TRUMPTRIUMPHS‘I PROMISE YOU I WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN’
REPUBLICAN WINS FLORIDA, DUVAL
By Julie Pace & Robert Furlow
Associated Press
D
onald Trump claimed his place Wednesday
as America’s 45th president, an astonishing
victory for the celebrity businessman and
political novice who capitalized on vot-
ers’ economic anxieties, took advantage
of racial tensions and overcame a string
of sexual assault allegations on his way to the White
House.
His triumph over Hillary Clinton, not declared un-
til well after midnight, will end eight years of Demo-
cratic dominance of the White House and threatens
to undo major achievements of President Barack
Obama. Trump has pledged to act quickly to repeal
Obama’s landmark health care law, revoke America’s
nuclear agreement with Iran and rewrite important
trade deals with other countries, particularly Mexico
and Canada.
As he claimed victory, Trump urged Americans to
“come together as one united people” after a deeply
divisive campaign.
He said he had spoken by phone with Clinton and
they had exchanged congratulations on a hard-fought
race. Trump, who spent much of the campaign urging
his supporters on as they chanted “lock her up,” said
the nation owed her “a major debt of gratitude” for
her years of public service.
Trump’s Florida win,
without Duval blowout,
sinksconventionalwisdom
By Nate Monroe & Andrew Pantazi
The Times-Union
Fueled by a populist broadside from suburban and
rural voters, Republican nominee Donald Trump
edged out Democrat Hillary Clinton in Florida, de-
spite her strong showings in more urban areas like
Jacksonville that have historically swayed statewide
elections. His victory upends traditional assumptions
about how to win elections in the Sunshine State.
In Jacksonville — Florida’s most populous city
and a right-leaning battleground — Clinton outper-
formed every Democratic presidential candidate
since former President Jimmy Carter in 1976. She lost
Duval County by about 6,000, according to unofficial
and incomplete vote tallies.
It didn’t matter.
“It’s probably the biggest upset since Truman in
1948. Just no one expected it,” said Matthew Corri-
gan, a University of North Florida political science
