2. Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a condition in
which a blood clot (thrombus) forms in a vein and
blocks the flow of blood. It can be life-threatening
and is the third leading cause of cardiovascular death
in the United States.
The two main types of VTE are deep vein thrombosis
(DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Deep vein
thrombosis occurs when a clot forms in a deep vein,
usually in the legs, and can cause pain, swelling, and
redness. Pulmonary embolism occurs when a clot
travels to the lungs, blocking the flow of blood, and
can cause difficulty breathing, chest pain, and
sudden collapse.

3. The risk factors for VTE include age, family history of VTE, prolonged bed rest, surgery, pregnancy, and certain
medical conditions. Other risk factors include smoking, obesity, cancer, and the use of certain medications.
Treatment for VTE depends on the type and severity of the clot. In most cases, anticoagulants (blood thinners) are
used to prevent further clotting and to reduce the risk of recurrence. In some cases, a filter may be placed in the vein
to prevent the clot from traveling to the lungs. Surgery may be necessary to remove the clot or to repair a damaged
vein.
It is important to seek medical attention if you suspect that you have VTE or have any of the risk factors. Early
diagnosis and treatment can reduce the risk of serious complications and death.
