Things to Do
a horrible (if spectacular) death,
there is something quite special
about teetering in tree pose as the
sun rises above Canary Wharf in the
distance.
Downward-facing asanas are
a little less relaxing. Compared
to other panoramic spots,Tower
Bridge is not particularly high,
but itís unnerving to be able to
see details like peopleís scarves
blowing in the wind as
wafts of cold air find
their way through joints
in the glass walkway.
However,the fear
factor does add to
the invigorating effect
of the 50-minute
vinyasa-flow session,
and afterwards you
can stick around for a
short time to enjoy the
stunning views without the usual
crowds ñ a definite bonus.
There are a surprising number of
yoga nuts with a head for heights
and the initial run of classes sold
out fast, but four dates have been
added if you fancy a high-altitude
workout. Though maybe hold off on
that breakfast muffin until after the
class. Natasha Polyviou
THE BOTTOM LINE You need a
strong stomach to exercise your
core at this height.

Like the rest of the class who have
signed up for a dizzying morning
yoga session on Tower Bridgeís new
transparent floor,Iím trepidatious
about setting foot on the glass.
Weíre 42 metres above rush-hour
traffic and the choppy
Thames,whose grey
murk has never looked
moreuninviting.Iwonder
what would hurt more
ñ plummeting on to the
road or into the freezing
river? Hitting the water
from that height would
be like smashing into
concrete,so Iíd be toast
either way.
An unfortunate drama took place
soon after the floor was unveiled in
November,when one of the glass
panels was shattered by a dropped
beer bottle. But the staff stress
that only the most superficial of
five layers of glass ñ the ësacrificial
layerí ñ was cracked in the incident,
and that thereís no danger of
anyone falling through,however
many pastries theyíve consumed
beforehand. And once I manage
to banish my fears of dragging
myself out of bed early only to die
