A Vitrectomy is a form of eye surgery for the treatment of different retina
and vitreous problems. The surgeon removes the vitreous during surgery
and replaces it with another solution. The vitreous is a gel-like substance,
which fills the eye's middle portion. The retina in the back of the eye is a
layer of cells. These cells use light to send the brain visual information. The
vitreous will normally be clear, as light will pass into the eye and enter the
retina.
Some issues can cause blood and debris to block the light. Vitreous scar
tissue may even displace or tear the retina. This will all impair vision.
Surgeons perform Vitrectomy for a detached retina. Removing the vitreous
gives better access to the retina and reduces the tension on the retina.
The surgeon uses tiny tools during Vitrectomy to cut and suction the
vitreous. The eye doctor will also perform any other repairs that are
required, such as repairing a hole in the retina. He or she can place air or
other gas in the eye to help the retina stay in its proper place.
3. Reasons for the procedure:
If you have one of the following eye issues you may require a vitrectomy:
Retinal detachment
Infection inside the eye
Diabetic retinopathy

5. Vitrectomy Procedure:
A mild anesthesia would be given to the patent to numb the eye unless you prefer general anesthesia and you can
remain unconscious during the procedure. During the procedure, the surgeon will:
Make sure the eyelid is fully opened.
Cuts the eye tissue into the first layer
Cuts into the eye's white tissue, termed as the sclera.
Insert the cutters, the scissors, and the forceps into one of the cuts.
Insert the fiber-optic light through one of the other cuts to see the inside of the eye.
Removes the necessary vitreous and other tissues from one of the cuttings.
Replaces the vitreous with another substance, such as gas, air or saline. Eventually, this substance will be
replaced by a fluid that the eye normally creates.
Perform some such surgery to repair the retina to remove damaged tissue from the eye, such as using a laser to
fix some issues in the retina.
Removes any tools and lights, and stitches the eye openings. The doctor don't have to use stitches in certain
cases.
