MY
HEALTH RECORD
My Health Record for young people
• Effective 4 February 2019 the Australian
Parliament made important changes to My Health
Record laws. These laws mean stronger privacy
protections for young people aged 14-17 years.
• Parents are automatically removed as Authorised
representatives from the young person’s My
Health Record from the age of 14
• The young person can manage their own My
Health Record.
• The young person can choose to nominate a
parent, guardian or other person as a Nominated
Representative and grant appropriate level of
access if they wish.
I think we all know that young people,
me included, don’t necessarily like
being told what to do.
So having a capacity to actually take
ownership and control of our own
health and own record gives us an
ability to manage ourselves in a way
that wouldn’t otherwise be possible.

Improving health outcomes
The Agency is refocusing consumer and community engagement programs to
better target the needs of the Australian population across rural, regional and
remote Australia.
Connecting the health issues of most importance to consumers with providers
and innovators to foster consumer-driven design solutions for better health
care management. For example:
• What are the mobile preventative health apps and approaches currently in use or
‘blue sky thinking’ that could support youth mental health
• How can technology be used to build trust, relationships and connections
between consumers, carers, families, healthcare workers and specialists in the
aged care sector? Can it help mitigate Elder Abuse?
• How can digital health technologies be aligned to the CTG goals and used to
improve outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People?

Communities of Excellence - Concept
• What: regional and/or rural communities that have all
healthcare providers connected to the My Health Record
system.
• Why: to demonstrate the benefits of using the My Health
Record system and digital health through meaningful,
connected use.
• Where: 3 communities have been chosen for the pilot –
Berrigan (NSW), Emerald (QLD) and Hedland (WA). These
communities are rural or remote communities and have
strong local clinical leadership and support.
Having My Health Record means
that my staff can manage our
clients better.
For example, they will get to
know what’s going on with our
people and help them to identify
people who need a review of
medication

Digital Health Workforce and Education Roadmap
• Leading the development of a national digital health
workforce and education roadmap linked directly to
Australia's national digital health strategy.
• The priority is to ensure a health workforce that is
confident using digital health technologies to deliver
health and care.
• Engagement across the health sector to understand
what is needed to realise this outcome.
• Engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
Health Practitioners, Affiliates and Community
Controlled Health Organisations is critical to inform the
roadmap.
There’s a lot of cynicism out there; that online
records are just an excuse for governments to
collect information about us. Part of my job is
assuring people that only authorised doctors
can access a person’s My Health Record, with
strict safety checks along the way to ensure
their privacy.
Once access is granted, the information is only
used for the purposes of improving a patient’s
health and wellbeing.
