• Analyze incidence rates of obesity in
Union County, New Jersey.
• Provide easy and affordable access to
healthy foods and exercise.
• Provide educational support to reduce
the rate of obesity, preventable diseases
and chronic illnesses.
• Since year 2000 both African Americans
and Hispanic/Latino populations have
lead obesity related deaths in Union
County.
• In 2013, the 5 leading causes of death
amongst these populations were heart
disease, cancer, stroke, chronic
respiratory disease and diabetes, all
underlying factors of obesity.
• Data from a recent 2012 community
assessment confirmed that the incidence
of diabetes and obesity, if not addressed
will continue to increase within both
populations.
• Host monthly programs that promote
healthy eating and physical activity.
• Hold monthly Mobile Food Market where
fresh fruits , vegetables and healthy
snacks are distributed to the residents
from the Community Food Bank of NJ.
• Surveys are conducted during the Mobile
Food Market where participants are asked
about current needs and lifestyles.
• Survey questions focus on eating habits,
accessibility to healthy foods, and physical
activity.
• Data will be collected through a
survey administered at the
second Mobile Food Market on
April 28th, 2016.
• New Surveys will be administered
monthly at the Mobile Food Market
Events.
• Data collected will be kept on a
spreadsheet that will consist of date
of event, number of surveys
completed and results of survey.
• Success will be measured based on
monthly improvements and changes
made by participants towards
maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
I will like to thank my program preceptor,
Alane McCahey, Senior Director of The
Gateway Family YMCA and my instructor
Anita Franzione for guiding and assisting
me with this project.
