3. WHAT IS RHINOPLASTY?
It is a nose reshaping surgery which is done to enhances the appearance of nose, improve respiration or both.
The upper part of the structure of the nose is bone, and the lower part is cartilage. The surgery can change bone,
cartilage, skin or all three.
It may be done to repair abnormalities from an injury, correct a birth defect or improve some breathing problems.
4. EVALUATIONS FOR RHINOPLASTY
Medical history – If the patient has any bleeding
disorder he may not be a candidate for rhinoplasty.
Physical examination – This is done to check the
thickness of the skin and cartilage.
Blood test – Complete blood test is done to check
the hemoglobin levels before surgery.
Photographs - The photos permit a specific
discussion about the goals of surgery.
5. PROCEDURE FOR RHINOPLASTY
Rhinoplasty involves local anesthesia with sedation or general
anesthesia, depending on the complexity of your surgery.
It may be done inside your nose or through a small external
cut at the base of your nose, between your nostrils. The
surgeon will adjust the bone and cartilage underneath your
skin.
For minor changes, the surgeon may use cartilage taken from
deeper inside your nose or from your ear.
For major changes, the surgeon may use cartilage from your
rib, implants or bone from other parts of your body.
After these changes are made, the surgeon places the nose's
skin and tissue back and stitches the incisions in your nose.
6. POST RHINOPLASTY SURGERY
Post surgery, you will be in a recovery room, where the
staff monitors your return to wakefulness. You might leave
later that day or if you have other health issues, you might
have to stay overnight.
After the surgery you need to rest in bed with your head
raised higher than your chest, to reduce bleeding and
swelling.
The nose may be congested because of swelling or from
the splints placed inside your nose during surgery.
Some temporary swelling or black-and-blue discoloration
of the eyelids may occur for 2-3 weeks after nasal surgery.
7. RISKS
Bleeding
Infection
Adverse reaction to anesthesia
Difficulty breathing
Permanent numbness in and around the nose
Pain, discoloration
Scarring
