorandreviewpersonnel andtrainingrecordstosupportinformationmanagement.6.4
To compile andprovide statisticalinformationonarange of workstreamsto informdecision
making.
6.5 To verifyandsignoff forms(whetherhardcopyor electronic),e.g.expense claims,mileage
claims.
6.6 Ensure the securityof confidentialandsensitiveinformation/data,inaccordance withthe Data
ProtectionandFreedomof InformationActs
6.7 To ensure thatenvironmental impactsare consideredwhencarryingoutthe dutiesof the post.
6.8 To leadand participate,asrequired,onworkinggroups,projectteamsandcommittees.
6.9 To set andmanage the deliveryof equalityobjectivesata local level thatcontribute towards
corporate goals,and ensure thatthe standardsof behaviourassetoutin equalitiesandpersonnel
policiesare consistentlyapplied.Tobe responsibleforapplyingaconsistentandappropriate
approach to managingindividual anddiverse needsinthe workplace,inline withequalitiesand
personnel policies.
6.10 Ensure compliance withthe guidance relatingtothe use of displayscreenequipment.
6.11 Use the informationtechnologyandcommunicationsystemsof the Brigade inaccordance with
the ICT Acceptable Use Policy.
6.12 Investigateaccidentsandnear missevents,preparereportsandactionplansincluding
necessarycorrective actions.
6.13 To be responsibleforthe applicationandenforcementof the brigadesHealth&SafetyPolices
and to undertake proactive actiontoreduce accidentsanddangerousoccurrencesinthe workplace
or on the incidentground.
6.14 Fullyunderstandandundertake the dutiesof the postinaccordance withthe Brigade's
SafeguardingChildrenandSafeguardingAdultsatRiskPolicies
